We Yi, we can possibly has a deep threat at all positions at the same time in a game. Will a line-up like that work for us? Who knows. But sounds fun...
Yi averaged 7.9 points and 4.9 rebounds in his five seasons in the NBA.
If Yi can duplicate those numbers I'm sure everyone would be ecstatic!
Honestly he has to be vastly improved since then. His physique has matured and his skills are more refined
I don't think its about numbers because we don't know how many minutes hes going to get yet. I'm looking at impact. Will he be a legit confident threat from 3 pt line which spaces the floor creating good looks for other players and open lanes. And on defense can he switch and cover pick and roll effectively. Those two things will not show up as basic counting numbers but can greatly effect how this team wants to play.

Yep.
The little things that don't show up on stat sheets, If he can setscreens and also boost the assists from the PGs by knocking pick & pop 3's he's gonna be valuable to this team.
They're actually the same person. Yao wanted to go into the HOF this year but he still wanted to play, so he changed his name after the induction ceremony.
ok ok i need to know what you guys are thinking. dude was an nba dropout for 5 seasons and now hes supposedly improved while playing in china (in CHINA) and hes gonna make a positive contribution to one of the worst teams in the league??? how is anyone putting a positive spin on this??? (And dont tell me olympics because hamed haddadi looked good in the olympics)

I don't believe they are the same person. But I am sure they are both Asian.
Can the Chinese Star big man bounce back into the NBA? Or will he shrink again?
Catching up with some highlight videos of when Yi Jianlian was playing with the Milwaukee Bucks, New Jersey Nets and Washington Wizards, you can easily tell Yi was pretty intimidated playing with guys much stronger than he was. His confidence was pretty shook and even when he started playing with the Mavericks, it got no better. Yi has been away from the NBA for 5 years after playing 6 years being drafted #6 overall in the 2007 NBA Draft by the Bucks. Most thought Yi was going to be the 2nd best Chinese player behind Yao Ming. It didn't result well.

He played well in the pre-Olympic exhibition games too

I am thinking Yi is a role player with a certain skillset that will be put on the court when Walton is looking for a specific advantage in specific match ups. Probably in the 15mpg range most of the season.
I like the signing. Just not expecting him to be dominant. Just a solid contributor from the bench. Lakers roster is much more balanced and deep then last year IMO. Yi is a part of that improvement.

You need to look at it from a risk/reward position rather than purely from a reward/reward/reward position.
Do you play fantasy football? This is like drafting a sleeper for your bench. If he pans out, you're golden and now have a rotation player at the expense of a late draft pick. If he doesn't, then you can go to someone else.
He represents, for this team, all upside with no little to no downside. There is no pressure on the Lakers for him to be successful, unlike with a guy like DLO, Clarkson, Randle, Ingram, etc.

I agree ringfinger - this is a very low-risk contract. If Yi can provide a skillset the other centers can't provide, like mobility on defense or stretching the floor, and play a role effectively that other centers can't, then regardless of how many minutes he gets this is an intelligent move by the Lakers IMO.
As for forecasting how Yi does this year, barring any trades I picture Mozgov starting, and Yi/Black/Zubac all coming in as backup options depending on game situation and matchup. It's possible Yi could only see 8 minutes per game, but if he provides what Luke is looking for when he's on the floor he'll still get those minutes consistently and earn his max in incentives. Even in that situation this is still a smart contract.
I'm not calling myself a believer yet or anything, but Bres has been saying this week on Sportsnet that coaches have been impressed with how Yi is looking in workouts at the facility
