Coming Up Short Down the Stretch… The Lakers got a taste of some better competition against the Blazers coming off their playoff run from last year. Despite a red hot Damian Lillard and a stone cold D’Angelo Russell, they stayed with the Blazers. The two teams trading leads all game long.

Down the stretch, Luke went with some deeper bench mixed in with some of their stars and couldn’t close (despite Portland resting some of their key players). Julius Randle had a big turnover in the final minute and Russell couldn’t connect on a good look at three to win the game at the buzzer. In overtime, Jordan Clarkson had a chance to tie it with a three and couldn’t connect, either, and the Lakers fell 109-106.

“I was happy with the way we competed. I told the guys, that’s a good team,” Luke said.

The offense was a little choppier at times with a lot more post-up iso ball than we’ve seen. Luke also experimented with some extended run with small ball units and closed with that. It’s the fourth game of the preseason and he’s still getting a feel for the roster combinations.

It’s a deep team, so he’s trying to find everyone’s niche. They’re also still learning how to deal with the different ways teams attack. Portland stretches the floor very well.

“It’s a great learning tool for us to be able to play a team that plays that style and now get to the tape and break it down and show the players exactly what we saw,” Luke said. “So far after each preseason game, they’ve really responded with what the teaching points have been. Obviously, you want to win but it’s more important to learn from the night.”

Russell -- -- Tough defensive matchup with the Lillard, who bombed threes from deep behind the three throughout the night. He dominated the night in short minutes. Slower start to this game than the last two, no 20-point first half for Russell. He seemed a bit short on shots throughout the night and never found his range. “Offensively, I’ve got to figure out ways to get guys involved more as far as when the shot’s not falling,” Russell said. “It’s just a learning experience.” He said his teammates and coaches told him to keep shooting as they were good looks. Luke had some supreme confidence in Russell calling for the loop play out of a timeout late in OT with Russell already 0-8 from three. Russell missed that three, too, 0-9 from behind the ark. Just stone cold. “I encouraged him to keep shooting if he was open,” Luke said, mentioning they were wide open, good looks. “Next time, I’ll assume they’ll go in,” Luke said. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 6-21 shooting (0-9 from three) to go with 4 boards, 1 assist, 2 turnovers and 5 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a -13. The Action: He missed a fading pull-up jumper (watching too much of Lou). He pushed it out and no-looked a pass to Mozgov for the dunk. He faked behind his back on the drive and hit the baseline floater. He lost his man on a high screen and hit the elbow jumper. He lulled his man to sleep, then powered in a baseline layup over him. He was blocked trying to sneak up a three over his man. After a long rest, he missed a three in transition. He missed a three off a screen, way short. He had 6 points on 3-7 shooting. Second Half: He hit Mozgov with the pocket pass for FTs. He missed a three in transition. He was blocked on a drive and wanted the call. Way short on a wing pull-up jumper. He swished the pull-up jumper from the other wing, working off the screen. He missed a three in transition. He attacked the paint and came up short on the runner. He missed an open three off the screen. He attacked the paint and scored a layup in a crowd with over a minute left. He missed a three behind screen out of a timeout. He missed a three trailing the break in transition to win it, uggh. Overtime: He set up Yi for FTs (nearly an And-1 dunk) to start the OT. He attacked the paint, let a man fly by and scored easily off the glass. He airballed a short one, looking to pass and forcing it up when the pass wasn’t there. He spun on his man and missed the short one in the post. We setup a loop for him to shoot a three out of a timeout, he missed. He got sealed horribly on a switch to give up a killer dunk and 5-point lead in the final minute.

Randle -- -- “He might have more than me,” Russell said prior to the game of Randle’s assist numbers this year. That wasn’t too hard tonight as Russell had just 1 assist, Randle 3. Randle was putting together a solid game, seemingly getting more comfortable on both ends and hitting the boards hard. We ran him a lot in the small ball lineups. A lot of responsibility for him in there. He was also responsible for a key turnover trying to push the fast break in the final minute when we were up by 2. He dribble the ball off someone’s foot, points the other way. Bad way to close the game. “I should have just brought it down instead of pushed it,” Randle said. This is all learning time still and Luke will teach. Defensively, a lot of switching, which is what we need to do when Randle is the big in there. Our advantage is not pressed by him anchoring the D, but by utilizing his superb footspeed against the smaller guards. He did a good job with that. Also, a nice tie up defensively with 15 seconds left to give the Lakers a chance at a final shot. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 5-9 shooting to go with 13 boards (3 offensive), 3 assists, 1 turnover, 1 steal, 1 block and 3 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He swished a fade across the lane on iso. He pushed it out and missed an off-balance runner, then fouled. Another foul going over the back. He got stuck in no-man’s land on an inbounds, giving up a dunk. He pounded the dribble in the post and drew FTs, making one. Monster two-handed slam down the lane off the great drive and dish from Nick. Second Half: He up-faked, then got blocked from behind on the shot. He rejected his man on a drive. He went between his legs to Nick for the transition three. He went behind his back off the dribble and muscled his way to FTs on the drive, he made both. He attacked a smaller man and drew FTs, he made one. Nice extra interior pass to Black to set him up for FTs. He smothered a guard on a drive and forced a turnover. He attacked Davis off the dribble and scored with his right. He grabbed the board, pushed it out, sealed a guard behind him, attacked the big and scored the And-1 in the paint, he missed the FT. He pushed out the break with a 2-point lead with under a minute left and dribble it off someone’s foot, bad time for a turnover as that cost them the lead. Overtime: He drew FTs on the offensive glass, he made one. He tied the Blazers up down 3 with 15 seconds to give the Lakers a chance to tie.

Deng -- -- Back in the action after a couple games off. Luke started him for the first half, then let him rest for the remainder of the game. He seemed to pick right up with his game. Some nice work on the turnaround jumpers in the post. He also had a score in transition. Short, but effective game. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-6 shooting (1-1 from the line) to go with 3 boards and 1 foul in 13:31 of action. He was a -3. The Action: He swished a turnaround on the first possession after working the post. He deflected an inbounds pass to get a stop. He lost the handle on a pass. He missed a sideline pull-up, drifting slightly. He missed a putback and wanted the foul. He took the pass in transition, hesitated, then attacked and hit he short runner. He was cut off on the drive, backed his man down instead, bumped and hit the And-1 turnaround from 13 feet, he made the FT. He missed a runner trying to create against the shotclock. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Mozgov -- -- Some moments defensively around the rim with a couple blocks in his limited time. For whatever reason, we were blocking shots tonight, but unable to finish the stop. The Blazers were regaining those possessions more than you’d like to see. Offensively, we’re doing a better job of finding him on the move in the paint with some room to be effective. His jumper has not looked effective at all so far. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-5 shooting (3-4 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 3 turnovers, 1 steal, 2 blocks and 3 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He threw a wild pass on a drive and dish baseline, turnover. He was fouled on the lob from Lou, he made both FTs. Good job running the floor and Russell hit him for the dunk. Awful pass out of a timeout, right to the D (not sure what he was thinking there). He missed an open jumper from the top of the key. He blocked a shot, but gave up the And-1 on the putback. He rejected a drive, but we couldn’t recover it. He crashed the glass after setting the high screen, grabbed the board and hit the jumphook. Second Half: He deflected and saved a pass on D, hustled down court and finished the lob from Lou on the other. He traveled instead of going strong at the rim off the pass. He dunked off the drive and dish from Nick. This time he tried attacking the rim strong off the screen-roll and drew FTs, he made one.

Williams -- -- Not hot like the last game. Both the Lakers starting guards just couldn’t connect with consistency. Williams didn’t look to draw fouls like the previous games (although he should have been there once and the refs didn’t call it…so maybe he read the situation with them and focused on making plays. He had 4 assists tonight, again finding Mozgov with the pass. Those two have shown a little bit of chemistry in the past couple of games. I’m looking forward to seeing that grow (as well as Russell working better with Mozgov). The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-6 shooting (1-2 from three) to go with 1 board, 4 assists, 2 turnovers, 1 steal and no fouls in 21 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He missed a floater in the lane. He lobbed to Mozgov who was fouled. He missed another floater in the lane. Quick strike off a change of pace in transition and he scored the layup. He was blocked on a pull-up expecting the foul. Wild pass or shot, not close to the rim on a drive. He missed a long three after hesitating (probably should have reset the offense). Nice challenge to force an airball three. Second Half: He sank a three going to his left. He faked off the three line, attacked and lobbed to Mozgov in early offense for the score. He airballed a floater out of a timeout.

Clarkson -- -- Good job again on D. He knocked away a couple of lob passes, showing good awareness and he stayed on his man for most of the night. “To us right now it’s not about wins. We’re trying to grow as a team to be ready for the regular season,” Clarkson said. He praised Luke for building chemistry and having the team more competitive. I would have liked to see a little more offensive responsibility from him. Russell was struggling some and that’s where you’d like to see Jordan take on more of the load. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-14 shooting (1-6 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He missed a tough off-balance prayer in the lane on his first attempt. He sank a quick-fire wing pull-up. He read a lob and knocked it away to get a stop. He attacked to his right, hung and scored in the lane. He missed a tough drifting three at the buzzer. He set up Nance on the screen-roll. He got another stop by fighting over the top of an illegal screen. He missed a one-hander trying to probe in a crowd. Great curl off the screen, he took the ball, elevated in traffic and scored the And-1 layup getting hit twice on the head in the process, he missed the FT. He knocked away another lob pass. He worked the dribble over to the wing and hit the three. He led the Lakers with 9 points on 4-8 shooting in the half. Second Half: He cut back door and finished the lob from Huertas. Nice D starting on his man, switching on another and forcing the turnover. He hit a floater off a ball fake in the lane on the other end. Overtime: Way short on a wing three. He missed another wing three. He choked an easy one on a drive right. He attacked the paint in early offense and drew FTs, he made both. He missed a three to tie it up with 9 seconds left.

Ingram -- -- It felt like he had just a few more moments offensively where he read the play well and executed like he’s used to. Hints that he’s starting to get a little feel for the game on that end of the floor. Both his scores were in transition, so it wasn’t against set defenses. He sank a three and had a massive dunk in transition for his points. He should have scored a couple more points, but blew his FTs after getting hit on a jumper. Got to knock those down. The Lakers were a poor 16-26 from the line. That’s the game, right there. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-6 shooting (1-3 from three, 0-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 turnover, 1 block and 1 foul in 24 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He was rejected from behind after taking contact on a drive (player brought his arms down instead of going vertical, seemed like a foul). He crashed the glass and reset the offense. He missed a post turnaround to start the second quarter. He sank a wing three in transition next time down (first NBA three of the preseason). He tracked his man from behind as Black switched and Ingram rejected him badly. He up-faked, moved in a step and was fouled on the pull-up (that’s where that height comes to play, just too long for the D trying to challenge that pull-up), he missed both FTs. Second Half: He missed a three off the hop on a kickout. He attacked baseline and threw it away for a dunk the other way. He missed a rushed three up against the shotclock. He took a pass in the lane trailing the break and Huertas hit him for the slam. Overtime: Nothing to report.

Nance -- -- Some tough love from the officials in the first half. He seemed a little frustrated with the calls and no calls. Officiating was pretty poor, I thought. Not a lot of notes and action for Nance. He wasn’t as disruptive as he was in the first couple of games. Luke kept his minutes low tonight maybe to give him some rest, maybe to see some other combos out there. Some nice touch around the rim on floaters in this game. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-2 shooting to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 1 turnover, 1 steal, 1 block and 4 fouls in 15 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He shed a smaller man, took the high entry and scored the 4-footer. He was hit on a screen-roll but still finished the floater. Second Half: He found Black sealing his man under the rim off the horns sequence for a layup.

Young -- -- A well-rounded game from Nick. He had some excellent moments on D (with a block and a steal) and generally staying focused on that end. Offensively, he hit big shots as we called his number off some set plays like some elevator screens on the wing, where he hit a three, or curling off a screen with a man chasing him and setting up a big for a score. Late in the game, he cooled off a little offensively. Still, this is the type of two-way game you want from Nick. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-12 shooting (4-7 from three, 0-1 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 1 turnover, 1 steal, 1 block and 1 foul in 23 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He smothered his man on D, rejected the shot and saved it inbounds to ignite a breakaway score. He missed a chuck from the wing. He attacked off the three line and zipped a pass to Randle trailing the break for the slam. He came off the elevator screens at the wing and drained the three (that will make some points with Luke, hitting when he draws up a play). He missed a three in transition. Second Half: He swished a wing three in transition off the between-the-legs pass from Randle. He swished a sideline three on a busted set. He drained an And-1 three next time down, he missed the FT to blow the 4-point play. Perfect job curling into the lane off a screen with his man trailing, he drew the help D and hit Mozgov for the dunk. He was hit from behind by Mozgov and barked at the ref after missing the jumper, he then took an intentional foul. He missed a wing three. He missed an open three in transition. He curled into the paint, missed the pull-up, followed his shot and scored the putback. He missed a wing stepback out of a timeout.

Black -- -- He seems to have the backup C spot secured. We did go with a lot of Randle out there, but Black has worked his way into the rotation with his consistent effort and energy. I’d like to see him gather and finish strong at the rim a little more in crowds under the hoop (like Bass last year). Some nice sequences where he sealed defenders with excellent position under the hoop. He talked about Luke instilling confidence in people. Black certainly seems to be playing with confidence. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-5 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go witih 4 boards, 1 turnover, 1 steal and 3 fouls in 18:33. He was a +3. The Action: He kept a board alive and we regained the possession. He was called for a foul shortly later on the offensive boards. He choked a lefty layup off a spin. Second Half: He drew FTs on the interior feed from Randle, he made one. He came off the high post from the horns, sealed his man down low, took the pass and scored a layup. He choked a layup after a great seal under the hoop to get good position. Overpassing in the lane, points the other way. He follow slammed a missed Huertas runner.

Huertas -- -- He was the first backup PG off the bench tonight. Good game from Huertas orchestrating the offense. He and Black worked that screen-roll quite a bit. The Blazers were defending the pass a lot, so Huertas had to make them pay. He got it rolling a bit in the second half on some of those sequences. That got him to the double digits in points. Good battle going on with the backup PGs. Huertas was making a case tonight. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-8 shooting (1-1 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 5 assists, 1 turnover and no fouls in 17:34. He was a +10. The Action: He missed a runner. He missed another baseline running jumper (got to make those open ones). He had the ball tipped away from behind, it bounced off someone right back to him, he spun and scored the layup. He sank an open sideline three in transition. His bounce pass was picked off. Second Half: He lobbed to Clarkson backdoor for the score. Not close on a fading runner trying to create against the shotclock. He finally swished the runner coming off the high screen on a two-for-one sequence. He banked in the runner working the two-man game with Black. He missed a runner from the elbow, but Black cleaned it up. He hit Ingram trailing the break for the slam. He probed off the screen and drew FTs at the rim with some nice work to create contact, and he made both FTs.

Brown -- -- He came in for Clarkson early in the fourth to get some run. He missed his only shot. Had some good moments of D, nothing spectacular, but steady. Still, Luke went back to Clarkson down the stretch after that brief stint. Brown has a tendency to not impact games, negatively or positively, where you don’t really notice him. Sometimes that’s good, but you’d really hope to see a bit more on either end. Right now, Nick is putting Brown on the deep bench with his play. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting and had no other stats in 6:32. He was a +0. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He missed a pull-up jumper, wide left.

Yi -- -- Better game for Yi. He came in for some fourth quarter run with the score evened up and anyone’s game and stayed for the remainder of the night. He got thrown to the floor by Davis in one tie up that should have been another offensive foul on Ed, but the call went against Yi and the Blazers hit a three. That was a big possession in a key stretch of the game. Offensively, he sank a jumper and a couple FTs getting fouled on what looked like it should have been an And-1 dunk. He had an awful moment where he passed on a good shot and attacked for a horrible one. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-3 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards and 2 fouls in 13:15. He was a -3. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He swished a 20-footer on his first touch. He picked up an offensive foul on Davis on the other end. He threw up a prayer after hesitating on a jumper and driving instead. Bogus foul, getting thrown to the floor by Davis. Overtime: He was fouled on a dunk off the nice feed from Russell, he made both FTs. He missed an open jumper at the top of the key. Some nice D on an inbounds contesting the ball out of bounds to force a timeout.

Walton -- -- With Deng back in the starting lineup, both teams traded hoops out of the gates, tied 14-14 when the timeout came midway through the quarter… Black, Ingram, Nance in for Mozgov, Randle and Deng out of that timeout… After Lillard drained a couple of deep threes to take a 7-point lead, Luke called a timeout… Clarkson and Huertas come in out of that timeout… Luke not pleased and called another quick timeout, talking to Black about some poor execution… The Lakers trimmed a 10-point Blazer lead in half, trailing 29-24 after the first quarter… Score tied when Randle returned for Nance after 2 minutes… Deng in at PF across Randle, Lakers up 4… Ingram out for Young, Clarkson out for Lou, Lakers up 5 with 8 minutes left. Even smaller unit… Russell in for Huertas (long rest for Russell)… Lakers continue with the small ball with Randle at the C spot… Clarkson in for Lou… Black in for Deng with 1:33 left to run with Mozgov… Ingram in for Black 30 seconds later… The score was tied up 50-50 at the half. No Laker scoring in double digits… Young starting for Deng in the second half… The Lakers pulled out to an 8-point lead to force a timeout early in the quarter… Lakers in the bonus after 4 minutes… Clarkson, Black in for Mozgov and Williams… Ingram in for Nick, score tied again… Nance in for Randle… Russell out for Huertas, tied up still with under 3 minutes left… The Lakers trailed 80-79 heading into the fourth… He sat Clarkson for Brown with under 10 minutes. Must be looking to get others some minutes because Clarkson was balling. So we brought in some deeper bench… Tied up with 8 minutes left and he went with the Yi, Nance, Young, Brown, Huertas unit… Randle in for Nance and Russell in for Huertas, up 2 with 7 minutes left… Clarkson back in for Brown with 3:14 left, Lakers down by 2… Nice team D by this unit to force a shotclock violation on a long heave from three… Timeout with 45 seconds left, Russell missed a three behind a screen… Overtime: He went with Randle, Yi, Ingram, Clarkson, Russell… Down three after giving up a breakaway score, Luke called timeout… They called the loop for Russell to miss a three out of the timeout, should have gone to Clarkson as Russell was stone cold… Down 3, they didn’t take a foul and tied up the Blazers…

A bit of a typo in Clarkson's quote of growing as a "team" other than that, excellent break down once again DB

The regular rotation is deeper and better than expected. An encouraging preseason so far.

Russell/ Calderon/ Huertas
Lou/JC
Deng/Ingram/Young
Randle/Nance
Mozgov/Black

Others:
Zu--raw
AB--inconsistent, or consistently invisible
Yi-- I am not a 5
TRob-- neither am I
Everybody else-- when will the cut come

any source mentioning lou will start instead of lou come regular season? 3angelo and JC seems too good of a combination to be separated imo.

anyway, nice one DB! were seeing definite improvements in the youngsters and i especially love the defensive rotation this year, its crisp and quick.

the one thing is dlo seem to always got caught in screens and make things easier for lillard. i hope the coaching staff teach the young guards to fight the screens so when they go above the screen to contest the shooter they dont got caught/stuck

Thanks DB.

Luke stating the obvious about the team competing against the Blazers and not looking at a win as a necessary tool.

Thanks DB! Excellent write-up as always.

Lillard 6 for 9 from downtown, some waaaay downtown. Russell, uncharacteristically, 0 for 9 from beyond the stripe. That's an 18 point swing based on Lillard getting red hot and DLO being ice cold. Still, Russell had the open looks. Wide open towards the end. Not often he gets this cold.

Stotts trotted out his deep bench late in the game, Lakers should have easily won this but they were way cold, one or two mistakes too many, and of course the Yi tackle/foul I don't know what the ref's logic was...

Looked like the Laker guards weren't ready for how far Lillard could stretch the floor with consistency. It was nice seeing the early rebounding advantage, too bad that disappeared by mid-game.

In spite of all that, great hustle out there. Plenty of reasons for hope. We stayed even that first half when Portland was playing its good rotation. Nance is still awesome. BI is actually developing at a visible pace still, Huertas scored when they played the pass, Clarkson played a good 2 way game, everyone had their good moments, even Russell. I haven't seen Young this effective for a long long time. I hope he can repeat this regular season because I think he's played his way into the rotation.

Glad this was preseason.

Thanks, DB!!!

Luke also mentioned that (on nights like last night) that he'd like for DLo to look for ways to get teammates shots.

As ALWAYS, your observations are refreshing and accurately detailed

With this very YOUNG team, production will not be consistent with the young players. All appearances have initially shown the Deng will be a good role model for Ingram, Randle, JC and DLo on how to make an effective impact on games when their offense is not on.

Calderon and Huertsas are showing what can happen when a PG is effective in getting teammates involved

Will the coaching staff give DLo on how Mark Jackson took advantage of his advantages in the post.

Not "helping the helper" left Yi very exposed when he was helping on drivers

Mozgov is an option that hopefully others will use often because of effectiveness based on his size and agility. Worthy's description of Mosgov as the Lakers' version of Mr. Fundamental seems accurate

Yi is brought in as a shooter but setting up in the post?

AB needs to make an impact on games if he wants to stay on the team. If his offense is not going, he needs to be the "Bruce Bowen/Metta World Peace/Michael Cooper" of this team. Since there are other energy players waiting to play some serious D, it will be interesting to see who makes the squad.

Great job as always, DB. I was at the game, and watching Yi and Davis on that play, and I stood up and yelled my head off at the refs (as did everyone around me), as that was so obviously NOT a foul on Yi.

Russell had an off shooting game, but what bothers me even more is his consistent low assist numbers. People keep calling him a point guard, and here and there he makes some great passes, but he doesn't consistently create shots for others.

DLo makes great passes but is he making others on the court better - the top priority of a PG

Stark difference on how much more flowing the offense is being rubbed when Calderon and Huerstsas are playing. Understand the age and experience differences, but when Randle and Swaggy are getting more assists, the logic of separating JC and DLo makes more sense. :

How many times have DLo or JC been double teamed, as oppose to Swaggy. Opposing teams know DLo can get hot, but he hasn't yet shown the consistency or reputation as a bonafide consistent shooter
