The Evolution of Julius Randle… I’ve always loved how Julius Randle has never backed down from anyone in this league – jawing at guys like KG as a rookie and tonight going nose to nose with Tyson Chandler in the final minute tonight. He’s a man child, for sure, and the team feeds off that strength and confidence.

After he and Chandler picked up a double tech with some shoves and some yapping, we put the ball in Julius’s hands for iso. He stared down Chandler, smiling big as he approached him with the dribble. Then, he fired a bullet pass over to Clarkson, catching the Suns completely off guard as Clarkson swished the dagger three.

He duped everyone into thinking he was going to iso. The kid just took the old man to school as the Lakers finished off the Suns 119-108.

As Luke stood at midcourt, he debated whether to call a timeout as Randle sized up Chandler.

“I said let’s see what happens. If it doesn’t work out, it’s a great teaching moment,” Luke said. “And the fact that he did what he did was such a winning play on his part. Unselfish. It’s everything we want. It’s him using his brain. Him being competitive. Him fighting for the team and then making an unselfish play to a teammate who knocks down a big time three.”

Randle’s full game was on display tonight, as if we were fast forwarded into sometime in the future. His jumper was falling. He pushed out breaks and found teammates off the dribble for dunks. He provided strong weakside D. He set hard screens to consistently free up teammates. Everything you have wanted from him as both he and the team grow up before our eyes.

It’s been a long time since you expected the Lakers to win a game. A long time. Sure, you hoped they’d win games and compete, but going into this one there was an expectation that they should and would win. With the W Lakers are over .500 in November for the first time since 2011.

“They’re more mature than a lot of people would guess or give them credit for,” Luke said. He was expecting the team to come out flat after the big Golden State win, but they didn’t. He loved the defensive effort by the team in the first quarter, holding the Suns to 15 points.

“Their actions speak loud,” Luke said.

Russell -- -- He struggled with the shot early on and was a little reluctant to shoot as the game went along. That didn’t stop him from drilling a huge backbreaking three late in the game. That came on the heels of probably the biggest defensive play of the game where he stole the ball with a reach, pushed it out and hit Nick for a 4-point play. That sequence took the game for the Lakers. He also had some key stops in crunch time, as well. Love seeing Russell and Young teaming up like that with their baggage from last season. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 2-11 shooting (2-6 from three, 5-6 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 6 assists, 4 turnovers, 1 steal and 3 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: Looked like he poked a ball loose to start a fastbreak. He hit Deng trailing the break for a three. He missed a 17-footer. He missed a wing pull-up. He threw a pass away on the break. He missed a short wing pull-up, got it back and missed the turnaround in the post. He pulled out an offensive board, ball-faked at the three line and then hit the three. He missed an early offense three. Reluctant to shoot, he then threw a pass away. He threw up a three trying to draw a whistle on the shot and missed badly. Second Half: He crossed over, attacked and bounced a pass between defenders to Mozgov for the And-1 layup (great pass). His pass was picked off for a score the other way. He missed a deep three. He was forced into a chuck over a couple defenders trying to beat the shotclock and missed. He hit Mozgov for the jumper. He attacked and missed the pull-up 16-footer. Huge steal, just swiping it away on a reach on help D along the sideline, then he pushed it out and hit Nick for the big And-1 three from the wing. Huge wing three out of a timeout off the Randle screen that freed him up. He fouled a three shooter trying to recover from behind. Lost on D, he gave up a layup. He missed an 18-footer off the Randle screen. He drew a push-off foul on Booker out of a timeout to get the stop. He drew a perimeter foul and made one FT. He was intentionally fouled and made both FTs. He made a couple more.

Randle -- -- “Those are the types of plays that guys that want to win, make,” said DFish in the postgame of Randle’s pass to Clarkson. How about that screen he set for the Russell three late in the game. Just took out the defender, running to set the screen quickly while Chandler was about 12 feet away from helping. If players don’t respect your jumper and want to zone up, this is another counter. Clear away a defender with a screen and open up a big shot for a teammate. This is Randle when he’s being coached. A lot of those things that were painfully absent all last season are starting to appear this year under the new coaching staff. Julius is elevating his game. The perimeter jumper looked strong tonight as he hit several. Loving it. He’s going to have to bring it in the next one with Nance out. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 6-9 shooting (6-6 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 4 assists, 1 turnover, 1 steal and 4 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He attacked to his right across the lane and hit the short fade. He drew FTs on the break, he made both. He missed a 14-footer in the lane. He swished a 10-foot pull-up. He sank a quick-fire 19-footer. He found Mozgov for an open jumper. Nice help D to knock a pass away in the lane. He pushed it up court, stepped on the gas, bumped off Chandler and scored the layup. He hammered down the baseline dunk on the break. He pulled down the rebound, pushed it up while shielding off a defender, then whipped a one-handed pass off the dribble (with his right, mind you) and hit Mozgov for the dunk. He had 12 points on 5-6 shooting and 4 boards. Second Half: He missed a drive. He hit Deng with the swing pass for a corner three. He knocked a ball loose, but had it poked loose as he tried to push it out. Great help D to block a shot from the weakside. He iso’d and missed the shot over Chandler. He hit a big turnaround fade to beat the shotclock. He screamed after getting the holding foul on Chandler when Randle tried to go to block a shot (then he got into it with Chandler on the other end). After a double tech, we put the ball in Randle’s hands to iso, he wound the clock down, duped the Suns into thinking he was going to attack and then whipped a pass to Clarkson for the back-breaking three. He was intentionally fouled, he made both FTs. He was intentionally fouled again, he made both FTs.

Deng -- -- He sank a couple of threes and hit the boards pretty well (although he missed a boxout badly on one stand). We went to some very small lineups with Nance out and Luke not going back to Deng at the PF. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 2-5 shooting (2-4 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 7 boards and 2 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He drained a three trailing the break. Poor boxout and he gave up a putback score. He missed a wing three. He missed a corner three. Second Half: He took a pass in the lane, missed the layup but drew a defender and Mozgov slammed it down. He sank the corner three off a swing pass. He attacked baseline and drew FTs, he made one.

Mozgov -- -- Loved his energy tonight. The Lakers needed that effort and impact with others struggling (imagine if he delivers that consistently as the team starts to figure each other out more?). He still has some wild passes out there and the 3 turnovers don’t cut it. But he was imposing his size out there with multiple offensive boards and some nice finishes. How great is it to see your PF push out a break and hit your C ahead of the pack for the dunk? Our bigs do an excellent job changing ends. We went small late in the game again with Randle at the C. That seems to be Luke’s M.O. right now, getting more speed and mobility out there. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 6-9 shooting (2-3 from the line) to go with 8 boards (4 offensive), 2 assists, 3 turnovers and 1 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He missed an 18-footer. He missed a lefty jumphook. He hit the baseline jumper. He missed a floater. He scored the layup on the screen roll with Lou. He wasn’t ready for a pass and it hit him in the head. Nice job running the floor with Randle on the break and Randle found him for the dunk. Second Half: Good hands to take a Russell pass through traffic for an And-1 layup, he made the FT. Weird decision not to try to score an offensive board right at the rim and he threw it away instead. He slammed back down the missed Deng layup. He crashed the glass and drew FTs, he made one. He sank a jumper off the two-man game with Russell. Quick handoff to Nick for the baseline jumper. He threw a pass out of bounds trying to go backdoor.

Young -- -- Great game from Nick. Huge 4-point play when Russell hit him on the break off a steal with 4 minutes left. One of the plays of the game. We needed his scoring with Russell struggling, but Nick also did the little things. He pulled down 7 boards, battling hard on the glass. We had some small ball lineups and need everyone in there working the glass to control the boards. Great to see him stepping up there. Luke has been sticking with the guys with hot hands when he finds them. Nick played the most minutes as a result. What’s nice about having a deep team is that we can weather bad games from others if teammates step up. Luke just adjusts the rotations and minutes to dial in his most potent lineups as the game goes on. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 8-14 shooting (3-7 from three, 3-3 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover, 1 steal, 1 block and 4 fouls in 36 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He pushed out a loose ball and scored a layup. He crashed the glass and regained a possession with a foul. Nice challenge on Booker to force the miss, grab the board and push out the break. He missed a three off a dribble handoff. He missed a FT pull-up. He missed an open three. He swished a corner three in early offense. He missed a corner three on a kickout. Second Half: He sank a pull-up at the elbow. He missed a long wing jumper. He swished a baseline jumper off a handoff. He attacked right and hit the pull-up 17-footer. He drained a big three straight away off the Black kickout. He pulled up from 20 and drilled a shot right over his man. He missed a three off a screen. Huge And-1 three on the wing off a Russell steal and kickout with 4:15 left, he finished off the 4-point play with the FT. He made a couple FTs off an intentional foul.

Clarkson -- -- Luke on JC wanting to take Booker defensively. “Clarkson got upset with me that I didn’t go to him for that assignment,” Luke said when Booker got hot. “He came up and told me he wanted it. JC got a chance late and did a very good job, too.” Nice to see someone asking for the tough assignment. That’s progress, for sure. Strong scoring game off the bench, including that back-breaking three off the Randle pass late in the game. A lot of good moments in this one, but it’s never smooth. It’s very hit and miss with him at times. I think that’s maybe because he’s still just learning the sets. Stu brings up quite a bit that Clarkson has his mind made about what he’s going to do. I think you see that in the double-dribble, the getting caught in the air and throwing it away or missing an obvious lob pass. So while you look at the nice numbers in this one, there were also some clunky plays that seem to appear with frequency this season. Pretty sure that gets cleared up with more reps. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 8-16 shooting (1-2 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 assist, 3 turnovers, 1 block and 5 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a +12. The Action: He hit a controlled runner in the lane after getting his man on his hip. He missed a corner three. He curled into the lane off the weave and scored a layup. He double dribbled unsure whether he wanted to shoot. He got caught in the air and threw it away. He missed a pull-up wing jumper. He curled into the paint off the screen, took the pass, spun and scored a layup. He hit the short floater in the lane. Too upright on a closeout and he gave up an And-1 drive, while picking up his third foul. He had 8 points on 4-6 shooting. Second Half: He missed Tarik who was wide open for a lob (opting to shoot and miss instead). He missed a wild drive but got it back, he then pulled down another offensive board and reset the offense. He attacked with speed and couldn’t finish over a big. He took a pass curling into the lane and hit the short jumper. He drew FTs on a hesitation dribble, he made one. He attacked in transition, took a lot of contact with no call and missed the layup. He worked behind the screen and hit the 17-footer. He missed a layup probing through the lane. He sank a sideline jumper off the screen. He had the dagger three off the Randle stare down with Chandler and kickout to JC. He gave up a lob not ready for a backscreen on Julius.

Williams -- -- On Luke’s coaching: “It’s like playing for one of your teammates just the way he speaks to guys, the way he goes about game planning and just trying to get his message across,” Williams said adding that Luke’s communication will get the young guys to run through a wall for him. It seems he’s got both Nick and Lou doing that for him. They’ve played some strong two-way ball for guys not thought of as defenders. Lou had a couple more steals in this one and some nice hustle plays on D, which have been much more consistent this season. Not a dominant game, but a steady well-rounded one. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-12 shooting (1-2 from three, 3-5 from the line) to go with 4 board, 6 assists, 4 turnovers, 2 steals and 1 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He attacked and missed a layup. He kicked out to Ingram for the sideline three. He knocked a pass loose on D. He missed a fade, chased it down and missed a baseline jumper. He swished a wing three on the break. He spotted Nick in the corner for a three. He drew an offensive foul on Booker in the post. He sank a pull-up wing jumper off the screen. He had his pass picked off in the paint. He setup Mozgov for the layup off the screen-roll. He hit a tough off-balance leaner from the elbow. He sank a sideline jumper off the kickout. He hit Randle on the break for the slam. He had 9 points, 4 assists and 2 steals. Second Half: He missed a floater. He hit the quick pull-up from 17 feet. He missed a floater. He hit Ingram on the break for the layup. He missed a wing three. He attacked the paint and back-rimmed the short one. He drew a reach foul on a three, he made all three FTs. He attacked down the lane to his right and drew FTs after getting contact, he missed both.

Ingram -- -- He sank a three on a kickout on his first attempt and later filled the lane on the break for a layup. Those were his only makes of the game but scratched a few times from the FT line, as well. He had his hands full defensively. “He kept getting lost on Booker when Booker got hot,” Luke said. I’m not sure what a breakout game will look like for Ingram. Maybe 20 points? I really wouldn’t expect him to get much more than that in a game right now, nor be able to consistently produce those for a while. I feel like he’ll work his way up to it over time, but his growth is going to be steady vs. suddenly seeing things click. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 2-7 shooting (1-2 from three, 4-6 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block and 1 foul in 25 minutes. He was a +10. The Action: He swished a catch-and-shoot three from the corner off a kickout from Lou. He missed an 18-footer trying to beat the shotclock. He drew FTs on the break, he made one. He attacked and hit Black in the lane for the layup. He missed a pull-up, possibly fouled. Second Half: Nice challenge on a Booker drive to force a miss. He drew FTs on the perimeter and made both. He blocked a big from behind, filled the lane, got the pass and scored the layup. He was stripped out of bounds on an attack from the elbow. He missed a wing three. He missed a pull-up 18-footer. He was intentionally fouled, he made one FT.

Nance -- -- He hit the floor for a loose ball and was undercut in the process, slamming his head against the court. He left the game shortly later and was diagnosed with the concussion and won’t play in the next game. I almost feel like he’s the heart of that second unit (although there are plenty of contributors, with Lou and JC especially). Nance just pulls it all together. We certainly missed him the rest of the game and that probably made this a lot closer. Hopefully, he bounces back quick. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 2-2 shooting to go with 1 board and 1 steal in 3 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: Nice anticipation in the paint and he swiped the pass. He hit his head on the floor diving for a loose ball and getting fouled, he made both FTs. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Black -- -- An up and down game from Tarik. While he played with some great energy, he also had 3 turnovers. We had 6 turnovers from Mozgov and Black combined. So even though they hit the offensive boards well to get extra possessions, they gave them right back. Need to clean that up. He had a nice putback jam and a rejection at the rim. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-6 shooting to go with 7 boards (3 offensive) to go with 1 assist, 3 turnovers, 1 steal, 1 block and 1 foul in 17 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He choked a layup. He was stripped out of bounds to blow a dunk opportunity. He was called for 3 seconds trying to get post position. He scored a layup off the drive and dish from Ingram. He blocked a drive at the rim to ignite a break. Horrible outlet over Clarkson’s head by several feet. Second Half: He kept an offensive board alive. He hit the floor for a loose ball on the same set to battle for possession. He crashed the glass and one-hand jammed a missed floater. He pulled down an offensive board and hit Nick for three. He blocked a baseline drive without leaving the floor. He couldn’t finish a slam over a big. He missed a layup. He was rejected on a layup off a nice setup from Clarkson.

Robinson -- -- With Nance out, Robinson got some brief floor time in the second half. Not much to write about. He missed a putback attempt and blew a possible score on what looked like an excellent rim run. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting to go with 1 board and 1 block in 5 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Great rim run, then he fumbled away the pass from Lou. He couldn’t get a putback to drop.

Walton -- -- Some strong D to get the team out in transition. They led 9-2 when the Suns took the timeout… Lakers went dry for a bit, missing good looks… They led 15-12 when Clarkson came in for Nick… Ingram in for Deng same score… Nance and Black in for Randle and Mozgov, Lou in for Russell a few seconds later Lakers up 3… Strong defensive quarter… The Lakers led 23-15 after the first quarter… Deng in for Nance… The Lakers pulled out to a 27-15 lead, forcing a timeout… Young in for Ingram, Lakers up 10… They pushed it up to 15 before getting it trimmed back to 10. Luke called a timeout and brought in Mozgov and Russell for Black and Deng… So a Mozgov, Young, Russell, Clarkson, Williams lineup, super small at PF… Randle in for Williams, Lakers up 10 still… Clarkson out for Lou after his third foul… The Lakers led 54-43 after the first half… The lead was trimmed to 5. Russell struggling with his shot… He went with Black, Deng, Ingram, Clarkson and Lou midway through the quarter… Young in for Deng as the Lakers go small now with Ingram at PF… They pushed out to a 13-point lead but had it trimmed back down at the end of the quarter… The Lakers led 83-76 heading into the fourth… He started a Black, Robinson, Ingram, Clarkson, Williams lineup… The Suns cut it to 2 with Booker heating up… Young in for Ingram to try to help cool down Booker… Lakers up 91-89 when Randle came back in for Robinson with 7 minutes left… Up 1, Randle, Ingram, Young, Clarkson, Russell with over 5 minutes left… A big 4-point play sequence with Russell to Young and they pushed it out to a 7-point lead and forced a timeout with 4 minutes left. Russell then drilled a killer three out of that timeout after getting a stop and a board. (A nice play where Clarkson screened the screener for Randle to run out and quickly set the screen, which freed Russell for the three.)… Intentional foul fest by the Suns down the stretch…

Robinson's help and team defense looked poor but maybe it's because he hasn't played with the team much

But then what are they doing at practice

So maybe he's just a bad defender

Youngsters are growing up

Since the team has a dependable closer from a roster of talented players, I agree with DB that it is great that Luke can and has gone 10 deep.

It will be fascinating
** seeing which players will start playing effectively - consistency.
** how the players adapt after they have been scouted
** when opposing teams are focusing more attention in their Laker games
** seeing how they react during a bad patch of games
** to see how the team reacts if they have any injuries (hope Jr. is ok!)

Great to rediscover the joys of discussing a Laker team that one can be excited about!

Love the theme of this "thoughts and ratings" being the evolution of Julius Randle because that's exactly what he was. Julius of last year probably would've taken Chandler (who was trying to punk him) one-on-one but Julius of this year just smiled and made the simple play which turned out to be the play of the game. Dude is growing up right in front of our eyes and it's fun to watch

47 win pace. Who knows how it will end up but very proud of "actual" progress! Bravo! Thank you DB!

Thanks DB! Excellent recap once again!

That Randle to Clarkson play.

That was cold, hard justice. Ice cold. Wow!

That just wouldn't have been the same if Clarkson missed.

4 and 3 - who would have guessed pre-season??

Great to see a win streak - I hope Gary Lance is OK and fully ready to play once Tuesday's come and gone!

Thanks DB! This team reminds me of the Van Exel and Eddie Jones years with an 18 year old Kobe (or maybe even before Kobe).

They're fun to watch again!

Now I'm not saying our championship runs weren't fun, but I've lost that magic for 3-4 years now. It's all coming back. =D

Only watched the second half, as I've been busy all day. Was happy to see them scrape out a win.

Not so happy seeing Nance out with a concussion

Thanks for the writeup, DB!

Thanks DB.

They are fun to watch again and playing pretty darn good.

Love how Williams and Young have been playing: Rejuvenation?

Mosgov looks huge out their and play decent

Randle wow you can see that he might develop into a beast, a take over a game type of beast

Russell still a little hit or miss he will become more consistent but a star is forming.

JC Right on the edge playing good on both ends

Ingram: It is going to take a while but he brings something to each game

Nance; Improved still a little stiff on offense but that will change

Luke: Praise the Lord what a blessing he has been

Darn we can play defense and offense and everyone is working hard. Love this team and we can watch them grow

There seemed to be less ball movement than some other games but we still got the W even on an "off" night. Phoenix really started early on the foul/free throw game which ran up the score; the crowd had the taco chant rocking for a little while there.

It was good to see Russell close the game and come up clutch a couple of times in spite of his early game struggles. If you would have told me that Russell would struggle to start the season and we'd still be 4-3 I'd have told you to lay off the crack. It is awesome to see the way the team has come together.

Randle is turning into the BEAST we hoped he'd be. Nick is rounding his game nicely and keeping some of his personality. The bench is among the best in the league. It is fun to watch!

Luuuuuuuuuke!

Thanks DB!

Jesus Christ, that can't be right can it? 5 years?!

No, lakers were 45-37 in 2012-2013

Good T&R Post!
Lakers did really good in that game. Last year we would have let that team run all over us, but you can truly tell the effort was there on the defensive end of the ball.
What can you say about Randle, he's slowly coming into his own. It's only going to get better from here on out!
GO LAKERS!

Wanted to say this. But I'm guessing he probably meant in November.

It's pretty awesome to see the Lakers win despite not playing a great game. That's the sign of a good team. I also love how enthusiastically our vets cheer for the young fellas. Moz doesn't get crunch-time minutes. MWP is often a DNP. Huertas and Calderon are buried on the bench. Despite that, these guys are the first off the bench to cheer on our young fellas. I love the chemistry and camaraderie I've seen from our team this season.

Randle really surprised me on that iso play. Not only did I expect him to go iso on Tyson, I really wanted him to just to show his fearlessness as a pro. Well, he did something even more and it worked out better for the team. Props to him for making the right basketball play. Props to Luke for his coaching, which I am sure, was a major influence on Randle's decision.

If Luke is the major addition to this team, I'm happy. He's instilled a sense of purpose and maturity with this team. Two things in particular: 1) bringing JC off the bench after JC signs the big extension; 2) making Swaggy P a starter not only because he's become a better defender, but to have him work with DLo on the floor, a trust building effort to smooth over the whole Iggy situation. Before the season, Swaggy was considered expendable and DLo a backstabbing snitch. Now you see, in this game and the ATL game, DLo making the play to dish to Swaggy for the closing dagger. Great team building!

Great post. I completely agree. I love seeing those two share in a great play together. It's very cathartic.
