What Dem candidate do you guys think addresses Trump's base the best? What candidate minimizes the power Trump's base has in 2020 and beyond?

Cause I can see the argument for Biden and Pete. They are both moderate. They talk about returning to the more unified America that directly predated Trump. And they are white men (which is a requirement for Presidency among Republicans).

But I also see how progressive policy can address the "populist" issues Trump tapped into. And that conservative media will pretend a moderate Dem is just as extreme as a progressive.

I would guess Yang because he most captures the aura of "the outsider", and that was impressive for many of the people who decided the election. It would also largely diffuse Trump's best (only) argument in debates and on the stump that his opponent is a swampy, corrupt, super-connected career pol who can't be trusted. It's hard to imagine what he was would even say against him other than the standard accusations of socialism which you can pencil in for every candidate.

Yeah, but when they hear his UBI policy, they'll say he's even more of a "commie".

Ken Starr, who has defended Trump throughout this episode, is now saying that Republicans might be preparing to visit the White House to force a resignation.

Now, I don't think that's gonna happen. I think Starr is trying to save whatever reputation he has left and not continue defending the indefensible. We might see similar things from other commentators since they don't exactly depend on Trump to continue their careers. Cowards like Graham from very red states might stick with Trump because that, as of now, will ensure their political survival.

My boy Mayor Pete seems to be doing well in Iowa and New Hampshire! I'm still not sure that he can win the nomination without African-American support, where he is lagging big time, but maybe if he wins the first two contests, that can change a little bit. He and Biden seem to be the two moderate candidates that are doing the best, so if Joe's campaign flounders, maybe Pete can pick up some of Joe's moderate support and some of his African-American support.

A long way to go, obviously. I'm guessing that Pete is the one that gets attacked the most at tomorrow's debate, given that he seems to be the one with the most momentum right now.

Good points.

Someone on twitter analyzed the internals of this poll and it looks like college educated voters are overrepresented in the sample. Which doesn't mean that Buttigieg isn't in the lead there, but maybe not by 10 points.

Mayor Pete might want to stop using stock photos from Kenya for his African American outreach stuff, and definitely stop fudging his list of Black endorsements.

Wow. Jackie hits all the points, at least the two I've been waiting for anyway: speaking in code and that it is Russia who benefits from the delay in funding.

Even if they did, Trump would flip them the bird. He's way too proud and arrogant to resign.

He also knows it's a legal death sentence. Neither Trump nor most of his Senate and Congressional supporters have anything to gain by caving.

Nunes acts like no one is watching TV, reading newspapers, and reacting to what we've been hearing for the last few days. He keeps talking about conspiracy theories and some guy named Chalupa. He keeps saying the Republicans can't get their own witnesses and aren't allowed to participate, and Schiff keeps repeating that Nunes is not telling the truth, and Nunes just sits there and repeats the same (bleep) in his next opening statement, as if it hadn't been pointed out to him that he's full of (bleep). They're willingly embarrassing themselves to support Trump. It's a freaking cult. It's because they know Trump's fans are eating it all up.

Yep. A cult fueled by Trump News . . . I mean Fox News.

Sondland played Congress, but clearly is a fool. He managed to give both sides something, but mostly he did enough to keep Trump clean on any direct discussions.

5 minutes on impeachment. It's treated like just another issue. They all gave unsatisfactory answers on it. "Corrupt," "pathological liar," "criminal." Wouldn't be the first corrupt, lying, criminal in politics. None of them frames it as an existential issue, as one where our democracy, our institutions, our standing in the world are at stake. These candidates have to show more passion and explain the seriousness of this better.

I like all the women except Tulsi. Kamala & Klobuchar making decent points. Warren not given much time except for opening riff on taxing rich and healthcare.

Biden seems really really old. Sorry, no.

Bernie is Bernie. Sorry, no.

Yang, Steyer, Mayor Pete and Booker are okay.

Too bad Julian Castro didn't make the cut. I'd rather him than Tulsi on stage.

While all of that may be true, the problem is that it's not having a huge impact on the race. With the exception of Harris received a temporary bump after one of the debates, it seems that these debates are having no impact. The more we have them, the less interest there is.

Sorry to be cranky but listening to Bernie yelling at me and Biden lecturing how he practically invented every Democratic policy since the beginning of time is like nails on chalkboard to me. And that was on top of listening to Gym Jordan yelling and Devin Nunes lying foolishness all day.

So Biden's first line of his closing statement was a swipe at the other candidates and a blatant reminder to everyone, "HEY, Remember that Obama guy? I worked with him!"

Not to mention there's nothing wrong or counter-productive with seeing more of these candidates speak their viewpoints.

If nothing else, it helps ensure we all might find the candidate that fewer people feel they have to hold their nose to vote for.

She seems to be on the verge of tears with every word, too. The shaking might be mitigated if she pinned her hair back. It's uneasy to watch.

I thought Kamala Harris, Cory Booker & Amy Klobuchar had strong showings. I liked Steyer's point of bringing in new voters (like in 2018). I'm glad Pete took a shot at Gabbard who doesn't even belong there. Yang always has a couple of good moments. Biden was alternately cringe worthy and tiresome with his reference to Obama policies. Warren said the same stuff she always says in her stump speech and ditto for Bernie.

I feel the same way. Those two seem to have the least ability to evolve and remain intriguing.

Booker says Buttigieg has no black support in the South in the post-debate interview. Kornacki then shows a poll and Booker doesn't even register at all among African-Americans in South Carolina. He's at 0% there. No better than Buttigieg.

Booker and Harris were clearly trying to appeal to black voters. Biden is still very strong among that demographic, though he had a made a stupid gaffe tonight.

I'm guessing no major changes after tonight.
