I've always wondered about the logic of showing prescription drug commercials on TV. Isn't a doctor's responsibility to know and research the right drug to prescribe a patient for a particular health condition? Why is it our responsibility to know about the different options and recommend them to our doctor?
If you stop airing these commercials you could seriously cut down costs, and therefore drive down the cost of prescription drugs.
Do they even show prescription drug commercials in countries that have universal health care? |
In Australia, advertising of prescription drugs to consumers is prohibited by law and is aggressively enforced.
It is also prohibited in Canada, but Big Pharma has had success in weakening various bits of interpretation of the law.
As a general rule, the advertisement of prescription drugs directly to consumers is prohibited in most countries. Australia & Canada are representative of both ends of the extremes, and most other countries fall between the two with Canada being the most permissive of countries with this restriction, and Australia being the least permissive. |
They advertise big time, both to prescriber and to direct consumer... because it works. Ethical? No |

In the US, of course they do, as there isn't a prohibition. But per Slavavov's question,in other countries with universal healthcare? The majority don't allow direct advertisement to consumers - only to Healthcare Professionals.
In Australia, these advertisements are governed by the Theraputic Goods Advertising Code
and in Canada they are regulated by Food & Drugs Act but even though technically prohibited, Big Pharma has had success in circumventing the legislation. _________________ I'm On point, On task, On message, and Off drugs.
