Warriors … Again… Three starters out for the Lakers as Young joined Randle and Russell on the IR. On the good news, it took three quarters this time to give up 80 points to the Warriors instead of a half.

In fact, they were battling and keeping the game within reach despite being undermanned early on. If it wasn’t for some self-inflicted wounds with unforced errors, the Lakers might have been even with the Warriors instead of trailing 53-43 at the half.

They could have cut it to 10 points with about 4 minutes left in the game. That was about as close as it would get, however, as they were just out-talented and had too many miscues. But the game was much closer than the final 109-85 loss would indicate.

“We played hard, but we didn’t play hard and smart tonight,” Luke said. “Obviously having three starters out and having to play guys out of position and big minutes made the challenge more difficult.”

Luke shuffled the lineups with combinations we haven’t seen, but the Randle, Young and Russell trio throw a lot more punches than their replacements. It would have been a much more interesting game with them on the floor…wouldn’t have surprised me if they came away with their third straight home win again Golden State.

Glad to have the Warriors off the table now until late in the year.

Clarkson -- -- JC slid into the starting lineup with Nick Young now sidelined. Luke also arranged his sub patterns so that he’d have Clarkson still rotating in with that good bench unit. He sank multiple three’s in this game and he also had multiple steals (5), some just being in the right place as passes were thrown to him, some good rotations and activity. “Good job by the coaching staff putting us in those situations,” Clarkson said. The -27 he was on the court was painful. Obviously, there’s a lot that goes into that, but for JC’s part just some horrendous passing decisions at times (even the turnovers didn’t tell the story because I think we recovered a couple of bad passes that messed up scoring opportunities). I’m not sure what’s going on with him in that regard because he hadn’t looked this awful with the ball movement in his first couple of seasons. “We’re shooting it when we should be passing and passing when we should be shooting,” Clarkson said. That about describes him. On the break tonight he had a couple of bad ones in the first half trying to team up with Deng, but giving him the ball way too late. Those are killer 4-point switch variety plays. So that made some of his offensive efforts again clunky as the ball didn’t move or didn’t move well too much at times. Needed his 20 points, for sure, and others to step up but there were some challenges on the court. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 6-15 shooting (4-9 from three, 4-5 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 5 steals, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 38 minutes. He was a -27. The Action: He missed a three curling off a screen. He missed a floater (thought he had Mozgov open on a lob). He sank a catch-and-shoot three straight away, able to step into it. He missed a sideline three on a kickout. He lobbed to no one on the break, not sure if that was for Deng or what, but it was awful. Out of control on the push out and he threw the ball away, unforced error really as he dribbled himself into trouble. He was fouled on the throwdown attempt, he made both FTs. He attacked across the lane and threw it up expecting a whistle and it dropped in. He drew FTs on a wild finish attempt in transition, he made one. He backed a man up, picked up his dribble like he was going to pass, the D sagged off and he drained the three. He turned the corner and threw it away, right to Steph, who missed a breakaway dunk. He missed a wing three. He missed a pull-up 16-footer. Awful pass on the break, giving it to Deng way too late, surprised it wasn’t a turnover. He had 11 points on 3-7 shooting, 4 steals and 3 turnovers without an assist. Second Half: He attacked right and didn’t hit rim on a wild pull-up jumper. He took an outlet pass, great angle on Durant to draw contact, then he flipped in the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He iso’d and missed over Curry, no ball movement that time down court. He missed a three straight away. He drew an offensive foul on West in the post. He sank a wing three off the handoff. He missed a wing three. He missed a step-back fade at the FT line. He missed a wing three.

Ingram -- -- Welp, we’re leaning on him more with others out and he’s getting some shots up. Frankly, that’s fine by me, especially in games like this that will be tough to win. He struggled with the shot, unfortunately, going 1-10 in the first half. “I thought he played a really solid first half,” Luke said despite the poor shooting. A lot of attempts at the rim, also, where he really has issues. I don’t mind getting him bulk shots, though. He needs as many as he can get to become more comfortable at this level. He needs reps and time. Awful shooting night, for sure. He made up for some of it, though, being active on the boards, getting 9 in a team-high 39 minutes. He had the play of the game early with a rejection of Durant from behind and then a subsequent outlet to Deng for the breakaway score. Crowd loves seeing big plays from him. The Stats: He scored He scored 8 points on 3-18 shooting (0-4 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 9 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 39 minutes. He was a -18. The Action: He rejected Durant from behind, tracked it down and outlet to Deng for the breakaway dunk. He missed a corner three. He missed a three in transition. Another nice challenge on Durant on iso. He attacked off the three line, took contact and couldn’t finish. Ref said the ball was out on him when it clearly wasn’t, turnover. He swished a pull-up 18-footer. He was short on a wing jumper out of a busted play. He missed a pull-up in the lane, good move, though (impossible to guard when he has that much space and length in the lane). He attacked off the three line, wild drive that shouldn’t have been that hard and he missed. He cleared teammates out, posted up Klay and drew FTs on the turnaround, he made both. He attacked the paint couldn’t finish, better looking drive and he nearly had a putback. He attacked and missed a short one (should have taken the jumper). He had 4 points on 1-10 shooting and 7 boards. Second Half: He iso’d and was stripped by Zaza. He up-faked, moved in, hesitated and hit the wing jumper. Out of a timeout, he was stripped in the backcourt for a turnover. Bad angle on D and he gave up a layup. He attacked baseline, faked back one way, then finished the layup the other way over the help D. He missed a baseline pull-up jumper. He missed a corner three on iso. He swiped a post entry pass to get a stop. He missed a big wing three with 4 minutes left that could have cut it to 10. He crossed over, spun and missed a fade.

Mozgov -- -- Luke went to smaller lineups as the game went along trying to dial up something. Some savvy moments on the court, including a nice ball fake and drive, as well as good pass to teammate ducking in under the hoop. He missed a couple of FTs tonight, but that was as Billy Mac but the jinx on him with “one of the best shooting big men you will see from the line” comment. He stood no chance off that. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-6 shooting (2-4 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 20 minutes. He was a -20. The Action: He sank a 15-footer coming off the screen. He scored an easy lob on the drive from Calderon. He missed a jumphook. He drew FTs on the defensive glass, he missed both. He spotted Robinson ducking in under the hoop and hit him for the layup. He missed an off balance jumphook. He ball-faked, fooled the D and attacked for FTs on the dunk attempt, he made both. He stepped out to space the floor, took a pass with the shotclock low and quickly fired and hit the sideline jumper. Second Half: He threw a pass into Ingram’s legs on a cut, turnover. He missed the short one-hander.

Deng -- -- Paging Luol Deng, you’re wanted on the court. Obviously other have to step up for the Lakers to have a chance against this team shorthanded. “Nick and Julius bring more energy than anyone,” Luke said of those losses. Deng certainly doesn’t fill that void…which is unfortunate…and I’m sure the Thanksgiving turkey probably didn’t help, either. Luke certainly kept Deng’s minutes in check, looking for more out of his deeper bench players than his starter gave him. The Stats: he scored 4 points on 2-9 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 4 boards, 4 assists and 1 turnover in 22 minutes. He was a -16. The Action: He took the outlet from Ingram and dunked. He crashed the offensive boards and hit Calderon for the open three. He missed a wing three. He was blocked on a drive. He missed a wing jumper behind a screen. He traveled on the perimeter, unforced error. Second Half: He missed an easy, open wing jumper, short as usual. Excellent baseline cut to take a pass and score at the rim, but he gave it back on the other end not switching when Mozgov picked up his man. He missed a wing three.

Calderon -- -- He had a bad sequence in the third quarter with back-to-back turnovers for scores at the rim the other way that buried the team by 18 points at the time. That’s not exactly the vet savvy play from him. When we have no room for errors, his 4 turnovers are especially painful. Defensively, he did better in this one. In fact, he had a great block on Curry after chasing him around screens. That was an impressive effort. Just needed a much cleaner offensive game from him. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-6 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 1 board, 6 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 4 turnovers and 4 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a -18. The Action: He swished a wing three off a kickout. He lobbed to Mozgov for the easy score after getting penetration. He blocked Curry chasing him off screens, just an excellent defensive effort. Second Half: He missed a wing three on our first possession of the half. He threw a pass into Mozgov’s shins, turnover. He missed a leaner in the paint, then whacked Zaza in the head. He swiped a ball and outlet to Clarkson for the breakaway score. He was picked by Curry for a layup the other way. He then had his pass picked off for a dunk next time down, that sequence forced a timeout. He scored a breakaway layup uncontested. Calderon again on the breakaway next time down and his layup was goaltended. He missed a wing three.

Williams -- -- We needed a stellar game from Lou instead of an average one to make up for the losses in firepower. One of those 25-point outings where he carries the team. He missed all of the threes he took and never really got it rolling like has been. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 5-13 shooting (0-4 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal and 4 turnovers in 26 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: Horrible, horrible lob pass on a 3-on-1 break, turnover. He probed and hit the runner in the paint. He took it coast to coast in 5 seconds but couldn’t finish at the buzzer. He set up Nance for the dunk. He lost the ball on a drive next time down. He missed a wing three. He traveled on a drive. He attacked off the high screen and hit the runner. He was blocked on a drive but we recovered it. He pushed out in transition under control and scored the layup to his right. He had 6 points on 3-6 shooting. Second Half: He attacked the paint and couldn’t finish in a crowd. He swished a wing jumper (and looked fouled). Way short on a runner. He threw a pass out of bounds trying to hit Nance. He missed a corner three. He missed a three in transition. He drew a reach and FTs, he made both. He hit a floater in the lane. He attacked next time down and earned more FTs, he made one. Just letting it fly, he missed a deep three.

Nance -- -- On whether he should start: “The second unit didn’t feel like it would work when they have Draymond and KD out there at the 4 or 5,” Walton said. He also wanted Deng to space the floor so Green couldn’t help off him so easily. Active game from Nance and it showed in the stat sheet. He passed up a couple of jumpers he probably should have taken and hesitated on another, so it was a little more like last year in that regard. Some weak touch fouls and reaches. Wish we could see a little more anchoring out of him and some shotblocks like this summer. Overall, if you can get a game like this from Nance to be average, that’s what you want. Rod man was at the game. Wish he could teach Nance to hit the boards like him. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 5-8 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 1 steal and 4 fouls in 20 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He missed a tough jumphook with the clock low. He didn’t take the corner three, allowing the D to catch up and we turned the ball over. He grabbed a blocked shot and put it back in. He swished a midrange jumper. He dunked off the drive and dish from Lou. He was fouled off the bounce pass from Black in the paint, he made one FT. He had 7 points on 3-4 shooting and 5 boards. Second Half: He attacked to his right and hit the runner. He scored a layup off the drive and dish from MWP. He missed a tough pull-up against the shotclock. He missed a 17-footer off a jab-step. He kept an offensive board alive and it led to FTs.

Black -- -- Great job on the offensive glass as he had 4 of the 14 offensive boards. Those helped make up for the low shooting percentage. Some troubles defensively with Durant when those two matched up. As athletic and mobile as Black looks, he’s not uber-quick defensively with the footwork and that was a tough match up. Still love the effort on the glass and once again at the line. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 2-4 shooting (4-4 from the line) to go with 5 boards (4 offensive), 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 foul in 17 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He pulled a board down and reset the offense. He was blocked on a short one after a good up-and-under move. He missed a baseline jumper. Nice interior bounce pass to Nance for FTs. Second Half: He battled to pull away an offensive board and hit the jumphook. He grabbed a miss by Williams and was fouled on the putback attempt, he made both FTs. He attacked and hit the jumphook next time down. He sealed his man under the hoop but missed the easy And-1 layup attempt, he made both FTs.

Huertas -- -- Some bad passes in this one, even if the stat sheet didn’t quite show that. He just never really got into any rhythm offensively. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-3 shooting to go with 3 assists, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 12 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: Awful pass on the two-man sequence, easy score the other way. He missed a floater. Second Half: He missed a baseline pull-up. He was blocked out of bounds on a layup.

Robinson -- -- He had 7 boards in 7 first half minutes, showing the activity we need to see from him. That got him more minutes in the second half. He also had a really nice cross-over to beat Zaza off the dribble for a layup as well as a steal and breakaway dunk in the fourth. Some difficulty finishing on a couple of plays and he didn’t hit his FTs, but this was a quality outing from him. “There’s some points I left out there that I’m not so happy with,” he said. We had a super small ball lineup with an Ingram and Robinson front court. It would be nice to see him get some minutes in the next one, if possible to see if he can keep the activity going. “Ten rebounds in 15-16 minutes is no joke,” Nance said. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-8 shooting (0-2 from the line) to go with 10 boards (3 offensive), 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: Great reaction on help D when the Warriors had a mismatch in the paint and he swatted the shot. On the other end, he ducked in around his man and Mozgov found him for the layup. He missed a putback dunk he should have had. He fumbled away a finish attempt. He was blocked on a layup and wanted the goaltend. Second Half: He faced up at the elbow, crossed over Zaza and scored the layup. He slapped the ball away once, then twice, this time recovering it and taking it the distance for a dunk. He attacked a crowd and was blocked (probably should have been a jumpball). He attacked to his right and missed a layup. He skied between a couple defenders to pull down an offensive board and earn FTs, he missed both.

World Peace -- -- He came in to cover Durant late in the third quarter. Then we brought back in Ingram to start the fourth. He had a nice drive and dish. The Stats: He had 1 assist in 3 minutes and was a +2. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He rumbled in off the dribble from the wing and dumped it to Nance for the layup.

Walton -- -- Shorthanded tonight, but the team put up a much better effort… Kerr with a quick timeout after the Lakers got out to a 5-0 start. Guess he remembers the last two home games here against us… Lakers up 12-10 when Huertas and Nance came in for Calderon and Ingram… A 13-0 Warriors run… Lou in for Clarkson, Black in for Mozgov… The Lakers trailed 30-20 after the first quarter… Black, Nance, Ingram, Clarkson, Lou lineup… Lakers down 14 when Robinson and Mozgov came in for Black and Nance… Deng in for Ingram, Lakers down 11… Down 9, they forced a timeout… Calderon in for Lou… The Lakers cut it to 3… The Lakers trailed 53-43, which isn’t bad considering how many self-inflicted turnovers they had. They had 12 turnovers, but 10 more rebounds… Calderon with a couple of bad turnovers for breakaway scores and the lead stretched to 18 when Luke called a timeout… Ball movement awful. Clarkson out for Lou and Nance in for Mozgov… Lakers down 20, Black and Huertas in for Ingram and Deng… Metta in with under 3 minutes left, down 18… The Lakers with 5 turnovers in the third… The Lakers trailed 80-64 after three quarters… Black, Nance, Ingram, Clarkson, Lou to start the fourth… Robinson, Ingram, Clarkson, Lou, Calderon in… They trimmed the lead to 15 and forced a timeout with 5 minutes left. A steal and dunk by Robinson cut it to 13… That’s as close as it would get…

Great to read DB's detailed analysis and breakdowns while I am traveling outside of the country

With a short-handed team, could one start wondering where the veteran leadership from Deng (the highest-paid Laker) will start showing itself on the court? If Deng's positive influence and impact is not seen when DLO, Randle and Young is not on the court with a Deng playing PF - when will he show up.

Maybe Big Game James is right, Deng is the most effective on a veteran-laden team that needs one extra leader to go to the next level. His production last season with the Miami Heat might be very helpful for a contending team that could bring back invaluable high draft choices or young players. With his role on the team closely related to Ingram's development, one doesn't expect the Lakers to do anything would jeopardize his development - at least this season

DB and GT - what are your thoughts?

JC is a very talented player if not asked to do things consistently what his strengths are that doesn't include being a productive PG (at this time)

Thanks DB.
Missed the game due to family stuff but from your summary, looks like I didn't miss that much!
Pretty tough for our young team to face the Warriors with three of our starters out and keep it as close as they did.
Oh well, on to the next game and hope our guys heal fast!
