Unable to Close on the Road… The score was tied 65-65 heading into the fourth quarter on the road against the Jazz. This is the position the Lakers want to be in on road games instead of the carnage we saw last year against this Jazz team (they pretty much destroyed us in all but that final Kobe game).

With Brandon Ingram injured and the Lakers youngsters struggling from field, they scratched and clawed. This game was at the Jazz’s pace, but the Lakers weren’t going to go away easily.

They took a 4-point lead (which could have been 7 points but the officials wiped a three off the board after a review minutes later, saying Clarkson was out of bounds).

“They shot 40 freethrows which is a little ridiculous, but that’s kind of what happens when you play here in Utah,” Luke said. “I’m still a little confused about why they, 4 minutes later, took a three-point basket away from us. I guess I got to go look up the rule on that. They said he stepped out of bounds. If that’s the case they should just review the entire game all game long and anytime they miss something just keep coming back and taking stuff away. That just doesn’t make sense to me.”

Luke was ticked. They Lakers tried to battle through it all. The Jazz, unfortunately, turned the game around in the next 3 minutes after that stretch, going on an 11-0 run as the Lakers offense went dry. Still, they fought back and trimmed it to 2 again but could never push through, falling 96-89.

The Jazz did a good job of pressuring the passing lanes, clogging the paint and forcing the Lakers into shots late in the shotclock. That was more late-shotclock action than the Lakers have seen since the opening of preseason.

“You have to learn that when you’re in a road game and you have the opportunity to take it, you have to go take it,” Luke said.

Russell -- -- Poor shooting game (and ultimately just a few more buckets from Russell in this one and we win it). Despite that, he distributed the ball pretty well. Much better than the stats show. He had three passes in the first half that didn’t go as assists but set his bigman up for FTs on each of them. He also had a Clarkson three taken away after a nice baseline kickout. So the stats don’t really paint the picture of how much he switched gears for a long stretch of the game knowing his shooting wasn’t there. In regards to the shooting, he was just missing shots we see him make, even easy pull-ups at the elbow. Consistency will come in time. He did a good job off ball backdooring some of the overplaying. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-14 shooting (1-5 from three, 2-5 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 5 assists, 4 turnovers, 2 steals and 3 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a -17. The Action: He missed a pull-up three in transition. He was called for clearing out as he tried to probe with a defender on his hip. He kicked to Nick for the three. He attacked, took contact and missed but Mozgov cleaned up the penetration. He attacked and kicked to Randle for the three. He drew FTs on a drive, he made one. He got tapped on a short floater. He setup Mozgov for FTs on the break. He pushed out the break and drew FTs, he missed both. He missed a step-back three, not a good look as he wasn’t going up straight. Excellent bounce pass to Mozgov filling the lane for FTs. Nice no-looker from the sideline in transition to Deng on the break for the dunk. He got backdoored on D to give up a score on the other end. He attacked and threw it away on a kick to the corner. He lobbed to Mozgov to set him up for more FTs off the two-man game. He threw a bounce pass way trying to connect with Mozgov (go high with the pass to the big, not low). He airballed the pull-up in the lane getting some contact. Second Half: He was called for three seconds trying to set a screen. He missed a pull-up jumper off the screen (leaning forward more than usual). He attacked the paint and wanted the whistle on the miss. He made a tech FT. He probed baseline and kicked to Clarkson in the corner for the jumper (taken away later on review). He backdoored the overplay on the perimeter, Deng found him in the lane, Russell drew the D and bounced it to Randle for the slam. He kicked out to Williams for the three. He swished a three off a swing pass (first field goal of the game). He missed the elbow jumper getting his man into jail. He got tapped on a baseline leaner that crawled out. Excellent cut behind his man and Williams found him for the layup. He missed a three. He sank a step-back wing jumper. He drew a clear-out foul on his man with 47 seconds left down 4, big stop. He had an open three on the other end to cut it to 1 and it went in and out.

Randle -- -- We went to Randle at the C spot down the stretch to close the game. He had a mixed bag defensively at times (although certainly some excellent plays on that end like a rejection off the glass). We switched a lot and the Jazz really tried to test him in both the post and off the dribble. He held the line reasonably. It’s tricky with him because you’d like to be able to press an advantage on the offensive end, as well. Gobert was able to essentially stand in the middle of the lane, sagging off him (Randle did have a great drive past him on one sequence). If he can set killer screens out there on the perimeter, that would certainl force the defensive big up a little more (although Gobert can cover space well, but still that’s an advantage if bigs like Gobert and Chandler are just zoning up deep). And, of course, if he can become an effective shooter from distance…that will be the unanswered question for a while. He knocked down his only attempt from three in this one. Definitely want to see those rebounds numbers much higher. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-7 shooting (1-1 from three) to go with 4 boards, 1 assist, 2 turnovers, 2 blocks and 4 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He set Nick up for FTs off an early offense dribble handoff. He drained a wing three on the kickout from Russell. Quick-fire pass to Deng for the three. He missed a turnaround on iso. He picked up a tech for chucking a ball (he was trying to bounce it to the refs and it hit a Jazz player foot, kind of bogus). He couldn’t secure a defensive board and we gave up an And-1 dunk. He was called for charge trying to attack a small off the dribble. Second Half: He iso’d and missed the fade across the lane. He then gave up an offensive board on the other end. He missed a wing jumper up against the shotclock. Physical man D and he forced a turnover. HE missed a good look at a layup. He blocked a drive but couldn’t recover it. Not fast enough of a reaction on a switch and he gave up an jopen jumper. He took it out on the rim on the other end off the Russell feed. Iso D, he got caught in the air and gave up FTs. He switched on Hill, got beat off the dribble but recovered to reject him badly off the glass (that led to a Deng layup in transition). He took Gobert off the dribble, got his body into him and scored the lefty layup, nicely done.

Deng -- -- A lot of minutes again for Deng at the PF. Over time, we’ll press more of our advantage there and probably also get him into more sequences where he’s passing the ball as he makes some pretty good reads (much better than Mozgov, for sure). Deng finished the night with a double-double. He sank a couple of threes and also got out on the break for scores. I’m never thrilled when he’s creating a look for himself. Our offense should get better and put him in less of those positions. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-12 shooting (2-5 from three) to go with 12 boards, 1 turnover, 2 steals, 1 block and 2 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a -16. The Action: He scooped up a loose ball and took it the distance for a layup. He probed and missed the short pull-up jumper. He sank a three off the feed from Randle. He dropped to the level of the ball to knock a pass loose, then blocked a shot at the rim on the same stand. He was blocked after taking a baseline pass. He got stuck on his man’s hip, but stayed in his jersey and helped force a turnover. On the other end, Russell found him running the floor for the dunk. He missed a 55-footer at the buzzer. Second Half: Great read on the bounce pass to Russell who was overplayed and backdoored his man (it led to a Randle dunk). He missed a wing three. He missed a turnaround and wanted the foul. He was called for a charge across the lane. He scored a layup on the breakaway off the Randle block. He airballed a fading three with 5 seconds left.

Mozgov -- -- He was clearly ticked with the officiating like a few Lakers and took it out on a ref from the bench after he picked up his fifth foul early in the second half. Good job getting up and down the floor and our guards find him when he’s on the move. Russell had a bit more chemistry with him then we’ve seen. That’s slowly building but important. I also want Mozgov to get Russell in the habit of throwing a lob, something he’s not a natural at. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 1-4 shooting (6-7 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover, 1 steal, 2 blocks and 5 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -14. The Action: He was rejected on a layup. He put back in a Russell missed drive. He fumbled away a pass. He rejected a drive. He was fouled on what looked like a lob attempt that Huertas through in the hoop, so Mozgov made the And-1 FT off the Huertas bucket. He drew FTs getting ahead of the pack on the break, he made both. Good job getting down court again and Russell found him again for more FTs, he made both. He missed a tough turnaround out of a timeout and against the shotclock. He drew more FTs on a Russell lob pass this time, he made one. He swatted Gobert at the rim. Second Half: He iso’d and missed a jumphook, then took a bad foul trying to go over the back (his fifth with 9 minutes left in the third). He picked up a tech from the bench.

Young -- -- Better offensive game from Nick, although he went 0-4 in the second half. The Lakers offense really sputtered at times. He managed to get half his points on a couple of fouls from the three line. He was also pretty ticked at some of the calls, as well tonight. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 3-7 shooting (1-2 from three, 6-6 from the line) to go with 1 block and 5 fouls in 23:33. He was a -12. The Action: He hit an 18-footer off a dribble handoff for the Lakers first score. He was hit on a three off the early offense dribble handoff from Julius, he made all three FTs. He drained a deep three off the Russell kickout. He attacked the pressure and hit the pull-up in the lane. Great rotation on the weakside of a screen-roll to knock a pass away from the big and ignite a break. Second Half: Looked like he got a piece of a shot on from behind. He was rejected badly by Gobert on the other end. He missed a baseline pull-up jumper in early offense. He drew FTs on a wing three, he made all three. He missed a tough wing jumper. He missed a rushed three with game clock winding down.

Clarkson -- -- A pretty lackluster night from Clarkson, scoring just 4 points to go with 3 turnovers and no assists. He did have that crucial three taken away and certainly needs to make sure he’s inbounds when the kickouts come. Just an average game from JC and we take this one. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-9 shooting (0-3 from three) to go with 2 boards, 3 turnovers, 1 block and 2 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: Lost on D, he got screened and gave up a dunk. He sank a baseline pull-up jumper in early offense. He missed a baseline pull-up jumper. He attacked the paint and missed but black cleaned up the dribble penetration. He wasn’t inbounds on a cut to get a pass, turnover. Nice recovery after getting a little too upright on a close out and he blocked the shot. He missed a good look at a three at the end of the quarter. He missed a corner three. He traveled trying to attack a two-on-four he should have pulled out. Second Half: He missed an off-balance attempt in the lane. He airballed a pull-up three. Quick leak out and Williams hit him with the outlet for the dunk. He sank a corner jumper on the Russell kickout (they took away the three later saying he was on the out of bounds line, mental mistake by Clarkson). He missed a tough step-back wing jumper.

Ingram -- He felt a twinge in the knee in the first half, came back in the game later and looked mobile, but sat out the second half after still feeling it. He got a bit too upright on D, his man changed speed on him and that’s when he tweaked it from what I could tell. They really missed his impact. Ingram didn’t seemed too concerned about it, but I’m not sure I’ve seen him concerned about anything. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-2 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 1 foul in 4 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He pulled up off the Randle screen and knocked down the jumper from the top of the key. Too upright on D and his man got past him on a drive (Ingram asked to come out of the game after tweaking the knee). He missed an open wing three. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Williams -- -- Lou was one of the key bench players helping keep the team in it with other guys struggling. He led the team in assists and scoring, hitting three of his four attempts from beyond the arc. In a night where there was a lot of whistles, he someone didn’t sucker anyone into one of those reach fouls. Good to see our vets step up on the road while our youngsters had their issues. After a couple of finishes in the paint early on, he struggled to finish in there as the game went along. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 6-12 shooting (3-4 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 6 assists, 1 turnover, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He probed in early offense and hit the floater. He lulled the defender to sleep and Huertas threw it over the D to him for a layup on the slow cut in early offense. Second Half: He swished a pull-up wing jumper in early offense. He airballed a wild baseline attempt. He missed a runner. He swished the sideline three on a kickout. He missed a floater. He deflected a pass, then drew an illegal screen on the same defensive stand. He scooped up a bad past and instantly outlet to Clarkson busting out for the dunk. He drained a three from the left wing (not using all of the clock at the end of the quarter and we gave up FTs at the other end). Sloppy perimeter pass and it was taken for a score the other way. He made up for it with another three next time down when Russell found him. Tough step-through leaner from 16 feet out and he missed, but he regained possession fighting for the miss. Great bounce pass to Russell who backdoored his man for the layup. He recovered a bad pass then drew FTs on a drive, he made both. He was blocked on a drive. He missed a three.

Nance -- -- Both Randle and Nance knocked down threes in this game. Is that the first time that’s happened? Some overpassing by Nance again. You just want him to take the jumper or try to power up in the paint, but he’s often looking for that extra pass. It’s not a bad thing when things stagnate, but it’s a habit of his. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-4 shooting (1-2 from three, 0-1 from the line) to go with 3 boards and 2 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He reversed while getting fouled after Huertas found him with a baseline bounce pass, he missed the FT. Over passing when he should have powered up under the hoop. Second Half: Bad perimeter foul on a big to give up FTs. He airballed a lefty heave from three against the shotclock. He missed a tough turnaround against the clock. No hesitation and he drained the wing three.

Black -- -- Great job doing the garbage work on the offensive glass, turning misses into points. Good game from Tarik in very limited minutes. Almost a double-double. He also had some strong moments against Gobert on the defensive end. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 4-6 shooting to go with 7 boards (4 offensive) and 2 fouls in 10 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: Weak foul when his man was shooting a tough turnaround. He crashed the glass and cleaned up the dribble penetration with a tip in. He was blocked under the hoop, got it back and missed the next one. Second Half: He shut down a drive and forced a miss. He forced Gobert into a bad post up shot (should have been three seconds, too). Another Gobert brick. He took an inbounds with 1.9 seconds left, up-faked a man and hit the 15-footer to beat the shotclock. He scored a Williams airball, treating it like a lob. He crashed the glass, got the board, up-faked and scored the layup after the D bit.

Huertas -- -- They were making him the shooter and crowding those passing lanes. Loved seeing him run that same sequence with Lou that he has run with Clarkson where they lull the D to sleep and Huertas throws a pass over the top of the D for a layup. I wish Huertas was a bit more automatic on those runners. He had a lot of them tonight. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-6 shooting to go with 4 boards, 3 assists, 2 turnovers and no fouls in 15 minutes. He was a +13. The Action: He found Nance for and And-1 layup with a nice baseline bounce pass. Short on a runner. He missed a runner. He found Williams over the top of the D that fell asleep. He was picked at midcourt for a layup. He threw in what looked like a lob pass as Mozgov got fouled. Second Half: Wild runner across the lane against the clock and he missed. He was blocked on a runner, got it back and hit the next runner. He found Lou weakside for the three.

Robinson -- -- Brief stint for him as Luke scrambled his lineups when Ingram went out. Got to give Luke credit, Robinson didn’t look like he brought his A game and Luke quickly pulled the plug on that. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting and had 1 foul in 2 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He airballed a pull-up jumper by about a foot. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Walton -- -- The score was tied 18-18 when the first subs came in. Ingram, Nance and Clarkson for Young, Mozgov and Deng… Ingram tweaked his knee and came out… Black and Lou now in… Huertas in for Russell… Robinson in now for Black, score tied with a minute left… The Lakers trailed 28-27 after the first quarter… Deng in, then Mozgov, Lakers down 1… Ingram back in with 9:16 left, down 2… Mozgov, Deng, Ingram, Young, Russell down 2… Randle back in for Ingram, Lakers up 2… Clarkson in for Young… Some cheap whistles against the Lakers at the end of the half. Jazz on a 10-1 run… The Lakers trailed 48-43 at the half… Mozgov picked up his fifth foul after just 3 minutes, Luke sat him and then Mozgov picked up a tech from the bench. Lakers down 8. Lakers were in the penalty quickly… Luke shuffled the deck and went to the bench quickly. Black, Nance, Clarkson, Willams, Huertas unit… Offense losing its purpose and we’re up against the shotclock a lot… Tarik sitting for Randle, Lakers down 4 with 1 minute left… Good job chipping away at a once 11-point lead… “I was really proud of that second unit coming in,” Luke said. “We came out of that second half flat.” The score was tied 65-65 heading into the fourth quarter… He started Randle, Deng, Clarkson, Russell, Williams… Mozgov in for Randle, Lakers had a 3 taken away after a review a couple minutes later, saying Clarkson was out of bounds… They took a 4-point lead with 8 minutes left… An 11-0 run by the Jazz run and Luke called timeout… Randle back in for Mozgov, then Williams in for Clarkson… They could never get back over the hump again…

This is great.

Agreed about Deng, but definitely reassuring to see guys like him and Lou contributing when our young core was struggling.

Thanks DB.

Thanks DB as always. Appreciate the hard work especially since I couldn't watch. How come Nance only got 16 minutes? I would figure he would have gotten more, especially with Ingram getting hurt. I think Luke needs to find a way to get our pups at least 25 minutes a game no matter what.

Growing pains. Clarkson, Russell and Randle had bad games offensively and we still kept the game close.

I'm confident on our future

This was just an absolutely ugly game to watch from start to finish. Refs were bad on all sides and crowd was booing more than cheering. I felt a combination of stressed and bored the whole game

The officiating was really bad in this one. I guess it's something we're gonna have to start dealing with until our young guys build a better rapport with the refs on the road.

Next game is gonna be tough, OKC fans are loud as heck

They scrapped well enough from start to finish. Shots weren't falling. I'll take it. Effort was there.

Last year, we did 82-109 and 75-123 at Utah. We're improving.

Pretty cool that even though our two highest scorers had an off night we were still in it with a minute left against one of the toughest teams in the NBA.

Makes you wonder if we had won if Ingram was playing, if our theme is playing close games this year and a chance to win, I will take it.

I wanted to get this one. Badly. Playing without their best play (Utah), and I felt this was a great opportunity to get another early season victory on a short-handed Utah team.

Ugh. Next up OKC. Russell Westbrook is playing out of his mind already, too.

Agreed! Good to see them fight even when the shots weren't falling on the road. They are continuing to improve which is what this season is about (IMO).

Ingram would have made a huge difference. With him our we had JC playing SF.

Thanks DB. That was a rough game to watch, but they're going to happen throughout the year. There was solid effort, just couldn't get the ball in the basket. D'lo got good looks all night.

Ugly game. All those fouls on Mozgov broke whatever rhythm the team had. We still win this if Ingram plays, if they hit their free throws, and if Russell and Clarkson and Randle weren't ice cold. The Jazz without Haywood aren't any better than us.

I would've put in Zubac after Mozgov picked up his 4th. The lack of interior defense allowed Hill to make all those layups.

I thought the Jazz played very aggressive defense that seemed to really take the Lakers out of their game at times. Hopefully, we can grow from this and figure out how to deal with that type of defense better.

It was good to see the kids continue to fight though. Teams are really going to have to work hard to beat us. If we had one guy that could take over games in crunch time we'd be dangerous.

It will be fascinating to see how DLO, Randle, JC and Jr. will learn how to make an impact even though various aspects of their game are not working.

DLO is learning and is willing to take shots at the end of the game. Wondering when Luke will have DLO in the post to utilize his height advantage and allow him closer shots at the tim - though he was missing those too.

Randle's freakish athletic ability was on display when he block a shot at the end of the game. Waiting with great expectation when he will develop into at least a consistent average defender so that he can be utilized at the 5 during crunch times

JC's two rebounds and three TOs will not do. Hopefully he is taking lessons from MWP on how to make a definitive impact via his defensive pressure in his upcoming games

At times, I didn't even know that Jr. was in the game - strange.

Ingram was unfortunately feeling a twinge in the outside part of his knee but with Luke playing 9-10 players, there were opportunities for others to make their presence felt in the game.

Hopefully the kids will start to learn how to play and produce during crunch times.
