So a bunch of Republicans criticize him on the issue of Syria, and doesn't attack anyone. Hmmm.

But I think he'd be attacking them if they criticized him on Ukraine or other important issues to the base. He thinks he can survive this politically as we will move on to something else and Republicans in the Senate can simultaneously pretend to be serious people on foreign policy. This works out well for both sides.

But if the Syria thing escalates, it might have an effect on support for impeachment.

If ONE Republican criticizes him, like Romney, he responds. But every Republican politician (except Rand Paul), even the morning crew at Fox & Friends and the evangelical pastors are criticizing him for not protecting the Kurds (and in effect helping ISIS). He can't attack back individually because there are too many.

BUT, Senate GOP still won't be upset enough to convict on this one thing. Everything together (UkraineGate, Syria, Obstruction, Economy, Tariffs) would have to send his Republican voters support tanking to under 50% support within the party before GOP Senators would even consider convicting in Senate trial. But we may get there, you never know. I've said a million times that there is the possibility of a critical mass moment that spirals this thing in the a negative direction for Trump. We may see that tipping point, but we're not there yet.

I'm not holding out any hope for Republicans to suddenly gain a sense of duty. I take it back, I have a tiny shred of hope that so far seems completely irrational. If Republican voters can express their displeasure and it becomes clear the Republicans will have a massive defeat in the Senate if they don't impeach...then maybe it happens. It sounds implausible just writing it down.

Two Weeks In, Impeachment Is Becoming More Popular

Quote:
And based on polls released on or before Sept. 19 (before the Ukraine story broke open), support for impeachment initially sat at 40.1 percent, and opposition was at 51.0 percent. But that began to change after we learned more about the scandal. And now, as of Wednesday, Oct. 9, the polling consensus is clear: Impeachment has gone from fairly unpopular to a near-majority opinion.

According to [the 538] average, 48.8 percent of people support impeachment, while only 43.6 percent don’t support it.1 That’s an increase even from last week, when the share of people who supported and opposed impeachment were roughly the same.

Empahsis mine.

Trump just dismissed worries about where currently captured ISIS fighters will go if they escape since they'll be going to Europe.

This is insane.

The popularity of impeachment is kind of besides the point. Until it reaches a point where it is well above 60% just within the ranks of the Republican Party, it's going to be a non-starter. We wouldn't be where we are if just a majority overall was going to have an impact.

It's just becoming numbing at this point, and as time goes by, the numbness grows. What was unimaginable even a couple of months ago is now par for the course - and it's on an exponential curve t this point.

I agree with you. And look at what's happening. Even if somehow you didn't care about the humanitarian crisis part of this for the Kurds, it's deeply hurting U.S. national security interests as it relates to ISIS...

When asked if we had betrayed the Kurds, he said that Kurds didn't help us in Normandy during WWII.

That's what he actually said.

What strikes me as weird is how quickly Turkey invaded after Trump mentioned that he was abandoning the Kurds. I don't care how well you plan something out in advance, it takes weeks to organize the troops and invade a country. Even if you assume that the military objectives with time tables were predetermined, and the logistical support well-planned, it still takes time to execute an invasion plan. There are too many last minute changes in enemy troop concentrations or placement, and time has to be given to prepare an organized, well executed thrust with multiple fighting units, all of which require coordination. Think about how many months it took the US to get started in their forays, even after landing the troops and establishing the support. And believe me, the Pentagon spends considerable time and energy on prepping in terms of objectives, time tables and logistics, even before the first troop transport plane lands.

This is something that has absolutely escaped the attention of the press as well.

Good stuff, ap. Also, can anyone comment on this...

The other thing about impeachment is that it’s not really 67 votes. The GOP has a senate majority. Trump can’t be impeached AND have a majority of the senate including Republicans vote to convict and THEN BE THE NOMINEE. So McConnell has to hold 51 senators. He can’t right now.

Michael Salfino

@MichaelSalfino

So the way this is going to work is that either McConnell holds 51 GOP senators (losing no more than two and Romney is gone) or the floodgates open and Trump is removed for a nominee who doesn’t have the baggage of a majority Senate conviction. This will happen overnight.
