Strength Summary: Young Lakers in the Offseason

BRANDON INGRAM
DiFrancesco: Brandon is stronger then he looks, first of all. I’ve seen it in the weight room, but also heard it from several players that are on the court with him. Part of that comes from the fact that he moves so efficiently. When you can move your body like that, you’re getting where you need to go more quickly and easily, which will produce more strength. That shows up in his game as well, where he’s so smooth, and can make basketball look effortless. There’s no question that we’re slowly but surely going to want to add some lean muscle mass to him as his career progresses, but we want to do it in a controlled manner that’s necessary for him to do what he wants to do on the court. He’s been really, really good with that. It just takes time when you have a more lean frame. His workouts are going to be a bit more extensive, with more reps, than somebody like Julius Randle that already has more of a robust frame. Brandon understands that, and will often come in early so we have more time for his workouts. We’re putting pennies in a piggy bank, and you may not notice when it’s a quarter full, but it’s going to build up steadily. It’s important not to rush the process of just trying to bulk him up, because you’d have to do unreasonable work in unreasonable time. His issue to gain lean mass does not exist in a vacuum. He also needs to be a productive NBA player. Brandon’s main responsibility is on the court. Our doing work with him off the court is a supplement to that.

IVICA ZUBAC
DiFrancesco: For a guy that big, Ivica moves really well. A lot of times the taller guys with bigger frames are harder to put through squats and lunges because of longer levers that can be harder to move, but that’s not as much the case with him. He’s pretty efficient with his movement. He hasn’t really been exposed to a lot of resistance training or weightlifting in the past, so he’s going to see some quick gains now that we have him on a program. He’s already added some muscle fairly quickly, which will only help him. He’s reporting for duty ready to do whatever it takes, with a great attitude. He’s very, very coachable and excited to learn new things and be a part of all the things that it means to be a pro basketball player in the NBA. At 19, he’s getting exposed to a lot more volume of work on the court, as well, where a lot of this is new.

D’ANGELO RUSSELL
DiFrancesco: The biggest thing with D’Angelo was finding a larger window where we were able to work together more consistently for longer stretches, and that was really important once he returned from Louisville (his offseason home). He did a great job taking advantage of that, and he’s always been willing to do the work. Specifically, we wanted to develop D’Angelo’s lower body strength, balance and explosiveness, while also taking advantage of his frame being longer and bigger than other guards. We wanted to add some lean muscle to his frame, as we started last year. We definitely saw progress there. His ability to endure certain weights, rep counts and exercises improved significantly. He’s come a long way in understanding the expectations. One thing that’s been important for D’Angelo is that he’s genuinely excited about Luke Walton and his staff being in here, and that’s made him really eager to be in the building. I think we’ll see the benefits on the floor this season.

LARRY NANCE, JR.
DiFrancesco: Once Larry hurt his wrist*, we had to modify and manipulate a lot of the lifting aspects of what we were doing. We steered around that to focus on core, hip and lower body balance and strength exercises and other things that didn’t require grip. Who knows, maybe it was a blessing in disguise to target specific areas to make real progress in. Within the past two weeks or so, once he was fully cleared with the wrist, he was chomping at the bit to return to our usual upper and lower body routines with load, grip and everything else. One of my favorite things about Larry is he’s a “why” guy, wanting to know why we’re doing everything so he can best understand. That’s a really good sign that a guy is engaged and taking accountability of his craft, profession and body and not blindly going through the motions of things just to do them. It’s an impressive, mature quality about him. Lower body wise with Larry, it’s a continuous process to maintain the progress and strength gains we’ve made. He’s a big guy that gets way up in the air, and with someone that big who gets that high, we always have to make sure we’re preparing those structures to bear the load when he comes down.

JULIUS RANDLE
DiFrancesco: Julius was always here (at the practice facility), typically two times a day throughout the summer. I had to check in with him the following day as to what he did the night before. We’d always lift in the morning, but most evenings he was coming back in to shoot and do work on the court. With Julius, he’s almost always texting me asking me when we can get a work out in. Some guys it goes the other way, where I’ll be leading the way. He’s really evolved rapidly in terms of his approach, which he’s taken to another level. We work a lot on movement efficiency and hip mobility, encouraging smooth movement patterns through explosive action. His hips are strong but sometimes tight, so that was a focus.

JORDAN CLARKSON
DiFrancesco: Jordan is a guy I never have to worry about or babysit. He will come in and do his work. I put his workouts on the board for him, and he knows how to execute, because we’ve been working together for a while now. We made significant progress and quick gains in lean mass and strength from the day he stepped in after the Draft to the end of his rookie year, and now it’s about maintaining the gains we made. He plays a high-octane, violent and explosive game and needs to be able to have the stimulus of mechanical loading and resistance training so that the support structures in his body – the ligaments, tendons and bones – are strong enough to withstand slowing down, decelerating and landing from the high speeds and jumps. That’s where our focus on him is and has been.

Great news all around, Julius really sounds like that 'quiet' hard worker that just comes in and does it. Him being there at the gym 3 times a day throughout the summer, as well as what he was doing to work out outside the court which we've also seen bodes well for not just his work ethic but his probability of improving as a player on the upswing.

Everyone else from Russell to Clarkson, It's great news, as well as hearing about Ingram's strength

Thanks for posting, it was a good read. Nice to have a little more insight into exactly what each player is doing.

Good read - thanks.

He puts all of them in a very positive light. Is Grass Fed also a diplomat or this is a team with a stellar attitude? I think it's a bit of both.

Interesting comments on Zubac - never lifted (and he still weighs 265 or so, right?) now he's putting on some muscle, and he's fairly efficient/mobile for a guy his size. That's a good thing to hear from the trainer. I'm still thinking this guy could eventually be more versatile than we expect, perhaps we'll see him cover a little more ground on defense than advertised for instance.

Good to see the comments reflecting the enthusiasm from DLO and the professionalism shown by Clarkson and Randle when it comes to putting in the work.

Good read. This is a really likable team.

Good news on BI's natural strength. Zubac could potentially be a beast - and he's not even done growing. DLO - He could be the best post up PG in the league next yr. Larry is smart - wanting to know the why behind his training rather than blindly trusting speaks volumes. Julius man - taking some pages from Kobe in the gym workin like all day. JC - Seems like he knows his role now that he owns the SG spot.
