The red states are positive that if they make an anti-abortion law appealing enough for the Supreme Court to take the case, that SCOTUS will overturn Roe v Wade. But first people have to bring lawsuits against the individual states (either the ACLU or individuals). Usually the law will be stayed until it works it's way through the courts. So right now, theoretically, women in these states with new anti-abortion laws can still technically get abortions (they may have to drive 500 miles and jump through 10,000 hoops, and pay out of pocket, and endure a waiting period, etc).

Court watchers think SCOTUS in general (mostly John Roberts) is content to eat away at the margins as they have been doing by upholding smaller state laws that restrict abortion but don't repeal. Kavanaugh and Gorsuch are gung ho to overturn. So it depends on what kind of case SCOTUS picks to rule on. They have enough votes to overturn Roe v Wade now (5 men vs 4 women - irony much?). Then it would be up to individual states to protect women in their state. However, if SCOTUS does an extreme ruling like the personhood laws where a fetus is "ruled to be a person" and therefore all abortion is murder, then not sure states can overcome that. Elizabeth Warren has multiple polices that would have Congress make Federal law mirroring Roe's protections which would stand (she says) even if SCOTUS repealed.

It is thought that Roberts might take it upon himself to be the swing vote instead the automatic conservative vote in order to balance his legacy. I'm not sure you want your claim to fame to be setting back all the women of this country by 50 years. But who knows.

While the past courts are loathe to overturn prior rulings and rely heavily on them as precedent, the Supreme Court can overrule previous rulings if it wishes to. Cases are decided because the court has decided them, and another court hasn’t decided to reopen them, not because there’s any legal prohibition to do so.

And this is why 2018 was so important (stopping the legislative onslaught), and 2020 more so. And the senate matters a ton.

Democrats need to learn about the importance of SCOTUS like Republicans have. Especially lefties and other ideologically pure idiots who voted 3rd party or abstained from voting entirely in 2016.

Yes. This is why they are OK with Trump. They plan to pack the courts and then preserve their minority majority in perpetuity. This is why we must understand the rules. Win. Then take actions to reverse their actions. Then move the other direction.

There was a reason women were marching in historic numbers the day after Trump's inauguration. We figured all this (bleep) out on election night and have been in emergency survival mode ever since. Women marched. Women formed grassroots activist groups. Women registered voters. Women worked their asses off to make sure Democrats retook Congress in 2018. Women will power the 2020 election and now they have some extra added incentive with the war on women being taking to def-con levels.

And honestly, this is why it eats away at me that we don't have a women president NOW, and that everyone assumes a woman can't beat Trump. It's (bleep) galling. But I will swallow my rage one more time and vote for Biden if that's what it takes.

But women are fed up with this (bleep).

Oh please . . . it's not about "political expediency" and you know it. The only "expediency" in play is making sure that Trump gets stopped in 2020. Because if he isn't, he and GOP will continue to erode the Constitution to a non-factor. You can't fulfill a "duty" to something that doesn't effectively exist anymore. And if you want to talk about political expediency, nothing says that more than posturing about political appearances and doing things because they feel morally correct.

Defeating Trump and reigning in the GOP is the constitutional duty we have right now. Not sitting on a high horse trumpeting about ideological obligations (pun unintended )

It’s absolutely about political expediency. If you are too worried about getting elected in 2020 to do what is right, then that’s what you are doing. Nobody knows whether it will be good or bad for Democrats come 2020, there are legitimate arguments on both sides about the impact of opening up an investigation for impeachment.

The framers of the constitution created this mechanism specifically for this situation. The electorate gets to pass judgment on the President every four years, and we will do so regardless in 2020, but if you believe that the president is abusing his authority and undermining the democratic process, that his continued tenure in office poses a threat to the republic and that it can’t wait until the next election, then Impeachment is the mechanism to take care of it.

For people on either side of this argument, it comes down to how bad you think Trump is for America. Can it wait until the next election? If you think it can wait, then presumably you either think he isn’t sooooo bad that it requires immediate action...or you think he is that bad but you are too worried about the political ramifications of going through with the process on the next election. (Aka, it’s not politically expedient.)

As more and more damning evidence against @realDonaldTrump comes into public view, it becomes clear why he is hiding information from the American people and blowing off Congress. If Congress cannot gather evidence, we need to seriously consider an impeachment inquiry.

I too will swallow my rage and vote for Biden if that’s what it takes, just as I swallowed my rage and voted for Hillary. (My rage comes from a different place than yours.) Anyone who is against the neoliberal policies that have dominated our politics since Reagan and Thatcher will have a similar rage if Biden is the nominee. Progressives are fed up with this (bleep) too!

He voted for Trump because he didn't want women to have access to abortion. They deported his wife.

LAT: He voted for Trump. Now he and his wife raise their son from opposite sides of the border

Quote:
Forced apart by President Trump’s stringent immigration policies, Jason Rochester and Cecilia Gonzalez have spent the last 16 months raising their 6-year-old son from opposite sides of the U.S.-Mexico border.

Like so many separated families, the couple have experienced the years of Trump’s presidency as a grim journey of restless nights and tearful goodbyes. But unlike many in their predicament, Jason voted for Trump.

He knew Trump planned to get tough on immigration — building a wall and deporting drug dealers, rapists and killers. He never imagined anyone would consider his sweet stay-at-home wife a “bad hombre.”

Quote:
After a year of dating, Jason proposed. They got married in his uncle’s backyard. Then came Ashton. Cecilia gave up her job cleaning hotels and settled into life as a stay-at-home mom in this affluent Atlanta suburb, making Ashton pancakes and grits for breakfast and taking him for strolls to the local park.

“You’re not a criminal,” Jason tried to reassure her. “You don’t have to worry about it.”

Jason had faith that the Trump administration would distinguish between good and bad immigrants. Cecilia had never even gotten a traffic ticket.

“In my mind, bad hombres were people who did bad things,” he said. “We figured that he was going to get rid of the people we didn’t want.”

So he voted for Trump, assuring himself and his wife that the ultimate decision was in God’s hands.

Quote:
An independent voter who leans conservative, he voted for Barack Obama in 2008, hoping he would fix the immigration system and make it easier for Cecilia to pursue citizenship.

But this time, immigration was not his main concern.

Jason listened to conservative Christian radio, and his favorite talking heads, like James Dobson, the evangelical psychologist who founded Focus on the Family, convinced him that electing Trump would lead to a Supreme Court that would overturn Roe vs. Wade, the landmark 1973 decision legalizing abortion.

Quote:
It was Jason’s first time in Mexico and he was shocked by the poverty of her hometown. Stray dogs roamed the dirt roads, and mosquitoes buzzed inside homes with no air conditioning or drinkable tap water. Locals ran tiendas inside their rundown homes.

Unbelievable to him, there was no McDonald’s or Walmart.

Until then, Jason had not really grasped why his wife took the risk of crossing the border for a better life.

But God wanted his family to be together, he felt sure. Eventually, immigration officials would consider that Cecilia was married to an American citizen and had a child in the U.S.

“Mommy will be home soon,” he promised Ashton.

Not long after Jason got back to the U.S., their attorney told him Cecilia was permanently barred from returning.

It should not have been a surprise — Cecilia had lived in the U.S. for nearly two decades after being caught twice illegally crossing the border — but Jason was crushed when the lawyer said there was nothing more she could do. They would have to wait 10 years before they could ask for permission to reapply to enter the country.

Only in the authoritarian Trump world can you have a witch hunt composed of 18 (or 17 or 13) angry Democrats, which somehow still completely exonerates him, even though the whole thing was treasonous and we need to investigate the investigators, but they will try prevent anyone to testify about the thing that completely exonerated him. The authoritarian mindset abandons logic. I tried for a while to argue with those people online and in my own local community that is heavily pro-Trump, but it's as if they abandoned reason in 2016. Nothing gets through. They simply resent/hate anything they identity as the enemy, and "owning the libs" is all they live for.

From a few pages back:

Quote:
Annie Lebowitz believes naked racism is behind Trump’s election. “He allowed people to express their racism and bigotry in a way that they haven’t been able to in quite a while and they really love him for that. It’s a shocking thing to realise people love their hatred more than they care about their own actual lives. The hatred – what is that about? It’s a fear of your own weakness.”

Deutsche Bank employees reportedly flagged suspicious transactions involving Trump and Kushner
Tammy McFadden, a former Deutsche Bank employee, said she reviewed transactions that involved Kushner's company and Russians in the summer of 2016.
May 19, 2019, 11:53 AM PDT

Quote:
Anti-money laundering specialists at Deutsche Bank flagged multiple transactions involving Donald Trump and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, from 2016 and 2017. Those specialists recommended the activity be reported to the federal government's financial crimes unit, The New York Times reported Sunday.

But top executives at the global financial giant rejected that advice, current and former employees told The Times.

The transactions that came under review "set off alerts in a computer system designed to detect illicit activity," five current and former Deutsche Bank employees told The Times. Those transactions were then reviewed by the bank's compliance staff, who prepared suspicious activity reports that they felt should be sent to the U.S. Treasury Department.

......In 2016, McFadden reviewed a series of transactions involving Kushner's real estate company, Kushner Companies, that were flagged by the bank's software system. McFadden told The Times that she found that money had moved from the real estate company to Russians and felt the transactions needed to be reported to the Treasury Department — particularly as Deutsche Bank had come under intense scrutiny for its involvement in Russian money laundering schemes.

But bank managers in New York felt McFadden's concerns were unwarranted and did not send a report to the federal government, employees told The Times.

Then, after Trump became president, an internal anti-financial crime team reviewed the president's transactions and "produced multiple suspicious activity reports involving different entities that Mr. Trump owned or controlled," three former bank employees who saw the reports told The Times.

They aren't stopping with abortion. Next the self-administered abortion meds, then they'll come for birth control.

CNN: Online abortion pill provider ordered to cease delivery by FDA

A European organization that provides doctor-prescribed abortion pills by mail is under order by the US Food and Drug Administration to stop deliveries.

The federal agency sent a warning letter to Aid Access this month requesting that it "immediately cease causing the introduction of these violative drugs into U.S. Commerce."

They are trying to say it's for "safety" concerns. This is Christian Sharia Law, folks.

His over the top escalation and warmongering is apparently in response to this:

Washington Post: Rocket lands near U.S. Embassy inside Baghdad’s Green Zone

Quote:
BAGHDAD — A rocket landed inside Baghdad’s fortified Green Zone, which houses the sprawling American embassy, Iraqi security officials said Sunday, in an apparent warning shot to the United States amid escalating tensions with Iran.

The rocket landed less than a mile from the U.S. Embassy near Iraq’s parliament building and caused no injuries or serious damage, a security official said. But the timing of the launch has increased worries in Iraq that it will be drawn into a conflict between two of its closest allies, the United States and Iran.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but suspicion among Iraqi officials and Western diplomats fell on one of the Shiite militias that draw their strength from Iranian support. Last week, the State Department took the extraordinary step of ordering all nonessential staff to leave the embassy and consulate in the northern Iraqi city of Irbil, citing an alleged threat from Iranian proxies in the country.

Shiite militias with deep ties to Tehran have gained unprecedented political and military power over the last three years and have repeatedly used rocket launches toward American diplomatic missions to express their displeasure with U.S. policies.

Late last year, several rockets fell harmlessly near the American embassy in Baghdad and the American consulate in Basra during a halting and acrimonious government formation process in which the United States tried to thwart Iraqi militia members from shaping the nation’s cabinet following elections in which they gained the second most seats in parliament.

Not just that, he is literally an unindicted co-conspirator to a crime. And also he can obstruct if he *thought* he (or his moron son) committed a crime (say, asking the Russians for assistance). The fact that he's being defensive about obstruction is evidence itself that Trump knows the Muller report is bad to him.

There's nothing like a little wag-the-dog on the day when NYT reveals your money laundering crime family is about to be exposed through actual bank records and the first Republican calls for your impeachment.

Or as Trump tweeted in 2011:
