If you stretch Deng and trade JC for nothing, you still don't get under the cap. Then if Randle signs an offer elsewhere, what do you do?

If you think Randle fits with Ball/Ingram/PG/LBJ, we will have to agree to disagree.

As you can see, this doesn’t bring the Lakers under the cap. And short of trading some three-person combination of Larry Nance, Kyle Kuzma, Josh Hart and Ivica Zubac, it won’t get them under the cap.

Quite simply, the Lakers have to trade Deng.

Getting two max FA's is very doable.
You can stretch Deng, trade Clarkson for picks and stay under the cap if: LeBron takes $4.2mil less than his max, or we sign another $30mil FA like Cousins.
Read the article in the link, it explains all the options very clearly.

Everything starts with Deng because there is no way to have two max without moving him.

Two options with Deng-- trade or stretch. Clearly trade is better. More space created and another team pays his 2yr/36M remaining.

Difficult? Sure. That's why somebody valuable has to be involved. Ball and Ingram are untouchable, so it comes to Randle whose free agency is another factor in cap management. If a team offers him a front-loaded contract in early July? How do you react?

Another option of stretch + JC for nothing presents two downsides: not enough space cleared, and the possibility of Randle leaving for nothing. It is hardly a plan A in my book.

I don't think you're clear on what I'm saying.

I never proposed JC for nothing in return. Obviously, the team would try to get as much back as possible for him. Clarkson would be moved for picks, the same as Williams was. At this point all that can be said is that it seems likely that someone would take him in exchange for draft picks, his play would dictate how much, or how little, that would be.

Randle can be kept by allowing a cap hold for $12.4mil. This amount is almost exactly what Clarkson's salary would be.

Deng can be stretched at $7.6mil and either Clarkson or Randle can be kept leaving $62.8mil in cap space. PG is eligible for a max deal of $30.9mil, which leaves $31.9 for another player. Only LeBron is eligible to make more than this ($36mil) and it's my belief that he'd take the slightly lower amount if he wanted to play here. Any other FA would only be eligible for a contract of $30.9mil.
With this plan we keep Lonzo, Ingram, Randle, Nance, Kuzma, Zubac and Hart, as well as whatever Clarkson might bring in the way of picks.

That's a lot of talent with two max FA's and I don't think any other team can come close to what we'll offer.

Are you sure about those calculations?

I worked through the numbers on a $103 million salary cap and came up slightly short ($1.5 million) of being able to afford two mid tier (30%) Max contracts with the other players that you retained.

I had already seen that and that is why I did my own calculations.

First, the background information.

Section 7. Maximum Annual Salary.

(a) Notwithstanding any other provision of this Agreement, no Player
Contract entered into on or after the effective date of this Agreement may
provide for a Salary plus Unlikely Bonuses in the first Season covered by
the Contract that exceeds the following amounts:
(i) for any player who has completed fewer than seven (7)
Years of Service, the greater of (x) twenty-five percent
(25%) of the Salary Cap in effect at the time the Contract is
executed, or (y) one hundred five percent (105%) of the
Salary for the final Season of the player’s prior Contract;

Season covered by his Player Contract (“5th Year Eligible
Players”) shall be eligible to receive from his Prior Team up
to thirty percent (30%) of the Salary Cap in effect at the

Section 6. Minimum Player Salary.

...no Player Contract shall provide for a Salary of less than the applicable scale amount contained in the Minimum Annual Salary Scale applicable for such Salary Cap Year. For the 2017-18 Salary Cap Year, the Minimum Annual Salary Scale is set forth as Exhibit C hereto. For each Salary Cap Year commencing with the 2018-19 Salary Cap Year, the Minimum Annual
Salary Scale amounts shall be adjusted by applying the percentage increase
(or decrease) in the Salary Cap from the preceding Salary Cap Year to the
current Salary Cap Year. The Minimum Annual Salary Scale applicable to
a player is determined by the Salary Cap Year encompassing the first
Season covered by the player’s Contract.

Thomas Bryant is making $815,615 this season which is the minimum salary.

(1) If at any time from July 1 through the day prior to the first day
of the Regular Season a Team has fewer than twelve (12) players,
determined in accordance with Section 4(f)(2) below, included in

its Team Salary, then the Team’s Team Salary shall be increased by
an amount calculated as follows:
STEP 1: Subtract from twelve (12) the number of players
included in Team Salary.
STEP 2: If the result in Step 1 is a positive number, multiply the
result in Step 1 by the Minimum Annual Salary
applicable to players with zero (0) Years of Service
under the Minimum Annual Salary Scale for that Salary
Cap Year.
(2) In determining whether a Team has fewer than twelve (12)
players included in its Team Salary for purposes of Section 4(f)(1)
above only, the only players who shall be counted are (i) players
under Contract with the Team who are included in Team Salary,
(ii) Free Agents who are included in Team Salary pursuant to
Section 4(a)(2) above, (iii) players to whom Offer Sheets have been
given, and (iv) unsigned First Round Picks who are included in
Team Salary pursuant to Section 4(e) above.

65. How do released or stretched players apply to team salary? What is set-off?

Quote:

As described in question number 64, if the contract had more than $250,000 in remaining guaranteed salary, the remaining guaranteed salary is paid over twice the number of remaining years, plus one, per the Stretch provision. The team gets to choose whether the player's cap hit is stretched as well, or stays on its original schedule.

If he really impresses we can get something in return for him, if he plays like a superstar he is a keeper, if he plays like he uses to play with slight improvement due to better conditioning and one offseason training he is probably gone.

The good is that we have Nance that was our best PF last season and Kuzma that had a superb summer league and is more of a modern player than both Nance and Randle.

Good job.

For the time being, JC is with the team so I would suggest having him listed too.

I hope it's clear enough for people to know that trading Deng is much better than stretching, and keeping Randle is not a given.

You essentially would have to move Hart or Zubac then. Neither of which would be hard to do. You could also renounce their rights and try to re-sign them back under the veterans minimum.

Either way. If you could get Cousins, George, and retain Randle and all you had to do was part with Hart or Zubac at that point? Then Hart or Zubac will be moved. Not that hard to figure.

I'd personally be behind getting one max this year and then going for another the next off-season where the crop of available max players and depth players are a plenty, the gem obviously being Kyrie.

For the record, for the 2017/18 league year, the tax line is
$119.266MM
Hard Cap is $125.266MM

The Projected Salary Cap for the 2018-2019 season is 103M with the tax line at $125 million.

The cap's initial estimation was 108M. So the reality is that the number will probably fall between both numbers and even if it was at its lowest of 103, two max's + retaining Randle is still able to be done. If we had to part with Hart or Zubac for Cousins and George, it won't be that hard of a decision to make.

If it raises to 105, then it's still possible and we wouldn't need to part with Hart or Zubac.

Anyway, what I'm trying to say is/ 30/30 + Randle is VERY possible, to the extend that it shouldn't be seen as any kind of necessity to move him.

It would probably also be wisest to wait till you actually get commitment from one, let alone two max guys before you start thinking about moving anyone.

Thanks Bard.

So if we find a way to get Randle, JC, and Deng off the books. We'd have 81.7 million to split among free agents.

Westbrook, LBJ, and PG13 could take 27 mill a piece. No too bad of a pay cut. Still making more than Durant.

Some time later today with Clarkson still on the roster.

Projected cap is 102, not 103 so you fall one more million short.
Lebron will not make any discount, so actually you are 5.2 millions short.
And with vacant roster spots charge you actually are 6.8 millions short.

When a player (Hart, Zubac etc) is taken away to lower the overall team salary, another Minimum salary ($847,773) has to be added to get the roster back to twelve per the CBA.

So the reduction in team salary would be for the difference between what the player was making and $847,773 (Min salary) rather than all of what the player was making.

I worked through the numbers on a $103 million salary cap and came up slightly short ($1.5 million) of being able to afford two mid tier (30%) Max contracts with the other players that you retained.

Probably due to cap hold of vacant spots.

I had been using $102 million and $103 million suddenly became the flavor of the day for the next salary cap.

Since they wanted to discuss things at $103, I went along with that. If things shift back to $102 as the most likely number, then I am ready for that as well.

All the speculation is great, however, if the current core show real signs
of life the FO should think long and hard of just adding one STAR. Someone
that could help the current group take the next step.

Selling the farm to get 2 stars may sound great but what if they don't
mix well? Adding a piece would be far easier to integrate.

This, of course, if the current group is actually one step away. IF, by the contrary, they are far away we'd have to blow things up anyway. However,
starting over and over again could be a step forward or backwards; IMO.

Not sure why maxing Boogie is a good idea, especially in today's NBA where defense and switchability on defense is paramount. Boogie is not a good defender, and is probably rated as an atrocious switch defender. If you don't think LBJ is the answer (and you don't think PG13 is either), then why do you think Boogie is? Unless jules improves on defense big-time, how does a Jules/Boogie frontcourt on defense at the tune of probably close to 50m/year combined help this team win championships?

What would be hilarious is if the Lakers instead go with a combination of WB and LeBron with PG left hanging.

Nerlens Noel's contract standoff with the Mavs is interesting and instructive to see what may happen with Jules next offseason. Noel is IMO, as of now (maybe Jules can displace him this season), a more valuable rim protecting/switchable center who the Mavs are lowballing. Could Noel just take the QO and be an UFA in 2018? Is that a path Jules may take too?

The cap space in 2018 is going to be less, and I'm not sure how many teams will want to give Jules 19-20m+ a year.

Dream Scenario

Lakers Bulls Trade:

Clarkson
Deng
First Rounder

for

Wade

Why for Lakers: Obvious reasons but for arguments sake, we get out of the deng deal, set up next year, recruit lebron, wade can help as 6th man.

Why for Bulls: They are in rebuild mode. They get nice piece in clarkson but do this for the first rounder. They get a former all star with the franchise to mentor their young guys. They have the space and need to use it anyway (ala brooklyn). They are not signing anyone significant next year so instead load up on draft picks. Deng known as one of the best if not the best locker room guys (although i didnt see much from lakers). But he's a BULL. He has clout in that organization. They need to bring back their own. Fans who remember how great he was will embrace him. And those that don't will like the young prospects. Further, they give up nothing. They are likely going to buy Wade out anyway.

Thanks Bard.

So if we find a way to get Randle, JC, and Deng off the books. We'd have 81.7 million to split among free agents.

Westbrook, LBJ, and PG13 could take 27 mill a piece. No too bad of a pay cut. Still making more than Durant.

$9 mil a year isn't too bad of a pay cut?

Where are we getting $73 mil? Westbrook and Lebron would be playing with a skeleton crew.

Your scenario is possible, we got Calderon last summer from the Bulls, so we have some possible connections on a Wade deal, some people think he's gonna jump ship to join a contender, but I think he wouldn't mind playing here and possibly teaming up with LeBron next summer her wife is also involved with the entertainment industry so that's also another reason.

Not that i think it's feasible, but LBJ/WB/PG13 is overkill and too many chefs in the kitchen. If they were willing to take such large paycuts, would spend it on other holes on the team (defensive guards, mobile defensive center).

I'd love to to have that problem. GS has 2 of the last 4 MVPs. I want the same. And PG13 is comparable to Klay.
It would actually be a fair fight. But it won't happen. I'm just a dreamer.
We'll probably get 2 all stars and wait for Ingram and Ball to take the next step.

I'm saying that it's not just the more names...but the fit. WB/LBJ is a terrible fit IMO. WB/LBJ/PG13 is just wasting PG13 as a spot up shooter basically.

If you could have say LBJ/PG13/KCP/Lopez for the same amount, I think a deeper and more balanced team.

That's like saying Dany and her 3 dragons are overkill for the enemy in the North. No...that's a huge ass army of dead men and white walkers, you gone need 3 big ass dragons. (bleep) bring the dothraki, unsullied, and the entire 7 kingdoms too. Gonna need all of them.
