Played the wrong position IMO. Luke put him in a position to fail at the gape 5 (see thread). He's been a 4 his whole life, and even Yi admitted that playing the 5 is a big adjustment to him. It's clear he's not a rim protector or rebounding presence at the NBA level (not many players are), although he's mobile enough to play decent help defense at the 4. I wish him the best wherever he goes.

He's too slow for an NBA 4 plus I think he would have still run into rebounding issues there. And then you add the depth we had at the 4 position and the 5 was the only real possibility for him.

Sad to see Yi go. It's true that he was most likely going to get "bottom of the barrel" minutes, behind our feature big men, but was hoping to have a big man with range on the team. Good luck to Yi, going forward.

Also, just cause Yi is leaving, the Lakers shouldn't fill roster spots, just because they're open. Metta, and Robinson, would serve no role on this team. Cutting both would make sense, while keeping Metta on as a staff member would be best, imo.

I trust Lakers saw him as a third string PF behind Randle and Nance. And evaluated him weather he'd survive at C. Although I never understood why would anyone need to test an obvious misfit. All in all, this position did not satisfy Yi, and that is quite understandable.
I only wish him luck elsewhere. He seems like a good teammate.

Yi's contract was pretty much the best thing about Yi. His on court play was pretty poor.

Our center rotation likely remains:

Moz/Black/Nance or Randle.

Hopefully by All-Star break, we get Zub a solid 8-10 mpg.

The way we structured Yi's deal was the best free agency signing all summer for us IMO.

I'm bummed about losing that contract.

That would have given us the ability to trade for a higher paid player. Now, we have much less to work with trade-wise.

But I could see why Yi would want out. If he was the 15th guy off the bench, he probably wouldn't have the opportunity to earn those incentives in his contract. He probably didn't like playing 5 either.

When was the last time the Lakers parlayed a significant expiring contract in a deadline deal?

We're in a different situation now.

I don't think it would have been a game-changing thing, but it would give us options to pick up a higher paid veteran.

"Jianlian We Hardly Knew Yi!"

I saw him in the Olympics and actually thought that he would make it.

I was pulling for him but it became obvious that he was struggling. Good luck to him.

After all these years of that prospect being so highly touted by all of us, I'm a bit numb to it and, frankly, glad he's moving onward.

Blame Tarik Black. He locked up that backup C spot real quick.

Now he's coming for Mozgov's job.

I guess he didn't like being considered a human TPE.

I wonder if he even understood the parameters of his contract when he signed. He hasn't played well and his only value would've been as a trade piece.

Problem is almost every team had cap space this summer so there isn't a desperate need to clear cap right now, making Yi worthless even as a trade piece.

TRob seems like a like-able guy both on and off the court, so I get why people want to sign him. I just think he's being a bit overrated around here. He'd be getting DNP-CD's for weeks at a time.

but, but the Laker's "Insider" told us Yi had locked up the backup C slot early in camp??? Now, less than a month later... he's out of the league? Oh... the humanity...

It looks like Yi Jianlian will be the Lakers' backup center. Looks good in practice, hitting 3s, potentially giving the team a stretch five.

It seemed like it came mostly from Yi. He saw that he would have a hard time getting major playing time, which would threaten his compensation package as well. Probably also saw that he would be traded post 12-15 to some Podunk team...then cut again.

Pride before taking that humiliating NBA fall.

Thought he had something in the bag but obviously not. Good luck Yi!

I'm telling you guys, Boston just had too many players under contract... Ben Bentil has way more potential at this point than Robinson and would fit better in our system. He may not pan out, but he is worth taking a chance on...

In the dleague? I agree.

He declined going to Boston's d league team, thats why they signed Kelly and released him to go play in the d league... From what I remember the Lakers were interested in Bentil at the draft as well...

I don't know much about him so I just watched a highlight video. His measurements and athleticism looks almost identical to Randle's, except he moves more fluidly than Randle does. He looks like a much better shooter. He shot 0.96PPP on catch and shoot.

Problem is Randle is a project who they invested a lottery pick to get, so they're going to put a lot of time and resources into developing him. Doesn't make much sense to add Bentil. Plus he came from Ghana at 15 so right off the bat you have to question whether he's really 21.

It was a calculated risk. It's money that's not going to hinder the Lakers from doing anything else.

If it makes you feel better, try to think about all the similar calculated risks that the Dodgers have taken the past few years. Mainly, a lot of money spent on a few players from Cuba that didn't pan out (Olivera, Arrueburrena).

Yi's guarantee is chump change.

Funny how life works.
We're envious of the 250 K.
Meanwhile, I'm sure Yi is mad. Since he's thinking about the 7.75 mill he didn't get.
