When he calls his final game I honestly think I might cry. |

I changed the title slightly because it almost gave me a heart attack thinking something happened to him. |

As a kid, I spent many a night, doing homework and listening to either Vin or Chick. I feel like the last remaining shred of my childhood is being taken away.

Feel blessed that it lasted this long. While Chick lost a lot on the fastball, what makes it so hard with Vin is that he's just as sharp as ever. Calling two games at the same time at his age... unreal.

For Scully, 88, the most poetic sports broadcaster of all time, his career will have a poetic ending.
He grew up in New York. As he walked home from school one afternoon, at age 8, he passed a laundry that displayed the score of that day’s World Series game: New York Yankees 18, New York Giants 4.
“As a little kid, my first thought was, ‘Oh, those poor Giants.’ From that little kernel, I developed a desire and a love for baseball. Since the Giants were 20 city blocks from my school and I could get there thanks to the Catholic Youth Organization and the Police Athletic League, I could go to games free, Monday through Friday. So I became a very big Giants fan. As things turn out, the last game of the season, and my last broadcast, will be against the Giants, in San Francisco, Oct. 2, 2016 — exactly 80 years to the day that I saw that Giant-Yankee scorecard.
“That is a fitting conclusion, I think, to my career.” |

Now it makes sense why he picked that game to retire. I can see why he didn't want to travel halfway across the country to do a game that might be his last considering in the playoffs any game could be the final game of the series. |

This last week, with so much attention to him, has been hard. It will only get harder. I've listened to him for 57 years now, and can't imagine the game without him.

http://www.gq.com/story/vin-scully-is-a-legend-but-not-a-saint
Quote: | Legendary is the story of the blustery political commentator who years ago had ‘his people’ advise the Dodgers he wanted to meet Scully because Scully was “number one” in his field. “Everywhere I go, Mr. Scully, I try to meet whoever is Number One because I’m Number One in what I do and it’s important to recognize and salute those of my own stature, and you’re Number One here!” The man bellowed on like this for several moments as the crew in the Dodger booth squirmed. When he finally paused, too impressed with himself to sense Scully’s anger, Scully quietly, politely, and efficiently cut the blowhard into little pieces. “Well then, you’ll want to meet Arthur here, who is our Number One stage manager.” The commentator found himself unwillingly shaking hands. “And of course, you’ll want to meet Debbie, she’s our Number One makeup artist.” Another unhappy handshake. “And Don, our Number One cameraman—who, coincidentally is on Camera Number One.” Again with the handshake. “And in the row behind you, that’s Antonio, our Number One intern…” Witnesses disagree as to how many Numbers One Scully introduced before the man angrily muttered “I gotta go”—but all agreed he was several feet shorter when he went. |

They really don't. Just pure class, funny, warm-hearted, good natured with wonderful demeanors. _________________ "The best there is. The best there was. The best there ever will be.", said Bret Hart regarding the Los Angeles Lakers. |

same here. What a great man. He will be missed. My son's 4 and will probably, vaguely remember him. He calls him Uncle Vin. _________________ Thank you, Kobe. We love you. |

Its sad, but he's given to us a lot more than we have in return. I'm just glad we the fans were able to show our token of appreciation these last couple of years. I remember as Laker fans we weren't able to do the same for Chick Hearn before he left us. |

This was a letter from Scully given out to fans in attendance today and I felt it needed to be shared here.
THE LEGEND Vin Scully wrote: | Dear Friends:
Many years ago, a little red-headed boy was walking home from school, passing a Chinese laundry and stopped to see the score of a World Series game posted in the window. The Yankees beat the Giants, 18-4, on October 2, 1936. The boy’s reaction was pity for the Giants and he became a rabid Giants’ fan from that day forward, until the joyous moment when he was hired to broadcast Brooklyn Dodgers games in 1950. Ironically, October 2, 2016 will mark my final broadcast of a Giants-Dodgers game. It will also be exactly 80 years to the day since that little boy fell in love with baseball.
God has been very generous to that little boy, allowing him to fulfill a dream of becoming a broadcaster and to live it for 67 years. Since 1958, you and I have grown up together through the good times and the bad. The transistor radio is what bound us together. Were you at the Coliseum when we sang “Happy Birthday” to an umpire? Were you among the crowd that groaned at one of my puns? Did you kindly laugh at one of my little jokes? Did I put you to sleep with the transistor radio tucked under your pillow?
You were simply always there for me. I have always felt that I needed you more than you needed me and that holds true to this very day. I have been privileged to share in your passion and love for this great game.
My family means everything to me and I will now be able to share life’s experiences with them. My wife, Sandi, our children, Kevin, Todd, Erin, Kelly, and Catherine, along with our entire family will join me in sharing God’s blessings of that precious gift of time.
You folks have truly been “The Wind Beneath My Wings” and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for joining me on this incredible journey of 67 years of broadcasting Dodger baseball.
Heartfelt Thanks,
Vin Scully |
