China is importing a lot of food from Thailand and other regional producers.
The traditional markets you describe still flourishes in Thailand in common with more western type markets specially when you are talking meat and poultry. Fruit and vegetables are on the other hand less likely to hit cold storage like in the west. But a lot of fields and orchards are bought up ahead of time and being exported whole to China. |
It all makes sense now, had this perception that China didn't need to import as much as do, but the amount of fruits/vegetables they've been importing from Thailand (and also Chile) has been staggering. No wonder the quality isn't quite the same, the so-called food miles effect can't be understated. |
