Hmmmmmmmm… Did you chalk this one up as a loss before they even played? The Lakers sure didn’t. It was throwback night and both teams played the like it was the 80s. The Lakers like the Showtime Era team and the Warriors like the cellar dweller they were.

The Warriors couldn’t buy a shot in the first half. And while the Lakers weren’t shooting lights out either, they were moving the ball. The 19 assists in the half were the most in nearly two years (seven players had more than two assists).

The Warriors weren’t just going to go away after a half. They came out pressuring the passing lanes and aggressively trapping on the screen-rolls. This forced the Lakers out of their offense and having to think about counters they barely know. On the other end, the Lakers were in the penalty early in the third quarter. This slowed the game down with whistles and FTs, while pushing the Lakers into tougher shots against the shotclock.

The Lakers didn’t back away from the challenge. Some nice back cuts for scores and seemingly everyone contributing something. Luke said, “The main thing was, let’s not let them back in the game. They’re good enough. They can find a way back in the game on their own. Let’s make them work for everything.”

The Lakers hustled and played all 48. When the dust settled, it was a 117-97 blowout win for L.A.

It definitely took the Warriors shooting poorly. This game will headline for Steph Curry…157 games with a three and he goes 0-10 from behind the arc. Klay Thompson went 2-10. Meanwhile, the Lakers bench outscored the Warriors bench 61-31. Big games from Lou, D’Lo, Nance and Randle.

“He’s put the world of confidence in us,” Randle said of Luke. “Trusts us every day to go out there and make plays and play the right play. He’s put the power in our hands as a player to be a leader in the team and hold each other accountable. I don’t know, man. I love the guy.”

This young team is growing up quickly before our eyes. A lot of fight in them.

Russell -- -- In the second half when the Warriors started to pressure the Lakers in the passing lanes and overplay defensively, Russell was key to keeping them from imposing their will. He countered that with some excellent off-ball cuts that broke down the D when we found him. It was a little thing, but you’ve got to make a team pay the price for overplaying like that and he flexed the hoop IQ there. He also had some big plays creating with the shotclock about to expire with some of those busted sets. Limited but effective minutes from Russell. Luke let that second unit have some extended run as they were taking it to the Warriors down the stretch. This team is really taking on Luke and Russell’s personality in how they like to play the game. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 5-11 shooting (3-7 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He rattled down a wing three off the swing pass from Nick. He pulled up from three next time down and drew three FTs on a Curry foul, he made all three. He missed a three, short. He missed a wing there. He missed a pull-up three trying to beat the shotclock. He attacked and kicked out to Deng for the corner three. Wicked crossover to lose Klay, but he missed the short floater (Randle tipped in the dribble penetration). Second Half: He worked the ice D and swished the leaner from the wing. He drained a wing three off the dribble up against the shotclock. Nice help to poke a ball loose from behind Klay. On the other end, he attacked the overplaying D with a quick cut to take the pass and then lobbed to Mozgov for the jam. He made a tech FT. Another nice backdoor cut on the overplaying D and Mozgov made a great pass to find him for a reverse. He had to create with the shotclock about to expire, and he drained a tough three with Thompson all over him (Klay shaking his head). He missed a three in transition.

Randle -- -- How about those numbers against a great team tonight? A 20-14 game with lots of hustle plays working at both the PF and C spots. Another big block in the fourth quarter. This one on Green as Randle used his right, then controlled it like get out of here with that. It has felt like his motor has been improving the last few games as he gets into better game shape. The boards are starting to follow. Hopefully, that’s what’s happening and we don’t see any slippage because it makes a big difference. Loving the improvements on D this year. “He’s as big, strong and quick as anyone in the league,” Luke said. He said when he’s in attack mode (meaning not just scoring, but the doing all the little things he needs to do), that Julius makes a strong impact. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 10-18 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 14 boards (6 offensive), 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 5 turnovers and 3 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a +9. The Action: He missed a flat three. He missed a short turnaround in the middle of the paint. He missed another short one a few seconds later. He dunked off the drive and dish from Deng. He was blocked on a putback. He dunked off the drive and dish from Deng again. His interior feed was picked off. He muscled in a layup off the interior feed from Nance (I think he wanted the foul). He swished the short fade in the lane. He missed a layup off the two-man game but got credit for the tip in. He crashed the glass off the screen-roll and tipped in the Russell missed drive. He had 12 points on 6-11 shooting and 7 boards. Second Half: He attacked, hung and couldn’t finish. He missed a pumpiing jumphook. He sank an open 15-footer. Forced pass on a drive, but he hustled back, came up with a loose ball on a bad pass on the other end, pushed it out and hit Lou for the three. He scored a layup with his right on the drive and dish from Clarkson. He blocked Green’s drive and controlled it. He crashed the glass on the other end and tipped a tough miss by Lou. He tried to iso in the post and had it poked loose. He pressured Curry into a turnover. He missed an 18-footer. He muscled in a score in a crowd.

Deng -- -- Like a tall Nick Van Exel out there in that throwback No 9 jersey. Great start to this game with several sequences where he found teammates under the hoop for scores. The numbers didn’t really transpire for him, but he was key to this team getting off to a good start. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-6 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 4 boards, 3 assists, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 19 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He missed a wing three. He was blocked by Durant on a layup. He attacked baseline and fed Mozgov for the layup. Another drive and he bounced to Randle for the dunk. He curled into the paint off the dribble and hit Randle for another dunk. He missed a sideline three. He was fouled battling for an offensive board to regain possession. He fumbled away a pass under the hoop. He swished the corner three on the Russell kickout. Second Half: He airballed a floater trying to beat the shotclock. Way short on a 20-footer.

Mozgov -- -- Just a couple of stints for him. He did a great job on the boards, especially keeping possessions alive again with tap outs. He also had a big left-handed cram on the lob from Russell in the second half. I knew he was going to teach Russell to throw it up there for him to get. Crazy that our two expensive free agent signings this offseason only combed for 7 points in 35 minutes in a blowout win over the Warriors. Mozgov’s minutes would probably be a little limited against the Warriors anyway with their small ball. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-2 shooting to go with 5 boards (3 offensive), 1 assist, 1 block, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He was stripped under the hoop. He tapped out two offensive boards on the same trip down court. He scored a layup off the drive and dish from Deng. Second Half: He crammed down a lefty jam on the lob from Russell. Probably his best pass of the season out at the three line, he hit Russell cutting backdoor for a reverse layup.

Young -- -- “It starts at the defensive end and we go from there,” Nick said. Offensively, he had a good first half but struggled in the second half. He still made some blue collar plays in that second half when the shots weren’t going down. He rejected Klay’s drive and he had a big putback crashing the glass in a crowd. In other words, he’s making an impact right now even if the shot isn’t falling. He actually looked like a someone who could be coming off the bench in that other jersey…meaning playing within the system and deceptively good at D. Go figure. Again, credit to both him and Luke. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 4-11 shooting (1-6 from three, 3-3 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 1 block and 4 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: Nice extra pass to Russell for the three. He sank a pull-up 20-footer off the Randle handoff. He missed a corner jumper. He missed a deep three. He drained a pull-up wing three working off the screen. He missed on a drive from the right wing. He popped free for a three and drew a third foul on Curry, he made all three FTs. He swished a deep bomb from three in early offense. Second Half: He rejected Klay’s layup out of bounds and screamed. He missed a wing three up against the shotclock on iso. He missed a sideline three. He missed a sideline jumper. He missed an open three. Battling at the rim to pull down a missed Russell three and he scored the putback on his way down.

Clarkson -- -- He said he thinks this is the first time he’s been at .500 as a Laker. It didn’t take a great game from JC for the Lakers to win this, which is nice. He had some good moments, but wasn’t killing it. “We were just kind of playing basketball, cutting, playing free,” Clarkson said. “Then we got out there defensively, got some steals, got some fastbreak points.” He looked a lot more comfortable passing the ball in this one. We had some good set plays for him to execute The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-13 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 1 board, 5 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 29 minutes. He was a +18. The Action: He called a timeout when he was doubled off a high screen. Good job knocking a board loose to regain possession. He took the outlet off the Ingram steal and dunked. He couldn’t finish the lob out of the timeout, he was wide open, the pass was maybe a little off, but he probably could have scored that as a layup. Great switch to deny a layup on D. Poor clock management at the end of the quarter, going too early and the Warriors made a three off it (just run it to make sure you get the last shot…coaches talked with him on that one). He hit Black on the lob off the weave play to start the next quarter (love it when we run that for the lob). He missed a runner attacking from the wing. He attacked and missed the floater but Black tipped it in. He hit a floater off the drive and dish from Lou. He spotted Larry on the secondary break action and Nance didn’t disappoint with the massive, soaring jam. He sank a catch-and-shoot three off the down screen. He probed and swished the floater in the middle of the lane. He airballed a baseline jumper. Second Half: He missed a chuck at a three to beat the shotclock. He missed a challenged wing jumper. He tapped out an offensive board. He attacked to his right, drew the D and hit Randle with a pass in tight quarters for a layup. He missed a wild drive to his right. He airballed a scoop shot in the lane and grabbed it for a turnover. He missed a wing three.

Williams -- -- We’ve may have unofficially given him the backup PG role, sitting both of our elderly guards and letting Lou and Clarkson run the guard spots. And if you haven’t noticed, Lou is a steadying force out there. When teams are trying to make a push against us or we’re trying to do that to them, he’s had that steady, calming influence, hitting big shots and making big plays. Love his answer when asked about whether it was offense or defense. “For me personally, I hang my hat on offense,” Lou said. “I just got to stick to what I know. I go out there and try my butt off on the defensive end…I just try my butt off and try to give us everything I can on the defensive end but offense is what I hold my hat on.” It’s an honest assessment, knowing he’s not the greatest defender, but understanding that effort (multiple efforts) can make a huge difference on D. When we get him making that kind of effort, working hard on D (with 3 steals and 1 block tonight)…that’s all you can ask. Yeah, he’ll get beat at times, but he punched back on the defensive end…and then punched a whole lot more on the offensive end. When the team was up against the pressure, once again he manufactured big points and made key passes again and again. Love this game from him tonight. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 7-14 shooting (2-6 from three, 4-5 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 4 assists, 3 steals, 1 block, 2 turnovers and no fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +18. The Action: He jumped a passing lane and deflected a pass off a Warrior for a turnover. He missed a wing three gong to his left. He wanted the foul on the chuck at the rim, it missed but Nance finished the unintentional alley-oop. He made a tech FT. He took an inbounds after that, curled into the lane and lobbed to Black for the dunk. He attacked baseline and fed Clarkson for the floater. Great challenge on a Curry three to force a brick. He attacked out of the timeout, Nance backdoored Durant from the corner and Lou found him for the slam. He missed a deep three. He sank the drifting baseline jumper. He chucked a three expecting a whistle and missed. Second Half: He attacked the paint on the busted weave sequence, drew contact and hit the And-1 floater, he made the FT. Early offense attack and he swished the floater. He drew a perimeter reach creating with the shotclock low (textbook job catching the reach with his off hand as he went up), he made two FTs. He missed a sideline fade. He blindsided Klay as he was turned at the three line, Lou pounced to swipe the ball and take it the distance for the layup. He missed an awkward three, not able to get his footing right after the flyby. He drained a big three on the kickout by Randle in transition (that forced a timeout). He iso’d on Klay, crossed him over and swished the three out of that timeout. He missed a tough floater going to his right and having to shoot it over Klay on his right shoulder (Randle bailed him out with the tip in). He hustled back in D to steal a ball in the paint. Out of a timeout, he broke down the D on the drive and threw it back to Nance who came curling in for the jam. He swiped a backcourt pass and scored the layup.

Ingram -- -- There was a steal off a set play for the Warriors tonight where he fought through a screen by Green to swipe a pass to Durant. Give an assist to Luke on that. Watch him get up off the bench as the play is developing and point to Durant. Rookie was on the same page, battled through Green’s sticky, handsy screen and made the steal. Love that by both guys. Brandon shot threes like Curry tonight (going 0-4, heh), but he did a great job getting to the line. And an even better job making all but one of the 9 FTAs. On the other end of that he, scored on a drive at the end of the corner. He’s just a kid and he’s got a lot to understand and develop in his game, but he still led the team with the +23. “Being aggressive helps out a lot,” he said of some of his improvements. He did not shy away from attacking or taking shots. Eventually not only are those going to fall with consistency, he’s going to have a better grasp for getting exactly what he wants. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 2-8 shooting (0-4 from three, 8-9 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 3 assists, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a +23. The Action: He airballed a short wing pull-up. He missed an open sideline three. He swiped a cross-court pass and instantly outlet to Clarkson for the breakaway dunk. He was hammered from behind on a drive for FTs, he made one. He posted up and hit Nance cutting for the score off the decoy. He lined up in the high post in the horns, worked off the screen from Black and lobbed back to him for the score. He was fouled on a sideline three, he made all three, nice job. Aggressive attack down the lane, spinning and missing. Second Half: He drew FTs on a jumper, he made both (makeup call for the one on Curry on the other end. He missed a wing three. He swiped a pass fighting through a screen and using his length to disrupt the set play. On the other end, he attacked with the clock low and scored the running, hanging 8-footer. He missed a three, long. He was stripped at the elbow trying to pull up. He crashed the glass and two-handed back down a missed Randle jumper. He missed a good look at a corner three. He forced a pass in crowd, turnover. He drew more FTs on a drive and made both.

Nance -- -- I had to pause the game and replay Nance’s dunk for Mrs. DB and my son, prefacing it with this guy’s dad was one of the original dunk champions. Watch this… Damn, Larry. I title this dunk “Man Crush.” Because not only did he crush the defender and possibly the Warrior’s collective souls in this game, but how do you not love Larry after that? He was wincing himself after the posterizing hammer job down the middle of the lane. That was a massive throwdown. “When I get my two steps, not too many that can jump with me,” Larry said. The entire bench was on their feet. “That dude is crazy,” Clarkson said. Multiple dunks for Larry in this one. He did an excellent job cutting off the ball in this game. Bottle that. Remember it. Repeat. That off ball movement when the D is occupied gets him going to the rim with speed. “We really inserted our will defensively,” Nance said. That’s what I want to hear, especially from him. “When we figure it out like we did tonight, we can be a really, really strong defensive team,” Nance said. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 6-6 to go with 9 boards, 2 assists, 1 block and 1 foul in 30 minutes. He was a +18. The Action: He turned an off-balance chuck from Lou, who thought he was fouled, into an oop with the catch and finish at the rim. He slipped the screen beautifully on the post decoy, took the pass from Ingram, stopped to let Durant fly by and hit he jumphook. He destroyed West on a dunk down the middle of the lane on the secondary break action, wow, and the look on Larry’s face afterward. He backdoored Durant as Lou attacked, took the bounce pass and slammed. He bounced an interior pass to Randle for the layup. Second Half: He should have cut baseline from the corner when Black took a pass that forced the D to help, Black charged after hesitating to look for the pass. He came flying in to stab at an offensive board, he got a piece of it and he went up high off the glass and in. He slammed off the drive and dish from Lou out of the timeout.

Black -- -- “We’re lucky here we have versatile bigs,” Luke said, meaning that they can switch and cover a variety of players on D. That C spot is really a mix of players and Luke is getting a better feel for it. Great first half working the lob plays for a few scores. They took that away from him in the second half and packed the paint to make it more difficult. Luke needed someone to relieve that pressure, so he brought Randle in for Black at the C spot and that helped close the deal. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 4-6 shooting to go with 5 boards, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 15 minutes. He was a +11. The Action: He dunked off the screen-roll lob from Lou off a SLOB play. He threw down another lob after a good screen off the weave play to start the quarter. He tipped in a missed Clarkson floater. He rolled off the horns sequence, Ingram lobbed to him and he scored the layup. He missed a 17-footer. Second Half: He was stripped in the paint. He was called for a charge when Durant flopped. Nice challenge on Iguodala to force a miss. He threw a pass away instead of powering up under the hoop.

Zubac -- -- He came in with 47 seconds left. Not enough time to do anything. The Stats: He didn’t shoot or score in 1 minute. He was a +0. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Robinson -- -- He came in for the final minute for garbage time. Garbage time in a win over the Warriors. Imagine that. The Stats: He didn’t shoot or score in 1 minute. He was a +0. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Walton -- -- The Lakers got off to an 8-0 start, but Luke called timeout after they went dry for a couple of minutes up 2, fully aware the Warriors wouldn’t stay cold for long… Some good passing by the Lakers, particularly Deng off the dribble… The Lakers led 16-10 when Nance came in for Randle and Clarkson in for Young… Ingram in for Deng, Lakers up 4… Lou in for Russell… The Lakers pulled out to a 12-point lead before some poor clock management allowed the Warriors a three at the end of the quarter… The Lakers led 24-15 after the first quarter (both teams shot a combined 2-18 from three)… They pushed out to a 32-19 lead and forced a timeout after a couple of minutes… The Lakers stretched it to 18 but gave up a couple of dunks to trim it down and Luke called a timeout… Randle in for Black, Nick in for Ingram. They got a dunk on for Nance out of the timeout… Now a timeout from Kerr as the Lakers extended to a 46-27 lead midway through the quarter… That was cut down to 11 quickly as the second unit ran out of steam with 3 minutes left… Luke brought back in the starters with Ingram instead of Mozgov… The Lakers took a 65-49 lead into halftime. They had 19 assists, the most for a half in nearly 2 years. Curry was 0-6 from three (Warriors 2-17 from three)… The Lakers pushed out to a 21-point lead, but got into the penalty in under 3 minutes... Warriors trying to overplay the passing lanes on D… Luke called a timeout after a three by Klay to cut it to 14 with 7:40 in the third… A 16-2 run by the Warriors… He sat Randle and Mozgov for Nance and Black up 7… A couple Lakers scores to stretch it back to 12 and Kerr took the timeout… We sat Deng for Ingram… Clarkson in for Young up 7… Lou in for Russell up 8… FTs really hurting the Lakers this quarter… Luke read a play from the sideline, yelled to Ingram on what to watch for as a screen came and Ingram swiped the pass at the end of the quarter… The Lakers led 93-82 heading into the fourth quarter… Kerr with a quick timeout after a steal by Lou for a score that got the crowd going… Second unit struggling a little to get into a flow offensively. Luke sat Black up 10 for Randle with 9 minutes left… A big three by Lou to force the lead to 13 and another timeout from Kerr shortly later… They pushed it to 18… Timeout came with the Lakers up 16 with 5 minutes left… They stretched it to 20, game over… He subbed out Lou and Nance to get some applause in the final minute… The Lakers are at .500 with wins over Houston, Atlanta and Golden State, not exactly pushover teams. Well done, Luke… “We’re sharing the ball. We’re playing like a team and we’re fighting,” Luke said…

It was exhausting hoping you hold a lead all game long against the Warriors, let me tell you.

This should be a fun one for GT. First, you've got some great execution of plays early on (for instance, love that weave to lob to Black, while rotating Lou into the corner so Curry is the guy who has to help at the rim). Then you have the Warriors taking that all away pressuring in the second half...some nice moments by Russell in that, but the team needing more work there on the counters. Then, you've got Randle coming into to release some of the pressure with his more versatile game offensively later in the game.

Really a great coaching battle. The timeouts by Luke and Kerr were both excellent (and some of the plays out of those, as well). Should be a fun game to slow down and pull apart for video.

Fun game. Can see the promise of some of the young ones on display. And Lou has won me over this season.
Thanks DB

Ok, somebody lock this version of Nick up and never let the other one out.

Thanks DB! So spoiled with your T&Rs and GT's video breakdowns

You wanna see giddy? Watch GT explain Dlo running pistol sets.

Thanks DB I'm still a little shell shocked.

It was exhausting hoping you hold a lead all game long against the Warriors, let me tell you.

By halftime I was convinced it was an anomaly. This is not really what I'm seeing. Then I started to hear GT in the background calling plays and everything made sense, it was something I've not seen in a decade, and (bleep) just went bonkers.

I think we're back boss

I kept waiting for the floor to drop from under us. Warriors got within 6 I think at one point and I was like "alright well I'll still be proud of these guys if they lose this game". I'm still feeling the adrenaline of the win.

Thanks for T&R

Great win. I was especially impressed with how they closed the 3rd to stretch the lead back to double-digits after the Warriors cut it down to 6.

Gotta love that 2nd unit with the +18 and above, minus Black who was a +11.

Thanks DB! Awesome win.

So, did I observe correctly that a lot more of the Laker guards (like Russell and Williams) are starting to develop some counters - namely back-cutting when their defenders are overplaying the passing angle?

I'm pretty sure that we've gotten more easy baskets in 6 games this season than we had all of last season. The Luke hire was a massive home run.

As always, great breakdown DB!
