Big reason why I wouldn't be shocked to see 40 wins this year, seems like everyone is growing.

Luke absolutely lit up talking about Zubac's sky hooks. I reeeaaaaally hope he gets burn in the regular season, the Yi signing (as genius as it was) dampens my hopes of Abdul-Zubbar playing much this year. He's just so much fun to watch, during the game and post game interviews

I also like very much how he emphasizes how they want to actually develop the young core. I'd be surprised if we traded any of them anytime soon.

In that same vein, Luke has a fairly different vision from LG on who starts:

Quote:
Luke Walton’s LAL starting 5 is far from set: "Whoever outplays the next guy in line, that’s who gets to start."

Good luck to Deng and Mozgov cause now we know they ain't guaranteed starting spots.

Both have been a pleasant surprise and have bright futures.

That being said, both have a long way to go. Enjoy the ride.

Yeah I like this approach much better - get guys in that starting line-up who will play like they give a (bleep) vs. social engineering and just sucking up to vets.

No favoritism based on age or expectations. Play the guys who give you the best chance to win. I like it.

Luke with that bbqiq. Best in San Diego

We might get to see Russell-Clarkson-Ingram-Randle-Zubac lineup sooner than we think then.

I absolutely loved how he answered the question and said how he has nobody penciled in yet. I'm sure these young guys are aware of that too

I have a hard time seeing 2 players making 136M In salary to play off the bench unless the young players are clicking and they have great chemistry and the Lakers are winning.

Well even if he does plan to start them, I think its smart of Luke to at least have to young guys try to compete for that spot

You have it backwards. The Lakers gave them $136M because they should be good enough to start. As opposed to them starting because they were given $136M.

If they lose their starting gigs, either the young guys really overperformed to usurp that starting spot, or one of those two really underperformed relative to expectations. In either scenario, salary isn't a justification to start these guys to the detriment of the team.

It's not like they have a choice in the matter. No point of handicapping your team to start veterans who are locked up for 4 years and are performing worst than a rookie.

I don't think player salary will ever factor into Luke's coaching decisions. I brought this point up in another thread, but the Lakers paid more money for two reasons:

1) Vets are important to have on an young team. More than anything, Deng and Mozgov will be good babysitters for Zubac and Ingram. Deng in particular will be great for showing Ingram the ropes.

2) Mozgov received interest from the Spurs and Warriors, but it's likely he would have received far less. Deng would have gotten a good 1-2 year contract from another squad. Lakers paid a premium because of their status as a 17 win team, so they had to give those guys extra reasons to come here (hence the extra years and no team options on their contracts).

At the end of the day, money talks. Both those guys will have no problem playing less as long as they get paid. If you get 14-16 million to ride the pine in a sunny state, that's a pretty decent trade-off.

Competition brings out the best in players. If those guys start, it will be because they've earned it.

CLW has already said that he will play the best players that give us a chance to compete regardless of contracts, age and seniority.

That all said, I don't expect Zubac or Ingram to beat out Deng and Mozgov at the start of the season.

If they did then that would mean they're both going to be special a lot sooner.

At least this season I don't see Ingram beating Deng for the SF spot (maybe end of the year or if Luke decides to start Ingram/Deng).

I think it's highly unlikely zub displaces Moz. It's more about winning the 3rd center spot right now over black/Yi.
