First Road Win… It looked like just another turnover-prone, foul-prone first half. The Lakers doing what losing teams (and young teams) do -- playing sloppy with a lack of fundamentals at times and poor decisions at others.

This team, however, has also shown a lot of fight, staying in games on the road and never getting steamrolled like last season.

They battled back in the third quarter and drew even until a 5-point trip down the floor for the Hawks. A 39-point third by the Lakers kept them right on the doorstep once again heading into the fourth. Lou Williams came up with a series of 3-point plays early in the fourth and the Lakers had the lead. Williams would drop 16 of his 18 in that quarter.

They held on down the stretch with a big defensive rejection by Randle and a dagger three from Young. D’Angelo Russell contributed with the stat line of the night, leading the team in scoring (23), assists (8 and blocks (3). Everyone contributed something in the 123-116 road win over the Hawks.

“I think it’s just the growth of the team,” Luke said of the Lakers taking the W from the Hawks on the second night of the back-to-back.

Russell -- -- Big numbers across the board from Russell. “That’s the way we see him playing the point guard position,” Luke said. “He was in control of the game and it wasn’t just from scoring. It was the plays he was calling. He was getting people touches. He had the defense guessing where he was going.” More people probably need to step back and look at all the things Russell does. Realize just how young he is doing this. Post ups, threes, pull-ups, floaters, drives, etc., while dictating the offense and looking better at finding teammates. It’s not going to be consistent because of his youth. He had some careless, sloppy passes in this game, some are just not fundamentally sound decisions or execution. Let him make his mistakes. There will be plenty as he grows. But eventually, he’s going to consistently give teams fits. Just wait till he’s a vet. (I’ve got to say he does know how to draw a whistle like a vet sometimes.) Defensively, he did a good job recovering to his man for shotblocks tonight. He stayed with it and used his length well. The Stats: He scored 23 points on 9-19 shooting (1-3 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 8 assists, 1 steal, 3 blocks, 4 turnovers and 1 foul in 31 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: Sloppy post entry pass (one handed), turnover. He reversed directions on a pivot and scored the 10-footer that Dwight goaltended. He missed a 20-footer up against the shotclock. He lost his man on an up-fake, moved in and hit the 17-footer. Quick advance up court to Nick on the break for FTs. Way short on a pull-up but he got it back and found Deng for FTs. He missed a turnaround in the post. He got his man on his hip, probed the lane, hung and swished the 5-foot And-1, he made the FT. He swatted his man out of bounds. He pushed out the steal after jumping the passing lane and threw down the And-1 dunk, he made the FT. He curled to his left into the lane and hit the runner. He missed a wing three. He threw a pass in Ingram’s shins, turnover. He scored 12 points on 5-10 shooting. Second Half: Slow moving cross-court pass that was picked off and Luke called a timeout 29 seconds into the half. He missed a turnaround in the post. He swiped a kickout to ignite the break. He sank a pull-up wing jumper off the screen. Brilliant change of speed cut off Randle in the post, he took the bounce pass and scored the layup. He missed a pull-up from the top of the key after moving in off the three line. He blocked his man from behind. He sank a corner three on the catch and shoot. He missed the short one in the lane, got it back and was hit in the face. Quick attack to his left and he flailed like a vet to get the FTs, he made both. He got tapped on a turnaround at the elbow with the shotlock going down. He drained a big wing jumper with the shotclock about to expire. He missed a drive down the middle of the lane. He kicked out to Nick for the three with 17.9. He went full court to Nance with 9 seconds left on an inbounds for a dunk.

Randle -- -- I’ve said it a number of times, but when you go small with Randle, you want him to switch on D and use his athleticism against smaller guards. You don’t want him anchoring or plugging the lane to try to block shots. You want him tracking guards and surprising them with his speed and size. He came up with the defensive play of the night on a track down and rejection at the rim of a guard on a switch. Lengthy backcourt players and speedy front court can cause a lot of problems. “We were a little undersized without Mozgov but our guys showed a lot of heart by fighting there,” Luke said of his bigs. Offensively, Randle actually did some scoring with the jumper in this one. Very good to see. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-7 shooting (0-1 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a +10. The Action: He missed a deep three. He sank the pull-up at the FT line working with Ingram. He faced up in the midpost and hit the 16-footer from the left wing. He missed a 15-footer. He snatched a ball out of the hands of a player on the floor, pushed it out, got caught in the air for no reason and threw it away. Second Half: He missed a jumphook. He was fouled on the offensive glass putback attempt for FTs, he made one but got it back. Low position sealing his man well and he drew FTs in the post, he made both. He missed a wing jumper. Great read on Russell’s quick cut and Randle bounced it to him in the lane for the layup (just excellent chemistry here). Nice backdoor feed to Deng who was hammered on the layup. He scored a layup off the drive and dish from Lou. He switched onto the guard, tracked him on the drive and swatted the shot at the rim, defensive play of the game (that’s why you switch with Randle).

Zubac -- -- “He didn’t look nervous. He looked like he was excited to be out there,” Luke said. He got the start with Mozgov TKO’d from last night’s battle. A lot of schooling for Zubac tonight. Even if you read the scouting reports and have a grasp on what needs to be done, it’s a whole different thing when you’re out there. Only way to really learn is to get time on the floor sometimes. Going up against an athletic Dwight was tough for him just mentally trying to do the right thing. He still managed to scratch out 6 points despite having some foul troubles. Nick pointed out that Zubac is 1-0 as a starter. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-3 shooting to go with 3 boards, 1 steal and 4 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a +10. The Action: He gave up a dunk on the first possession. He hit the jumphook on our next possession for the Lakers first score. He took an interior feed and scored the layup on the next trip down. He picked up his second foul biting on an up-fake two minutes in. He picked up his third foul when Dwight got deep position (he sat for Black at 6:32). He got backdoored for an alley oop. His fourth foul of the half and he had to sit. Second Half: He missed a jumphook to beat the shotclock. He got the bucket on a putback dunk attempt that the refs called interference for. He stepped in front of Dwight and swiped the pass. He fronted and gave up a layup (looked like Dwight got away with a shove).

Deng -- -- This is the Deng they’d like to see with consistency. Doing the little things, scratching out scores within the flow of the offense. Some different rotations with Deng in this one, running a good stretch at PF with the bench. The Lakers played well with those lineups. He missed some short ones midway through the fourth quarter, but also had some strong defensive plays. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 4-11 shooting (1-1 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 10 boards (3 offensive), 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 26 minutes. He was a +12. The Action: His offensive board led to a Zubac layup. He swished a wing pull-up working off the screen. Randle couldn’t handle his pass in the paint (hard to tell whose fault that one was). He drew FTs on the interior feed from Russell, he made both (his first FTs of the season). He missed a floater, but cleaned up Black’s putback attempt. He missed a pull-up 18-footer. Second Half: He swished a jumper from the right side when Randle found him off a missed FT. He swished a sideline three in transition. He missed a wing jumper with a man on. Great outlet by Deng off the board to Young for the breakaway dunk. He swatted a layup from behind to get a stop. He cut backdoor, took the pass and was fouled on the layup attempt, he made both FTs. He missed a pull-up from the top of the key. Nice help D rotation to deny a layup. He missed a runner and a follow attempt. He missed a three-footer in the paint.

Young -- -- He had a good stretch in the second half hitting on a couple of threes, a jumper and scoring at the rim twice. Late in the game, he drilled got a key stop fighting through an illegal screen and then came up with the dagger three down the stretch. Getting it done on both ends. Credit to Nick for bringing his A game this year and Luke for getting him playing like this. Keep it up all year. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 6-11 shooting (3-7 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 26 minutes. He was a +10. The Action: He missed a three. We got it back and he hit Zubac for the layup. He drew FTs when Russell hit him on the leak out, he made both. He missed an open wing three. He iso’d and threw it away early in the shotclock. He missed a wing three on a kickout. Second Half: Short on a 7-foot pull-up. He sank a wing three in transition. He got a nice bounce on a wing jumper next time down. He got tapped on a sideline three. He sank a corner three of the Russell feed. He dunked on the breakaway when Deng outlet to him leaking out off a defensive board. He cut across the lane, took the pass and scored the layup. He drew an illegal screen on Howard to get a stop with 1:30 left. Huge dagger three with 17.9 to give the Lakers the 7-point lead.

Williams -- -- He had three 3-point plays early in the fourth quarter (a reach foul on a three, a regular three, and an And-1 fade) that got the Lakers the lead. Just a huge sequence to start the fourth quarter. That more than balanced out a string of bad plays in the first half. He killed the Hawks in that fourth quarter adding another huge three, floaters, drives to set up teammates and bail out shots. He scored 16 points in the fourth. Luke mentioned afterward how the good teams can take you out of your offense. You need a guy who can deal with that. Lou definitely stepped up, taking it to his old team. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 6-11 shooting (2-5 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 4 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: Quick attack in early offense off a hesitation move and he scored the layup. He airballed a three straight away. Not close on a fading wing jumper. He got tapped on a wing three. He got crossed over badly by Thabo and gave up a layup (that should never happen). He was then picked on the other end. He missed a runner a few seconds later. Bad sequence. Second Half: He suckered a man into a reach foul on a three, he made all three FTs. He drained an open three on the cross-court pass after Nance leveled his man with a great screen. He probed in early offense, found contact and hit the And-1 fallaway, he made the FT. He knocked away a perimeter pass to ignite a break. He missed a wing three on a kickout. Nice help D to steal the ball with a reach on a Hawks drive. He dribbled around the D and hit the short baseline floater. He sank a floater coming off a wing screen. He collapsed the D on a drive and dumped it to Randle for the layup. Lou in trouble with the clock going down and at mid court, he worked his way toward the three line and swished the long one at the buzzer. Sweet feed to a rolling Nance next time down for the dunk.

Clarkson -- -- He had a strong first half, leading the Lakers in scoring and getting hot in the second quarter. He was imposing himself on the game…finishes in the paint with athleticism and hitting jumpers. Luke probably could have run him more minutes during that stretch. The Lakers left Calderon and Huertas on the bench in this game. I think they probably need to do that more often to get more time for JC and Lou on the floor. Defensively, we had some issues with Hardaway, but worked hard. Good effort from everyone tonight from start to finish. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 7-12 shooting (1-3 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 4 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a-5. The Action: He missed a wide open three on a Russell post kickout. He missed a 22-footer off the weave (would have rather seen him step back for the three). He worked off the screen to his left and lobbed back to his right to Nance for the score. He backed a man down in transition and scored the layup off the dropstep. He probed down the lane under control, hung and banked for the score. Not close on a turnaround on iso. He probed, fumbled it, recovered and hit a hanging turnaround from a couple feet away. His pass to Nance in the lane was picked off. He got a nice bounce on an 18-footer. He jumped a passing lane and took the steal the distance for a layup. He sank a long pull-up working off the Zubac screen. He hit a pull-up three in transition. He had 15 points on 7-10 shooting. Second Half: He missed a wing three. Bad foul on Hardaway shooting a three (then we gave up a three off that for a 5-point sequence to Hardaway). He rattled in a wing jumper. He gave up a layup to Hardaway trying to deny the three. He scooped up the loose ball, pushed it down court and missed the layup, but Nance cleaned it up. He faked like he was waiting for a screen, blew past his man and drew FTs at the rim, he made one. He threw a pass away to Nance that probably should have been a lob. He tried to dribble through a crowd, turned it over for a layup the other way, uggh.

Ingram -- -- His first and only points in this game came on a three to give the team the lead in the fourth. Quiet game offensively from him, but I thought he was very good on D at times. Some excellent help rotations and also using his length to disrupt shots on the perimeter. His offense will likely get better as the team’s execution gets better. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-2 shooting (1-1 from three) to go with 2 boards, 2 assists, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He was stripped and fouled Dwight for FTs the other way. He hit Randle off the two-man game for the 15-footer. He threw an inbounds away, three the other way. He airballed a pull-up 17-footer. He blocked a shot out of bounds from behind on the other end. Second Half: He drained a three on the secondary break. Great help D rotation to bother a shot at the rim and help Lou on a mismatch. Nice challenge on Korver to force a miss.

Nance -- -- He said he’s pleased with how he’s been able to change the pace of the game and cause problems defensively. “The fourth quarter the last couple of games, we kind of been letting the other dictate the pace and let them be more aggressive than we were. Tonight, we kind of changed that,” Nance said. Vet like game from Nance out there. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 7-9 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 7 boards, 1 assist, 2 steals, 1 block, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 26 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He blocked Bazemore’s drive on a switch. He sank an 18-footer on the pick and pop. He worked the two-man game with Clarkson and finished the lob. He choked a layup he should have dunked. He swiped a kickout and saved it. Second Half: He took a pass in the paint on the roll down the lane, palmed it, hung off the contact and finished. He and Ingram left a man under the hoop for an easy putback. He leveled a man on a weakside screen to free up Lou for the three. Clarkson missed a layup on the break but Nance was there for the putback score. He missed a three with 4 minutes left. He snatched the ball away from a driving Hawk. He took the bounce pass from Lou and slammed. He charged instead of taking the FT jumper on the screen-roll. He dunked on an inbounds leak out with 9 seconds left.

Black -- -- Zubac, Black, Randle and Nance all shared time at the C spot tonight. Black got thrown in the mix early with Zubac getting foul trouble. Some good moments disrupting shots in the paint, but not much impact overall as he was a bit foul prone. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-4 shooting to go with 3 boards, 1 block and 5 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: He up-faked Dwight, attacked left down the lane and scored the lefty layup. He rejected a drive out of bounds. He roofed a man to ignite a breakaway score. He battled for an offensive board, missed the putback but Deng cleaned it up. Second Half: Nice footwork in the post to score a layup around his man.

Walton -- -- He started Zubac, who picked up three fouls on Dwight and had to sit midway through the quarter for Black… Ingram in Deng, Clarkson in for Young tied 14-14 midway through the quarter… Down 1, Lou and Larry in for Randle and Russell… Hardaway lighting it up from three (sinking four in five attempts) and the Lakers trailed 37-28 after the first… Foul prone start to both quarters… Zubac in for Black, Lakers down 8… Young, Russell, Randle in for Nance, Williams and Ingram, down 8… Out of a timeout we throw an inbounds away and the Hawks took it for an uncontested dunk. That’s what losing teams do… Zubac with his fourth foul and had to sit a couple minutes after entering, Lakers down 9… Deng in for Clarkson, who was rolling… They scrapped and cut it to 3, but were outscored again to close the quarter… The Lakers trailed 60-51 at the half. Another 10 turnovers in the half for the Lakers… Luke with a quick timeout 29 seconds into the half after a bad turnover by Russell… They battled back and trimmed it down to 2 again… Nance, Clarkson and Black in for Randle, Young and Zubac, Lakers down 2 with 3:21 left in the third… They tied it up shortly later, their scoring coming alive this quarter… Young in for Deng… They were even with the Hawks until JC fouled a three shooter, who made two, missed one, got the rebound and hit a three. A 5-point trip down the floor… Lou in for Nick in the final minute… Zubac in for a possession… The Lakers trailed 94-90 heading into the fourth… Luke went with a Nance, Deng, Ingram, Clarkson, Williams lineup… They took a 4-point lead on a 12-4 run (three 3-point plays by Lou and one by Ingram)… Lakers up 5, the Hawks went back to their starters… Some subs a couple minutes later for Luke up 2. He went with the Nance, Randle, Clarkson, Russell, Williams unit… He went to Young for Clarkson… Luke thought at some point they could get a weakside three if they hit a roll man, so he went with Nick. Nick came up with the dagger three down the stretch…

In both of our two wins - Houston and Atlanta - you saw more Clarkson/Williams, less Huertas/Calderon. I don't think that's a coincidence. Clarkson is at his best with the ball in his hands running the offense. He is also a vastly superior defender to those two. If you have him coming off the bench, let Clarkson be that back up PG.

Nice win especially on the back end of a B2B! 2 wins in 5 games is a 33 win pace and 4 of those games on the road. Health is paramount and if they stay healthy, they could conceivably grow closer to .500. It's what I envision with the play I'm witnessing out there.

THIS!

Thanks DB! What a great game to watch!!

We've battled back every game this year to keep it close so far, win or lose. This team has some grit to it. I don't think it's preposterous to picture this team playing .500 ball at some point this season.

Thanks again - great to see smileys on the road!!!

“They got a few guys that are really hard to guard,” shooting guard Kyle Korver said. “They made a lot of mid-range shots, which is what we typically try to make guys shoot.”

“The thing we just said in the locker room is give the Lakers a lot of credit for how well they played tonight,” Budenholzer said. “Their execution, their ball movement, their shot-making, their play-making, they were impressive. I think we can be a lot better. We need to be a lot better, 39 and 33 (points) in the third and fourth quarters, that’s hard to imagine. We can be so much sharper on both ends of the court. Different guys for different stretches for them really made plays.”

It's nice to hear this kind of praise from the opposition.

Can you imagine Russell drawing fouls like Harden? You can tell he's gonna be a beast in a few years.

On Ingram, he needs to be more aggressive on the offensive end. There was one play in the 2nd half where he faked the 3 and attacked the basket. I liked that but he passed on a layup or attempted dunk and instead kicked it out to Lou for a three. He's gotta try to score there.

Lesson: How to close games 101

The kids are learning

At the beginning of the season, many had assume that Deng (or Lou) will be taking many of the games.

DLO, Randle and JC are learning

As Luke shared, the team played with better focus yet still seemed disorganized and non-productive

Can you imagine Russell drawing fouls like Harden? You can tell he's gonna be a beast in a few years.

I can totally see it. I love seeing him learn how to draw fouls. Harden is my favorite player comp for Russell given his frame and skill set

I'm with this. Put the ball in his hands. More than anything, one of those other PGs takes minutes away from either JC,Lou, or BI. Hell no to that.

It's just great to see the stark contrast from last year - with really competent play. This is great. These games have been so enjoyable.

Randle is such a plus on switches at the end of games -- that's when teams are more willing to go ISO ball, and stop running sets after one action. He stifled Schroder 2/3 times

Thanks for the write ups DB!

But what about foxholes and fist fights

From DB's Thoughts and Ratings vs Indy:

Very prophetic. Probably helped (along with our youth and Luke spreading minutes around in all five games) reduce the usual effects of three games in 4 nights/ 2nd night of a B2B.

Great writeup, as always, DB. Much appreciated.

I always look forward to reading them.

Mine too. Lack of elite athleticism is another trait they share, and that clearly hasn't been a problem for Harden. won't be a problem for Dlo either, and he's actually trying on defense now, as opposed to harden not caring.
