Like clockwork, inning ending double play with the bases loaded.

Cubs went 0-13 with men on base. Dodger pitching with the shutout. McCarthy showed some nice life on his pitches. We all know that it's unlikely that he makes 30 starts, but he's capable when healthy.

Great pitching tonight. Good to see McCarthy go 6 shut out innings.

Stripling has looked really good in his outings. Maybe he's the new Joe Blanton. Does he have that rubber arm though?

Very concerned with Maeda. Once again he fails to even get through 6 innings; didn't even get into the 5th in this one. He's basically been a 5 inning pitcher since the middle of last season. He probably has the least life on his pitches of anyone we could start right now, including McCarthy or Wood or Ryu or Stripling or, of course, Urias.

I wouldn't be shocked if he isn't even in the rotation within a couple of months. Maybe they can put him on the DL with an "injury" for a month or something. He just doesn't have it.

OTOH Woods and Puig are looking really good. And the overall team depth with the way Hernandez played today gives room for optimism.

He's not a no.2 caliber of starting pitcher more of a 3 or 4. Would like to see this front office do something about getting a reliable no.2 starter whether through FA or trade; since they're so gung-ho about the A's, I wonder if they'll trade for this Cotton kid, he seems like a good prospect.

Outside of Kershaw who's a true ace, the Dodgers don't have anyone that's even close to a reliable number 2 that can stay healthy. Everyone else is just on the pitching carousel. The bright side, if you can really call it that right now, is that the farm system has a number of potential blue-chip prospects with high ceilings: Urias, Alvarez, Buehler, Sheffield, and White.

Hill is activated for his next start today, as I suspected. With the new 10-day DL, expect to see the FO use this to get Hill extra rest throughout the season as he'd only need to miss one start instead of the normal two in the past.

Hill could only go 3 innings because of blisters again. Looks like he could have chronic blister problems the rest of his career.

Gonzalez is starting to show his age. His offensive production is really bad for the first 13 games.

Maybe they outfoxed themselves. Maybe more rest was in order--it doesn't take that much real critical thinking to see that a guy with (a least) a recent problem of blistering, who was out for six weeks last year due to a blister, and who develops a blister after his first friggin' start, might need more than a one start rest.

Then again, maybe they slightly overpaid the guy. Maybe their sabermetric analysis of his history has a flaw or two--or more. Maybe his 3 victories and ~45 innings per year would suggest something less than spectacular. Maybe that one post-season victory (against one defeat) was not worth three solid pitching prospects.

Hill back to the 10-day.

At what point do we say he can't throw the innings we want and use him as an elite long-reliever with like 100 innings or so?

This is looking like a monumental mistake of a signing, I don't care how good his peripherals were last year.

Bellinger is absolutely mashing down in AAA:

.395/.465/.737 for a cool 1.202 OPS with 3HR

If AGon gets injured (especially with his down production), you have to think they give the kid a shot.

Peripherals tend to look great until you realize limited sample size. This is something this sabermoron FO forgot to consider because Hill has rarely if ever been healthy enough to give you a semi-full season. Hard to believe someone would ignore the age and injury history enough to give up what we did.

If you're suggesting that the front office got hosed on the Rich Hill deal... well, you're probably right. Like I stated in the past, if they really knew their stuff so well to find diamonds in the rough, and were truly trying to find the most bang for their buck, then they would not have made the moves that they made with regards to the signings and trades. If they had thought so highly of Hill, they could have had him for dirt cheap the year before instead of giving up 3 solid prospects. They could have gotten Cueto to replace Greinke with a contract that lines up with their payroll flexibility, even at the cost of a first rounder. Cueto and Hill signed last offseason would not only be cheaper than what they're paying now for the financial flotsam on their team, more talented than the Krapmir, Anderson, Hill contracts they ended up giving, but would have cost a lot less in actual talent. Ignoring those factors above, Cotton + Holmes + Montas > 1st rounder in my opinion. Their only saving grace so far is that it appears that their draft choices are doing well. So even after the last of White's top talents get promoted, there will still be some young guns down on the farm.
