What are your feelings on retiring Pau's jersey?
This is a no-brainer! The Spaniard deserves it.

My first reaction is that the Lakers are such a storied franchise with the highest standards that it shouldn't be a "no brainer". Yes he deserves to have his jersey retired as a Laker IMO, but I was expecting more comparisons. Thankfully Wilkes (in) and Coop (out) have been mentioned at least.

Gasol has to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, which may take a few years since he is not the first ballot type, then he will get his jersey retired in the rafters. 19-9 are nice career numbers, but, not standing out above, say, Chris Bosh, who also averages 19-9. Chris Webber averaged 21-10, he still isn't in yet, and no one is crying "snub."

You can't compare Hall of Fame candidates simply by their scoring and rebounding averages. Those are important, but only a piece of the equation.

Webber is a controversial figure. He had good career numbers, but he had a short career, never took an NBA team to the finals, and his college career is remembered for one of the biggest boneheaded plays of all time.

Gasol has a lot going for him -- being the second banana on two ring teams is a big deal, and usually gets you in the Hall. And he has a strong international career.

Yep. If he makes the Hall he'll be up there.

If Yao got into the HOF on a mix of his NBA & international contributions, I feel good about Pau's chances since he had a better career in both.

Question: You say with what Yao accomplished in international and NBA would put him in the HOF, but Pau after the 2010 finals lacked fire and heart unless he was playing for his Spain team.

From my understanding people's who join the HOF have always given 48M of heart and effort, and Pau lacked any effort from 2011-2015, so does he really deserve the honor? I would say he's a Laker and International legend but certainly not HOF especially since he didn't give effort for a lot of the times he was here.

I love what Pau did from 08-10, but he diffinitely made us stress in his last few years as a Laker.

you look at all Lakers jerseys hanging from the rafters and those guys always stepped up in the big moments, Pau was a stat stuffer in Memphis and didn't do much after he won his 2nd ring.

He's a great player who will be remembered for turning the Lakers franchise around, but he's had way to many downs to be a HOFr.

He's a Laker legend and NBA superstar but as far as Hall of famer? That's tough.

Not an easy call, but I'd only say OK if you put Cooper's up there before Pau.

Pau - 2 titles, multiple All-Star games as Laker

Coop - 5 titles, DPOY.

I'm with you on this. Unfortunately, I don't think Coop will ever make it. Too bad he didn't win any championships overseas. Maybe he can get in somehow. In addition to the Lakers championships, he won championships as the head coach of the LA Sparks(WNBA) twice and the Albuquerque Thunderbirds(D-League) once. Maybe if he won a championship as an NBA head coach, he could boast that he's won at all of these levels and slide in there.

Yup, like most of you already agree, he deserves a spot up there. Three finals and two championships. We know he's going to the HOF, so why not get in front of this like we did with Shaq and put him up there? Time heals all wounds, and I thin eventually both sides will want to let bygones be bygones...

Absolutely 100%, no 2peat without him. He was the 2 punch with kobe, not a role player. He will be a hof, and the lakers better show him much love with how he had been disrespected multiple times ( ya ya I know it's a biz).

Regardless of how his Laker career ended, there's no question his jersey should be retired imo.

A huge part of the two championships but after that, when he was clearly distracted, misused (MDA) and belittled by coaches (Mike brown, MDA), traded, then constantly shopped, then finally left for a lesser offer..i would find it odd to see his jersey in the rafters. His jersey belongs there in a sense for what he achieved but it will be different than the other jerseys because of how his Laker career was in decline after 09-10. Half his six year Laker career was in decline, though most of it was because he was placed in a bad spot by the team (literally and figuratively).

Given that, I think the Lakers do it, no question.

I loved Pau, but retired numbers should be for the greats, not just the very good. He is not on the same level as Magic, West, Shaq, and Kobe. I guess I have a little different standards.

I do indeed. If he's deserving of one more than the other, it would be Hall of Fame, rather than Laker jersey number retired, IMO.

Always so easy to tell who pays attention to who's actually inducted into this thing.

Bernard King got in a few years ago, so yeah, there you go.

Iverson never gave 48 min of heart and effort throughout his career and he's in the hall. Sure he gave it during his mvp year but his stints in Denver/Detroit leave a lot to be desired.

The fact he played with heart in with Spain team is all that is needed given his body of work. Remember we have people who never played a single minute of nba basketball in the hall.

Yes, I know exactly who is up there. What does that have to do with my statement?? He falls into the Pau category.

Pretty stoked about the immediate results. I've got two buds who are diehard Lakers fans and pretty knowledgeable by my account. Yet they're lukewarm about Pau's place among the Lakers greats.

Even without the international merits, I feel he is deserving. He's already one of the most versatile power forwards to ever don the Purple and Gold and he's been a solid trooper through the good times and bad (being badly misused by coaches and trade bait). We won two more trophies thanks in LARGE part to Pau and that is the main point in any argument.

He didn't play for the Lakers long enough to have his jersey retired by them. That's insane. In fact I doubt any team will retire his jersey. He's played on too many of them. He was a good player that bounced around.

Would the Celtics retire Garnett's number? Or Ray Allen? Absolutely not. Lakers don't need to lower their standards either.

If you are only going to value a couple titles, then retire Horry and Byron too.

Would he enter the HOF as a Laker or Grizzly? I'd think Laker due to the rings but Grizzly for tenure?
