That would explain the Summer League haircut.

He has a chance to be a Harden lite, Harden if am not mistaken also has that ability.
Both have quick releases as well. |
He'll be MUCH better than Harden. Not even close. _________________ Darvin Scam: https://media.tenor.com/images/3c15249955860a4b16b59e8ae035fb75/tenor.gif |

Russell will be an all-star offensively more than likely. His ability to be great will depend on his ability to be a plus defender. He has the tools to do that too. _________________ Austin Reaves keeps his game tight, like Kobe Bryant on game night. |

Ehh, I don't know. Defense at the 1 is so overrated IMO. Probably the least important position defensively. Individual defense is way more impactful inside and on the wing.
I think playing team defense is more important at the 1 than individual lockdown type defense. |

True, you look at Curry as the prototype weak on-ball but strong overall team to see the strengths and cons of the argument. The Warriors were consistently elite defensively (granted some slippage this past year) even with Curry playing a huge amount of minutes. In fact, per plus/ minus and team lineup data, he was a plus defender last year and just about neutral this year.
OTOH the Cavs specifically attacked Curry with LeBron and Irving. Managed to get him in foul trouble (though the officiating was questionable on Curry all series long IMO) in some games and also really jump started their offense. Kyrie had a field day and LeBron had some of his best halfcourt shot creation (which otherwise was pretty poor all series) exploiting this matchup in the latter half of the series.
If it's exploitable, it just takes one team with the ability to exploit it to knock you out of the playoffs. |

Russell defensively has solid upside.
Russell lead all rookies in steals, so that's one aspect of it, because of his ability to play the lanes so well, he just needs to continue to get the basics down and add strength. HE worked on his defense during the season last year which is why he improved as the season went on. However he addressed on man defense like a pickup game in Summer League while still playing the passing lanes well. So I hope we'll see more of how he finished the season trying to lock in defensively as opposed to the summer league mentality

Right, but again, with the right team defensive philosophies in place, you wouldn't end up with your PG on an island trying to defend Irving and Lebron all by his lonesome.
There is no PG on the planet that can do that. |

Really? I'm not sure there's much the Warriors could have done, aside from throwing a hard double when Curry was switched onto Kyrie or LeBron (which seems like a bad idea). The Cavs' entire game plan was to isolate on Curry, so I'm not sure there's another option beyond the hard double or trying to let Curry guard him. |

Ok. So how come Curry didn't go off on Irving then? Because of Irving's elite individual defense?
Or because the Cavs played a masterful TEAM defensive game? |

Curry is a generational offensive player but he's far more deadly off the PnR (where it turns into a team contest) than out of isolation, especially in the Finals where he is less wont to shoot crazier shots. One consequent downside is the Warriors have a tough time directly punishing a poor defensive guard.
If the Warriors had LeBron, you could bet they would try to abuse Irving with him. But they didn't have anyone like that. Incidentally that's probably the most underrated part of signing KD.
I agreed with your overall point, by the way. Team defense is vastly more important, and at most it's situational if poor on-ball defense can be exploited or not. All I was getting at was that it can be exploitable against a particular team. |

Russell doesn't need to shut down the opposing Point to be a good defender. He has to defend well against guys that can defend him. That way he can win his position without requiring excessive usage. _________________ Austin Reaves keeps his game tight, like Kobe Bryant on game night. |

Yeah, I can see that. He also has that "I don't give a F" mentality that is kind of needed to achieve something like that too. |
He is only in his second year. Let's wait a few more years until we say he is capable to being like Kobe. |

Yup. This is why Randles development is so important to our team IMO. He and Clarkson can score in ISO when everything else breaks down. It brings another level to our team. Russell and Ingram as well but not as good as Randle and Clarkson IMO.
If Luke and their training staff can get Randle to buy into the team concept and ball movement he's going to be a nightmare. When he can pick and choose when to ISO and make teams pay within the flow of what we're trying to do offensively. |
