I've been meaning to post this for a couple of days. Brian Fallon (former aide to Hillary Clinton and Chuck Schumer) wrote a thread on twitter about what kind of candidate is needed in 2020 to beat Trump.
Basically the problem is in a one-on-one situation, Trump sucks up all the oxygen and the press gravitates to him no matter what he says or does. The more outrageous and obnoxious he is, the more attention he gets. If his opponent tries to give policy speeches, the media thinks "boring" and trains it's cameras right back on Trump.
The only way to flip the script from 2016 according to Fallon, is to have a new, dynamic Democratic candidate who is unique and charismatic in their own way to create a universe separate from Trump that is as equally compelling to the press (and public) in a different way. He doesn't name names, but the implication is that someone like a Beto would have a shot, but that a generic plain vanilla politician has almost no shot. Fallon was on Chris Hayes talking about this last night and he said it has to be someone that excites young people and the multi-cultural base of the Democratic party. My interpretation is that he means another Obama-type with star quality, charisma and inspirational. I think even the Senators we talk about, like Booker or Klobachar have been around long enough to be a known quantity and therefore not sexy enough for the national media to get excited about.
He gave an example from the 2016 campaign. After the convention, the Clinton campaign did a bus tour of the midwest swing states (the one's she was accused of not visiting enough) about how a new economy could create jobs in the rust belt and help the middle class and working class. Meanwhile Trump started attacking the gold star family and latino judge, and even though the attention on him was negative, the media covered that and not Clinton's rust belt policy tour. Clinton campaign had a dilemma. Do they get sucked into responding to Trump's racist attack? Do they ignore? How do they get the press attention back? It was difficult. It was a trap.
That's why he thinks the next candidate has to command an equal and opposite universe of attention so they aren't always competing with Trump's next outrageous maneuver.
Anyway, read the thread if you have a chance. Here's the link: https://twitter.com/brianefallon/status/1062569660313464832 | its so sad we have to play the charisma game. because we voters are so...surface when it comes to our candidate choices. just shameful.
But its true.
So lets put up the list:
Beto
Gillium-something about this guy and it aint cause he's a brotha. there's literally something special about him. It took me awhile to even take a look at him since I heard about him from floridians.
CL's favorite ...Bernie
Kamala Harris...maybe (she's kind of straight to the point no BS. but a lot of people dont like that.) I guarantee you she would end up with the mean black woman label.
Warren?? nope. policy is there but charisma... not so much.
Actually right now at this very moment the winner would be the youngin:
Senator Ocasio Cortez |

Don't know why you guys here have a thing for the Democrats.
The Democrats are better off focusing winning more seats in the Senate and House of Representatives in 2020. Let a lameduck candidate like Pocahontas run for 2020 Presidential election. 2024 is their year. The country is changing and leaning towards the Democrats. Hillary had a good chance in 2016 and blew it. The GOP have nobody to lead before or after Trump. _________________ (❍ᴥ❍ʋ) ʕʘᴥʘʔ (⌐ ͡■ ͜ʖ ͡■) (┛◉Д◉)┛( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ༼;´༎ຶ ༎ຶ༽ |

It's so sad that lakersground holds posters to a higher standard than the Republican party holds the President of the United States.
And it's not really a high standard to begin with. _________________ "Every hurt is a lesson, and every lesson makes you better” |

Same ol' Jodeke. Always begging the question.
Remember 2015, when all those GOP dudes announced running for president prior to Trump announcement. We all knew Hillary was going to win the Democratic nominee and be running in the 2016 election waaaaay before. With all those GOPs, there was no chance of any of them winning against Hillary. Until Jeb Bush came along and became the front-runner and led the Republican polls but not that much with the likes of Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio. Still, Jeb would have lost to Hillary in 2016. Then, the next day, Trump announced he was going to run for president and he pretty much buried Jeb Bush. It just shows you that that the GOP have no good future prospects then and now like the Democrats do. _________________ (❍ᴥ❍ʋ) ʕʘᴥʘʔ (⌐ ͡■ ͜ʖ ͡■) (┛◉Д◉)┛( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ༼;´༎ຶ ༎ຶ༽ |

You ask this dumb f'ing question as if you intend to entertain an honest answer, as if you're not going to simply troll anyone who might pity a hopelessly unrehabilitatable ex-con enough to explain why the "both parties are the same" platitude is wrong for the billionth time.
The democratic party wants people like you to be able to vote in elections even after they were dumb enough to get caught and convicted for stealing hubcaps 6 times. Because that's a false premise, a false equivalency, and a really bad troll. I mean this in the kindest, most sincere way possible -- bring something better than that, or GTFO. You already have one strike against you for throwing out the racial slur. Tread carefully in here, because we're not going to wait for the third strike.
None of this is to imply that we won't welcome a sincere dialog with a rational, evidence based and sourced representation of the other side's position. We're just not holding our breath any longer waiting for someone who is actually capable of bringing that to the table. Instead we get the vapid BS that you came here with. |

Once again the prez is a genius!!! Everybody grab a rake and get to that underbrush...
Of course trump has the rake for the sand trap at the 17th green of his golf course
...and I call dibs on the rake at the World Series of Poker
...it's getting bad. When I see trump speak the tune from the Mounds commercial pops in my head..."Sometimes you feel like a nut...Sometimes you don't" and I turn down the volume...no joke |

Can anyone in this thread make a cohesive argument for conservative economic policy in 2018 America? Even if you're just playing devil's advocate.
Just wondering if there is a cogent argument to be made. Because fiscal conservatism is often portrayed as the more moderate part of the GOP platform. As opposed to their social, environmental, and foreign policy. _________________ "Every hurt is a lesson, and every lesson makes you better” |
