Work in Progress… Like anything in life, there are lessons in patience. This season will be full of lessons for the Lakers.

“Learning how to win, especially on the road, is a skill,” Luke said, mentioning the team needed to cut out the late-game turnovers and control the boards down the stretch. “We’ll get there.”

The Lakers fell back big in the second quarter as Luke ran a struggling Calderon/Williams/Young trio. The team clanked away from three while getting punched in the mouth on the other end and fell back. The Lakers lost the fastbreak 13-0 in the first half, neither getting stops in transition nor creating transition opportunities for themselves.

The pick and roll defense was exploited badly.

“They scored 60 something points in the paint on us,” Luke said. “The game plan going in was take away the paint, make them hit shots and we even live with three point shots, and we didn’t really follow the game plan.”

Despite all that, the Lakers had trimmed the lead to just 4 points in the fourth quarter with a 6-point trip down the court by Nick Young. Between the poor D on the pick and roll in the half court and the inability to slow the Thunder down in transition (26 points on the break), the Lakers couldn’t clamp down, falling 113-96.

It's a long road ahead and progress will take time.

Russell -- -- Russell was hitting his threes early, but he and Mozgov were getting killed on the screen-roll D. Russell was getting stuck on the screens and not even close to either man defensively. Luke switched Nick over on Westbrook later in the half and kept Russell off him for the rest of the game. Not a good shooting night with the 20 points on 20 shots. He did do a good job moving the ball. That chemistry with Mozgov was pretty clunky. Mozgov turned the ball over at least three times on passes to him on the screen-roll. Russell was a little frustrated with that third one. Some better chemistry with Randle as they had a few two-man sequences to free each other up. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 7-20 shooting (4-9 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 5 assists, 3 turnovers, 2 steals and 1 foul in 32 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: Nice setup to Randle for the layup off the two-man game (lots of space for Randle to work). He attacked and missed a runner. He sank a wing three a few seconds later. He sank another wing three off the kickout from Randle. He stripped a big to get a stop. He missed a drive. He sank a three off the high screen. He missed a rushed wing jumper. He drew a backcourt charge on Westbrook. He missed a wing three out of a timeout. He had 9 points on 3-7 shooting and 1 assist at the half. Second Half: He was blocked on a layup in transition. He hit Mozgov rolling for the dunk. He missed a chuck at three trying to beat the shotclock (wasn’t aware of the clock until the last second). He missed a quick-fire three. He sank a wing three coming off the screen for a catch and shoot. He missed a three. He missed a pull-up in the lane. He ball-faked and missed the wing jumper. He backed his man down and scored easily on the turnaround. He drew FTs in the post and made both. He pushed out the loose ball and scored the layup. He hit Randle in the lane for a layup. He and Nick trapped on an inbounds, Russell came up with the loose ball and hit Nick for the three. His bounce pass to Randle off the screen-roll hit a leg, dunk the other way. He missed a wing three. He worked a two-man sequence with Randle and sank a pull-up jumper. He got to the rim off a drive but missed the easy one.

Randle -- -- Luke was pleased with how they started the game. “I thought Julius was kind of the spark for that,” Luke said. I loved seeing Randle attacking quick off the touch in this game. He would get a step on the D with that and was hard to catch. Great start to the game from him, as mentioned. He had 14 points on 5-6 shooting and 3 assists in the first half. He had defenders on the heels in both the halfcourt and in transition. He missed the double-double by one board, but a very efficient 20 points tonight. When he can get to the rim with some space, it’s usually a good thing, but he also had a couple tought scores through crowds tonight. Sabonis had no chance against him and quickly got into foul trouble. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 7-10 shooting (0-1 from three, 6-9 from the line) to go with 9 boards, 3 assists, 2 turnovers, 3 steals and 4 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: He spun through a double team trying to iso, threw up an And-1 prayer and it was answered as he fell to the ground, he made the FT. He scored a layup off the screen-roll with Russell. He attacked past his man to his left and scored the And-1 over the double team, he made the FT (second foul on Sabonis in 3 minutes). He drew the D and kicked to Russell for a three. He missed a good look on a turnaround. Quick attack off the catch, turning into the lane and scoring over a big. Quick attack off the touch in the corner to score the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He pushed out the board and hit Nick for the open three. He was fouled on a perimeter reach, he made one FT. Second Half: He slapped down a pass on a rotation, pushed it out with speed and drew FTs, he made both. He missed in a crowd, but kept it alive. He should have lobbed on the break but his pass was picked off instead. He fell asleep on the weakside and gave up a lob dunk. He swiped a pass in transition D. Sloppy pass in transition, turnover. He missed a three trailing the break. He scored a layup off the bounce pass. He drew more FTs, missed both. He attacked the paint, spun and banked in the jumphook.

Deng -- -- His first scoreless game since 2005 Brez said afterward. He did not look good this game. Just too little impact ball from him. You expect steady play, but you also want him to bring some impact on either end. It was just mostly invisible ball, even some breakdowns where he made some mental mistakes you don’t want to see from your vet. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-3 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 2 boards, 3 assists, 1 turnover, 1 steal, 1 block and 1 foul in 22 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: Way short on a wing three. Great extra feed to Mozgov for the dunk under the hoop. He lost the handle on a drive. He rejected Westbrook from behind. He attacked the paint and missed a runner. He had 3 assists in the half. Second Half: Bad angle and he gave up a dunk. He fumbled a pass away on the perimeter (hit him in the hands) for points the other way. He missed a wide open three next time down.

Mozgov -- -- Those hands in this game. He fumbled a couple of passes away on the screen-roll and traveled off another (Russell was starting to get frustrated late in the game). You don’t want to see that many turnovers from a big who isn’t dominating the ball. Defensively, he got caught in no man’s land a bit trying to defend the two-man game. Some very good challenges at the rim. Also, good work on the offensive boards keeping possessions alive with tap outs. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 4-5 shooting to go with 5 boards (3 offensive) to go with 1 assist, 3 turnovers, 1 block and 1 foul in 24 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He kept an offensive board alive and Russell hit a three off it. Great help D using his verticality to deny a layup. He dunked off the Russel/Deng passing sequence. He fumbled away a bounce pass. He rejected penetration at the rim. He denied a lob pass. He finished the hook on an interior pass from Nick. Second Half: He fumbled away another pass off the screen-roll, right in his hands. He spotted Nick open under the hoop for a layup. He tried to finesse in a layup on the break and wasn’t close. He dunked off the feed from Russell on the screen-roll. He traveled off the screen-roll. He sank a wing jumper.

Young -- -- He struggled to knock down his shot early on, missing his first four attempts from three. He warmed up after that. He had a key 6-point sequence in the fourth that got the Lakers to 4 points. He took the Westbrook assignment after Russell was having issues with the screens. “One man fastbreak,” Nick said. Westbrook was literally turning him in circles. “We stayed with it to the end,” Nick said. “Tried to pick up the intensity a little bit, just made a couple of mistakes down the stretch and they built off it.” The Stats: He scored 16 points on 4-11 shooting (3-10 from three, 5-5 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 2 turnover, 2 steals and 5 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a -16. The Action: He missed a wing three. He missed a sideline three. Not close on a sideline three off a kickout. Not close on another open three in the corner. He finally sank a wide open corner three on a swing pass. He sank an open wing three in transition when Randle found him open. He missed an open three in transition. Second Half: He missed a three straight away, Mozgov found him a few seconds later under the hoop for a layup. Quick first step past Sabonis and he was fouled, he made both FTs. Good battle in the paint on the glass to draw a foul and get the stop. He was called for a double dribble. He knocked a ball loose to ignite a break. He up-faked a defender and drew three FTs, he made all three…then trapped with Russell on the inbounds, they stole it and Nick drained the wing three. He was called for a charge trying to attack off the three line. He missed an open three.

Clarkson -- -- A choppy first half, but he finished with 8 points on 4-8 shooting in 12 minutes. He fell off in the second half. Too many turnovers. He had some especially bad reads on lob passes that weren’t there. As a team we had 21 turnovers on our 20 assists. Clarkson missed all of the threes he attempted. When we miss long shots and cough the ball up, our transition D needs to be on top of its game. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 6-14 shooting (0-3 from three) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 4 turnovers, 3 steals and 2 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He crossed over and missed the wing jumper. He came off a screen, took a pass in the lane, attacked and scored the layup. Wild attack picking up his dribble and he missed the chuck at the rim (he wanted a foul, but I think they didn’t give it to him because he looked OC). He swiped a pass on a 3-on-1 break. He sank a baseline jumper off the inbounds. He cut to the front of the hoop and Lou found him for the layup. He attacked off the high screen-roll and hit the short runner. He missed a drive off an inside-out dribble. He fumbled away a dribble on the probe to his left. He missed a wing three. Second Half: He was blocked on the break, got back inbounds, recovered the ball and scored. He probed the lane and hit a floater. Ill-advised lob into a crowd and it was knocked away. Poor job not walling his man off in transition at the end of the quarter and it led to a layup in the final second. Another lob pass knocked away. He was rejected on a layup, got it back and missed a three trying to beat the shotclock. He fed Nance on a drive and dish for a dunk. He missed an open sideline three. He slithered through the D off the dribble and missed the layup. He attacked the paint and threw it away for points the other way.

Williams -- -- We could have used some better perimeter shooting from the bench. Lou shot blanks along with the rest of the bench as they went for a combined 0-10 from three. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 2-7 shooting (0-2 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 1 board, 2 assists, 2 turnovers, 1 steal and 1 foul in 19:36. He was a -6. The Action: Early offense attack trying to draw a foul and he flipped in the runner. He missed a three off a high screen. He found Clarkson open under the hoop for a layup. He drew a whistle on a bump and earned FTs, he made one. He missed a wide open three. Second Half: Great job changing hands with the ball after splitting defenders in transition to score. Clock down to a few seconds, he got the ball, attacked and drew FTs out of nothing, he made both. He missed a jumper. He missed a forced floater. Horrible outlet pass after getting a loose ball, easily picked off.

Ingram -- -- He looked like himself out there coming off the pain from last game. I really didn’t notice anything slowing him down. He’ll probably have to deal with some tendinitis this season as he’s playing a lot more games. He got caught in some tough shots attempts and couldn’t finish any of this threes. But he still managed 9 points, a great follow tip of one of his misses, showing that length. He also had a pull-up jumper from the top of the key going to his left. I think we’ll see a lot of both of those over the years. His length and mobility are a huge asset. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-10 shooting (0-3 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 1 turnover, 1 steal and 1 foul in 21 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He missed an open wing three. He tried a transition lob to Metta, who never left the ground, lol. He missed a turnaround in the post. He hit a fade cutting weak to strong to take the pass. He backed his man down and missed the turnaround. Second Half: He attacked off the dribble and missed a tough runner. He missed an open three. He missed another tough runner, but follow tipped it in with that length. He drew FTs on a drive left, he made both. He attacked to his left and swished a pull-up 18-footer. Not close on a wing three. He drew FTs on the perimeter, he made one.

Nance -- -- Not thrilled with this one from Nance. He’s going through one of those low-energy funks again it seems. He’s got to impose his athleticism and injury on the game. Luke didn’t seem happy with what he saw out there and limited his minutes. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-2 shooting to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 1 steal in 12 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He missed a floater instead of trying to finish strong. He got worked in the post by Kanter for a layup. He stripped Kanter in the post. He attacked and lost the ball on a drive. Second Half: He dunked off a drive and dish. Wow, weak tag on the roll man to give up a score (he was there, just gave him a pat and let him get to the front of the rim).

Black -- -- Some good boxouts on the glass. Usually our second unit has been outplaying opponents. That wasn’t the case in this one. Tarik was the only bench player with a positive in the +/-. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-2 shooting to go with 4 boards, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 11 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He missed a forced attempt in the paint after struggling to control a tough pass. Second Half: His dribble handoff was knocked away. He grabbed an offensive board and powered it back in.

Calderon -- -- He got the backup PG minutes briefly in the first half. The team was a -12 in the 4 minutes he was on the floor. I feel like we didn’t run that Williams/Calderon backcourt in the preseason, but I could be wrong. It didn’t look good. The team not making shots didn’t help, but they weren’t stopping anyone. It looked like a butt kicking waiting to happen. Luke did not bring him back in the second half. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 from three to go with 1 turnover in 4 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: He threw aa pass away. He missed a wide open three. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

World Peace -- -- Luke went to Metta for some PF in the first quarter. That went about as expected, but we held the line. Luke’s hoping that he ignites the defensive energy. Nick mentioned that Metta has been keeping him focused on the defensive end of the floor. Non Play of the Game: Ingram tried to lob to Metta on the break and Metta never left the ground, ball sailing out of bounds. Dude is twice the age of Ingram, he’s not jumping. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 1 steal in 3:43. He was a -1. The Action: He missed a three on a pick and pop. He missed a layup on a dive. He knocked a pass away. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Walton -- -- Lakers pulled out to a 16-8 lead off Russel and Randle. That forced a timeout… The Thunder went on an 8-0 run to tie it up… Clarkson in for Young… Ingram in for Mozgov, Nance in for Randle, who was on fire… Luke called a timeout, down 20-18 with 4 minutes left… Down 4, Metta and Williams in for Russell and Deng. So Nance, Metta, Ingram, Lou, Clarkson… Down 30-22, he called another timeout. Nance not handling Kanter well and Lakers not taking advantage of him on the other end… Lakers trailed 30-24 after the first quarter… Black in for Metta to start… Calderon in a couple minutes later for Ingram… After catching the Thunder, the Lakers fell back by 7 again… Mozgov, Randle, Young, Williams, Calderon at the 7:42 mark… The lead ballooning against this lineup. The Lakers trailed 47-32 when the timeout came… The starters all returned and they helped push the Lakers to a 10-0 run and cut the lead to 5, forcing a Thunder timeout… Clarkson in for Deng, sliding Young to the SF, lead climbing… The Lakers trailed 58-46 at the half. The Thunder shot 49% in the half. Lakers lost the fastbreak 13-0… Ingram in down 11 for Deng, who was playing horrible… Down 12, he went back with a Black, Deng, Ingram, Williams, Clarkson lineup. They cut the lead to 6… The Lakers trailed 77-71 heading into the fourth… The Lakers trailed by 8 when Nance, Young and Russell came in for Deng, Williams and Ingram… The Lakers were called for their third illegal D of the night… Randle back in for Black with 8:17 left down 11… Nick with a huge sequence, drawing three FTs, then he and Russell trapped on the inbounds, stole it and Nick quickly hit another three. They trailed by 4… The Thunder rallied back and the game was quickly over…

I thought it was a decent move switching swaggy on to Rusty. Thanks DB.

Some mad scientist lineups by Luke tonight. Lot of open shots, which is great. Lot of missed open shots, which is frustrating as hell. On to the next one!

Thanks DB.

This is what young guys learning the NBA game looks like.

It's been so long since we had a young Lakers team like this that it's fun to watch these guys go through their ups and downs, although it's definitely frustrating at times.

They need to pay their NBA dues sometime. Now is as good a time as any.

Luke said he's trying to get everyone burn in first half but our starters still need to get used to each other. Otherwise love this team

Thanks DB, I love the effort this team plays with, what we are lacking right now is mental toughness and someone who can take over games.

I had no problem with the play of any of the young bucks tonight. Russell hasn't shot the ball well over the past couple, but really between him, Randle, Jc and Ingram you do see a lot of good decisions and a lot of development. What really bothers me in games like this are the vets

Deng - 0-fer?
Mosgov - Catch those passes and coach dlo on the pick and roll D
lou - what are you doing?
Metta - nice layup

deng lou and metta will cost us a lot of wins this season if they don't get their minutes adjusted down.

Thanks DB - rough game. We missed an awful lot of wide open looks, which makes it more frustrating. Defending the P&R and helping the helper would have been nice. Almost looks like they figured out how to anticipate and defend it, with a minute or two left in the game. I don't think we stay this cold shooting and I expect the Lakers will learn plenty from this game.

I saw a lot of good things out there. OKC closed late making it look worse than it was. Youngsters will remember these road lessons. We want the wins but this is exactly how I anticipated the year going. They have definitely been competitive and not the clueless trainwreck they were last year and that is all I ask from this team. Go Lakers!

As I said in the game thread, I missed the game today dealing with having my car towed. This loss was just salt on the wounds.

I have to say, based on the 1st two games' eye test as well as his box score on this one, I'm not too thrilled with Deng's play. Only three games in, but man he needs to elevate his game if he's going to be worth that contract...

P&R Lesson 101 was taught tonight at NBN University

Since this weakness has been exposed, other teams will be offering this same lesson again and Again and AGAIN till they learn how to defend this action.

Who would have thought that Swaggy would replace one of the young bucks for D - lmao!

How long will it take for the young ones to learn that they need to help the helper while "cracking back" during the P&R action (Hello Julius)

Fascinating to monitor the growth curve of the youngsters in learning the concept of winning team defense (only way to slightly slow down or limit to some degree players such as Westbrook - http://basketballsocietyonline.com/how-to-defend-russell-westbrook).

With limited options having been taught to the youngsters, they don't know the counters while being defended by defensive-minded teams. Pacers, Cavs, Spurs, Raptors and others will play more tenacious Team D than OKC beach
Mosgov does not have bad "Kwame" hands. Talking to Huertsas and Caledron can help DLO in how to effectively get Mosgov the ball

It will be interesting to see which player(s) will develop into a consistent closer. At this time, there are many youthful wannabes that are talented but still have definitive holes in their respective games while needing to embrace the "Metta Attitude!" (so says Swaggy)

Wassup with Jr.?

Which Lakers demand a double-team at this time??????

Walton really needs to improve on some things

He takes players out at inopportune times and doesn't react to bad matchups. We had not a single player who could guard kanter for the entire time he was in! Only mozgov can guard him, maybe robinson. stuff like this.

However some things he does I think are really good, like having Ingram play "point guard" with the second unit.

The League Pass promo lasts until tomorrow, so you can catch a replay of the game for free until then. Not that you need to go out of your way to watch this game in full.

Ah man, that sucks. Had that experience way too often (AAA wassup).

Deng does a lot of other things but sure, he's not putting up the raw stats. I still think he's getting used to...frankly, playing on a bad team. That Miami/Chicago squads he was on were full of vet players (and that brief stay in Clev. was horrible too).

Save the excuses for someone that's not the team's highest paid player yinoma

Deng trying to create for himself makes me cringe. He's been Anthony brown out there.

A few things:
-our defense is horrible in covering pick and roll
-I would love more rim attacking . more plays towards the hoop
-I enjoy watching this new team, but it also reminds me how were delayed in our rebuild. This could have been year 2 or three of the rebuild....

Ive started to notice that the losses are beginning to have that sting again. The last few years ive felt like a zombie. Tuned out all the suckage. I just didn't care
