PostPosted: Sun Nov 20, 2016 3:59 pm    Post subject: THE Political Thread (ALL Political Discussion Here - See Rules, P. 1)

The purpose of this thread is to allow political discussion. This thread is to be a safe space for ALL posters (regardless of political affiliation, political bias and/or political agenda) to post regarding political analysis, opinions and/or news. Therefore, ALL political news, opinions and/or debates will belong in this thread and this thread alone. At all times in this thread, you should be open-minded, reasonable, rational and respectful. This thread is NOT a sanctuary to promote mistruth, disseminate propaganda or engage in hyperbole. Likewise, if you want to post extreme rhetoric, don't post here. That's what your personal friends and Facebook are for.

Given all of the above and the intended purpose of this thread, this thread will be moderated and regulated by the following rules:

1. No Ad Hominem/Personal Attacks: You are to post news, address arguments and discuss elections, proposed ballot measures, policies, executive orders, laws, court decisions, legislation, etc. Do not discuss a poster's perceived agenda or a poster's perceived bias. Direct your comments toward the poster's opinion, the news provided or the policy issues discussed rather than directing your comments toward the poster themselves. The general rule is attack the post, not the poster, especially in this thread.

2. No Trolling: While you may always provide an argument or counter-argument, you may not post the same opinion or story over and over. Likewise, do not come to the thread to post controversial opinions, perspective or news stories for the purpose of inflaming users. No kamikaze posts (i.e. throwing a controversial topic into the thread only to disappear). All of the above will be seen as trolling.

3. Do Not Antagonize - Show Respect and Be Nice: Do not make condescending, snarky or antagonistic comments. Likewise, two wrongs do not make a right. If you believe someone is being disrespectful or is trying to provoke you, you are not excused from doing the same simply because "they started it." Similarly, respect the fact someone may have a difference of opinion than yours and come from a different background, with the expectation they do the same with you.

4. Do Not Intentionally Post Fake News: We do not want fake news on this website. However, we understand sometimes people are duped. If you post fake news innocently or by accident, the mods are likely to look the other way. Such a determination as to the poster's innocence or culpability in regards to posting fake news will be determined by the mods on a case by case basis. However, before you post, try to be as confident in the source as you can be. If it comes from a good source and turns out to be wrong, no harm, no foul.

5. Do Not Label, Generalize or Stereotype: Do not make statements which generalize, stereotype or attack a group of people, a political party, the supporters of any particular policy or politician. For example, do not make statements such as "people who support [POLITICIAN or POLICY] are all [LABEL]." Likewise, there will be no racist comments. Attacks on any group of people simply because they belong to a specific sex, religion, gender, sexual orientation, nationality or race are likewise not permitted.

6. Report, Report, Report: If you believe someone is violating these rules above, trolling or doing anything inappropriate, press the report button and let a mod handle it. Do not address the poster's poor conduct yourself. You will only make it worse.

----------------------------------------

If you violate these rules above, the mods are likely to provide less leeway than one might receive in other threads. What might get you only a warning in another thread is more likely to get you a suspension in this thread. The purpose of this site is to promote a friendly and safe Lakers community. The political thread and the ability to post in it is a privilege, not a right. As such, if this thread ever threatens the purpose of this site or creates any kind of significant divide or animosity amongst posters, it will be closed. We are all Lakers' fans first here. This thread will not be allowed to interfere with that as our Lakers fandom takes precedent and the sanctity of this community is paramount.

That said, let the discussion begin. Look forward to it.

President-elect Donald Trump plans to nominate Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) to be attorney general of the United States, The Washington Post and other news outlets reported Friday. Sessions is a vocal opponent of marijuana legalization whose elevation to attorney general could deal a blow to state-level marijuana legalization efforts across the country.

At a Senate drug hearing in April, Sessions said that “we need grown-ups in charge in Washington to say marijuana is not the kind of thing that ought to be legalized, it ought not to be minimized, that it’s in fact a very real danger.” He voiced concern over statistics showing more drivers were testing positive for THC, the active component in marijuana, in certain states.

Sessions further argued that a lack of leadership from President Obama had been one of the drivers of the trend toward marijuana legalization in recent years. “I think one of [Obama's] great failures, it's obvious to me, is his lax treatment in comments on marijuana,” Sessions said at the hearing. “It reverses 20 years almost of hostility to drugs that began really when Nancy Reagan started ‘Just Say No.’ ”

Marijuana : RIP

It's going to be very interesting to watch the feds try to enforce policy that both City Mayors and Police Chiefs have been clear they will not enforce.

Trump doesn't win popular vote, but wins election. Conservatives say it was a mandate.
States pass legalizing marijuana. Conservative AG says we need to go against the will of the electorate .

God, you guys won. You'll have all the power to make changes via the legislative, executive, and judicial branches. Can liberals at least have a vice to escape this crappy reality with! Please! Geez

Sen. Sessions also had some comments about immigrants from Dominican Republic in 2006 senate floor speech:
“Fundamentally, almost no one coming from the Dominican Republic to the United States is coming here because they have a provable skill that would benefit us and that would indicate their likely success in our society,”
“They come in because some other family member of a qualified relation is here as a citizen or even a green card holder. That is how they get to come. They are creating a false document to show these are relatives or their spouses and they are married when it is not so.”

To live in a world with Jeff Sessions as Attorney General is even more depressing than living in a world with Trump as president.

^^^^^ Keep a very close eye on Senators, Collins, Paul, & Flake during the confirmation process. I suspect all 3 names will receive considerable play during both the AG confirmation process, as well as the SC confirmation process. They're likely to wield considerable power during some of the more 'controversial' entanglements over the next couple years in a manner that many might find 'surprising'.

Quick question regarding the guidelines re: "Do Not Intentionally Post Fake News: ".

Totally agree with that.

So what's the policy of blanketly claiming that news that is reported is "fake" when those people don't like what is being reported?

(Serious question, not being flippant. There's been a trend of people claiming that reported news is either false, or is not what it appears).

Here here.

Great point. It seems like in general the country is getting more politically excited and aware and I think that is a good thing.

Sometimes in our country's past, the biggest societal changes came about through people becoming more politically aware and active.

Maybe that will happen again, I get the sense that the USA is at a bit of a crossroads as far as the future direction of the country and certainly the citizens getting more involved by voting and being engaged can only help in the long run.

Reddit and the God Emperor of the Internet

Anyone who uses Reddit knows about The_Donald subreddit, which was a big source of false news and anti Hillary spin. New York Times do a writeup here about it. Here are some of the more interesting parts:

Quote:
The_Donald has around 300,000 members. Some are conservative stalwarts, others are meme-making teenagers; all are anonymous, hidden behind user names, making their origins and motivations difficult to pinpoint. But it’s fair to say that many saw themselves as political outsiders who reveled in rallying for the underdog.

The community is home to copious Islamophobia, trolling of liberals and near constant bashing of Hillary Clinton. It has evolved a dialect decipherable only to insiders, which includes acronyms like “MAGA” (Make America Great Again); epithets like “God Emperor” (for Mr. Trump); insults like “cuck” (short for cuckold and often deployed against feminists); memes featuring a cartoon frog associated with racism; and nicknames like ’Pedes. (Centipedes, a term for Trump supporters adopted from a YouTube mash-up of the song “Centipede” by the band Knife Party and clips of Mr. Trump’s speeches. It might also be a (private man parts) joke. Seriously.)

Quote:
The_Donald’s policy states “no racism/anti-Semitism,” but it also warns “No dissenters or S.J.W.s,” as in social-justice warriors. “Concern trolling,” or questioning views expressed on the subreddit, is also banned.

The community is notoriously difficult to manage. Its top moderator team has turned over at least four times, according to Mr. Huffman. (This usually happened because the community revolted, as in one instance in which a lead moderator wrote that he believed he could get away with assaulting undocumented immigrants.) Moderators also suspend and bar members more frequently than do moderators of any other section of the site.

Its also been reported that they use bots to upvote the_donald posts to the front page for everyone to see. Videos would have more upvotes than views of the video or article itself.

Quote:
The community’s power soon reached beyond Reddit. Mr. Trump tweeted out memes and videos that originated on The_Donald and in July he participated in a popular Reddit “Ask Me Anything” discussion, after his team communicated with the moderators.

This would make little sense if The_Donald were all memes and derision. But according to Reddit, The_Donald’s moderators — nearly 50 far-flung volunteers — deftly managed to channel action out of the chaos. They hosted an extensive and at times informative Wiki about Mr. Trump’s policy proposals and instructed supporters how to help with the campaign. Members often suggested strategies for arguing persuasively against opponents.

Quote:
Perhaps most important, members organized an effort to comb through the Democratic National Committee emails released by WikiLeaks over the summer. In order to interpret and disseminate these documents, The_Donald relied on a network of subscribers it (adoringly?) named “weaponized autists.” Of particular fixation were emails from the Clinton campaign chairman, John Podesta. In a debate in October, Mr. Trump said to Mrs. Clinton, “John Podesta said some horrible things about you.”

One of my biggest frustrations as a daily reddit user, seeing that sort of nonsense at the top page, even though mostly it was just madness. Couple this with the fact that there were a lot of pro-trump twitter bots posting 4 times as often as pro-Hillary it muddies any sort of constructive political discussion.

If you're ever bored and want some free entertainment, and want to look into the echo chamber of echo chambers, read some of the comments on their posts at reddit.com/r/the_donald

That's my rant, I'm glad the message board is back. Hope it works out for everyone. I appreciate a lot of the discussions you've all had.

I've been looking at the_donald for almost a year. Literally every talking point and/or false claim I've seen propagated by Trump supporters (including all of the garbage posted on this forum) I saw on that subreddit first.

In general, as with any opinion or argument, someone should back up their claim with evidence. Likewise, if you believe someone is wrong, then you either ignore them or you provide evidence to disprove their point, but you never attack them or call them out for having some kind of agenda. If you believe they are trolling, use the report feature and then move on to other posts.

The mods can't discipline posters just because they are uninformed or haven't done their due diligence. Hopefully those posters would use this forum to educate themselves and, where they can, also educate others. They would certainly always have the opportunity to do so just so long as they don't violate the other guidelines listed.

Melania and Barron Trump won’t be moving to the White House

Future First Lady Melania Trump and son Barron will not be moving to the White House after Donald Trump’s inauguration in January, The Post has learned.

The president-elect’s 46-year-old wife and their 10-year-old son are staying put at the family’s glitzy Trump Tower penthouse so that Barron can continue attending his Upper West Side private school, sources told The Post.

Those living in the vicinity of Trump Tower are in for a huge lifestyle change. Melania and Barron are not going to the White House when Trump moves in. Trump says they won't move to Washington until he finishes school.

That source said also that there is a possibility that Melania and Barron may move to the White House at the end of the school year, but no plans are in place.

Barron is 10, that would put him in the 4th grade. If he remains in New York that means SS will be on two fronts. In essence there will be 2 White Houses.

He may never get to Washington.

I find myself hoping that Romney ends up as Secretary of State. That's where I think we are; that's just the reality of the current state of affairs.

No need to get into what his and their reasons might be for this decision, but it is logistically impossible for Trump to live in Trump Tower, in terms of his ability to run the country from there and security issues. I suppose his wife and son do not need to be with him though.
