The theoretical most typical, expectable, average American. It’s not a real person. Are you misunderstanding what I’m saying? How could that be a specific person?

No misunderstanding. It's just that you are creating this "average American" in your head. You can't actually describe them, because they don't exist. If they did, they'd be living in CA and would probably be a Lakers fan. And by your account, most Lakers fans are Left leaning.

What exactly is inappropriate about Howard over the last decade? He's a pretty good interviewer of high profile people. He's still self-serving and often simplistic, but the days of having porn stars and drunk midgets (RIP Hank) are long gone.

I heard about his pc conversion, but haven't actually listened in probably 10 years. Are Richard and Sal still employed? It's hard to believe they could be doing anything appropriate.

Insightful.

It's long been established that you don't have the remotest concept of what "far left" means. So your idea of what constitutes the average American view point is moot.

just being real with you, but I think you struggle with the spectrum. I feel like you view things on the California scale of right to left, but that is not similar to the overall American scale. I live and operate everyday in a deep purple state, and I rarely am ever in a room where it is all Republicans, Democrats or Independents. Most LG users in this thread are clearly farther to the left than the middle, and it is not close.

wow, I mean that smear is over the top about Harris....who would ever go that low? What is next, someone going to call Mayor Pete a NCIS Agent!

You make huge assumptions, which inevitably lead you to huge miscalculations. You have no idea what my extended family is composed of. It's a group that literally covers the political spectrum and has all the nuances in between. There are aging Republicans, a few die-hard Trumpsters of various ages, several that would shock even you as to their "lefty" mentality. More importantly, there is a large collection of "average Americans" - small town Midwesterners, evangelicals, blue collar workers, plenty of military both active and retired . . .

So I am well versed in the array of American viewpoints and where they "average" out.

Nice try. My point is clearly not that being a cop is a pejorative. It is obviously that some people have foolishly tried spin her career as a prosecutor into one.

Anyone who thinks the "California scale of right to left" is any different than that of the rest of the country has either never been here or never looked around while they were here.

I've always found the psychology of Trump voters and why they love him to be facinating. I've firmly felt for a while that some, but not all of them are racist, and that there are different types of Trump voters/supporters.

I found this on my FB feed, and I posted it verbatim. Just thought I'd share it to see what my fellow progressives/social democrats think:

Quote:
HOW I FEEL ABOUT TRUMP: By Steve Harvey

You've been on vacation for two weeks, you come home, and your basement is infested with raccoons.. Hundreds of rabid, messy, mean raccoons have overtaken your basement.. You want them gone immediately!.. You call the city and 4 different exterminators, but nobody can handle the job.. But there is this one guy, and he guarantees to get rid of them, so you hire him.. You don't care if the guy swears, you don't care how many times he's been married, you don't care if he has a plumber's crack, you simply want those raccoons gone!.. You want your problem fixed!.. He's the guy.. He's the best!
Here's why we want Trump: Yes, he's a bit of a jerk; Yes, he's an egomaniac; but we don't care!.. The country is a mess because politicians suck, the Republicans and Democrats can be two-faced and gutless, and illegals are everywhere.. We want it all fixed!.. We don't care that Trump is crude, we don't care that he insults people, we don't care that he's been married 3 times, we don't care that he fights with Megyn Kelly and Rosie O'Donnell, we don't care that he doesn't know the name of some Muslim terrorist.. This country became weak and bankrupt, our enemies were making fun of us, we are being invaded by illegals, we are becoming a nation of victims where every Tom, Ricardo, and Hasid is a special group with special rights to a point where we don't even recognize the country we were born and raised in; "AND WE JUST WANT IT FIXED”.. And Trump is the only guy who seems to understand what the people want..
We're sick of politicians, sick of the Democratic Party, sick of the Republican Party, and sick of illegals!.. We just want this thing fixed.. Trump may not be a Saint, but we didn’t vote for a Pope.. We voted for a man who doesn't have lobbyist money holding him back, a man who doesn't have political correctness restraining him.. We all know that he has been very successful, he’s a good negotiator, he has built a lot of things, and he's also NOT a politician, NOT a cowardly politician.!.. And he says he'll fix it.. And we believe him because he is too much of an egotist to be proven wrong, or looked at and called a liar.. Also, we don't care if the guy has bad hair.. We just want those raccoons gone, out of our house, NOW!!!
You are welcome to copy/paste/share this.. Thousands of people who haven't voted in 25 years seem to be getting involved.. And the more people get this message, the more that will understand why Trump was elected..The raccoons have got to go!!!

It's an authoritarian ideology of resentment.

What struck me about that post is the dehumanization of immigrants. Trumpism can only thrive if there is a perception that enemies - immigrants, people of color, liberal elites, people on the coasts, etc. - are taking what rightfully belongs to Trump's tribe. Pundits keep wondering why Trump's rallies don't focus more on the economy and some of the policies he has implemented. But that's not motivates those people to keep supporting Trump. What primarily motivates them is the hatred and he constantly reminds them which groups they need to hate.

But considering the history of this country, none of this is a surprise. It took Trump to unleash it to its fullest potential. Fortunately, it's a minority of the country, but a minority was enough to take over the government.

It’s a bad, over simplistic analogy, but ok, let’s go with it. The generous interpretation: Not only is that guy you hired not going to get rid of the raccoons, but while he is banging around at things while claiming to get rid of them he is weakening the very foundations of your house to the point where it’s going to end up costing you a lot more, and that’s if your house doesn’t fall down. At some point maybe you’ll realize...gee, maybe we hired the wrong guy to fix this “problem”.

Except in this case the exterminator is an incompetent boob who makes a bigger mess in the basement while managing to kill off a few, he lies and tells you he did a perfect job, overcharges you, then steals your family silver on the way out the door. When you call him to ask him about that noise in the basement he tells you you're hearing things and to ignore because he did a perfect job!

Also interesting that the person used "raccoons" and "infestation" as examples. This is racist horsecrap in thin disguise. So yeah, they can tell themselves it doesn't involve racism but it's right there in the example. Immigrants are infesting the country and Trump hates them as much as they do and they just want them gone even it means destroying their own home.

There is a spectrum of political views in America. I’m referring to the center of that spectrum. Maybe median would’ve been a better term than average. Obviously, there is nobody who is the literal average of every other American. I didn’t say anything about Lakers fans but I think it’s a fair statement to say Lakers fans tend to lean left because the team is from LA, a very liberal city. Do you find that controversial?

I didn’t say anything about Lakers fans but I think it’s a fair statement to say Lakers fans tend to lean left because the team is from LA, a very liberal city. Do you find that controversial?

No, I think this forum is an indication of a more left-leaning Lakers fan base. But California represents America probably better than any other state. Highest % of military members, biggest Agricultural state, most immigrants, tech hub, retail and service industry, tourism..... rural, urban and suburban residents.

Didn't "the average America" vote for Hillary more than Trump? And help the Democrats take back the House in 2018?

If we're talking about the median political view. I'm still not sure how that shakes out. Considering Hillary beat Trump by millions of votes and 40% of the voting eligible didn't vote.

But I do believe the right has effectively pulled the Overton Window to it's side over time. I mean they've spent a decade trying to destroy Romney-care because a black President made it into law.

The bolded screams, "when people who don't look like me are protected from prejudice it pisses me off!"
Also I'm sure he's patting himself on the back for alluding to the racial term coon several times but having plausible deniability that he chose a random pesky animal.

Yes but Trump got enough votes to win the electoral college. Considering the level of hatred for Trump on here, I’m not sure how you can actually believe the average American hates him to that level yet he still wins the presidency.

I read a good quote on American's who are attracted to authoritarians, that I think define Trump fans well: "A misplaced sense of grievance, lack of empathy, ignorance, and lack of historical perspective".

From day 54 of his presidency till now day 1050. His disapproval rating has been above 50%. His approval hasn't hit 45% through that time period either.

So it appears the median is not a fan of his presidency (like us in this thread).

If the electoral college was truly proportions. 1 electoral college vote = X number of people in a state. It would be a good measure for the median voter. But it doesn't. It based on the amount of representatives and senators. Which isn't proportional to state population.

I never disputed that. There are various levels of “not a fan of his presidency” and the level on here is higher than most of the country. You really can’t even admit that? Is this the only place you discuss politics?
