Here is a list of some of the more popular players' verticals in the NBA. The sources are pretty reliable, most are from NBA.com, but they may not be correct. Everyone hears differently about player's verticals, so it's always hard to know for sure.

Vince Carter - 43"

Steve Francis - 43"

Antonio McDyess - 42"

Allen Iverson - 41"

Rex Chapmann - 39"

Kobe Bryant - 38"

Shaquille Oneal - 32"

Lamar Odom - 32"

Karl Malone - 28"

Retired Players

Michael Jordan - 48"

Spud Webb - 46"

Dee Brown - 44"

Harold Miner - 44"

Dominique Wilkins - 42"

Larry Nance - 40"

Julius Erving - 41"

Shawn Kemp - 40" (before he got fat)

Ralph Sampson - 36"

Magic Johnson - 30"

Other High Verticals (Non-NBA)

Michael Wilson (Globetrotters) - 51"

Reggie Thompson (Jumpsoles) - 53"

Ronnie Fields (CBA) - 48"

Melvin Levett - 45"

Randy Moss (NFL) - 51"

Jevon Kearse (NFL - 265 lbs) - 40"

- 40"
Brandon Dean (NCAA - Arkansas) - 39"
Desmond Mason (NCAA - Okla. St) - 38"

High Jumpers that Visited my Page

Kadour Ziani (French Exhibition Dunker) - 56"
Ant (Sky's the Limit Creator) - 41"
AirWhitey (MADUPS Creator) - 41"

Just not true. Kobe is at his athletic peak. He chooses not to do the hang time stuff because it is often a detriment to one's game, as well as a health risk. Kobe can still get up with the best in the game, when the situation dictates.

I dont know, I argue with myself about that. Has Kobe lost some of his leaping ability or whatever (or maybe flashy ness? But I do miss the old high flying Kobe dunking on everyone. The only good dunk THIS YEAR that I know of is the windmill against the Hornets.

"just not true" should be your signature.

Kobe is still w/ the elite as far as athleticism but he isnt as explosive or as nimble/agile as he used to be.

Kobe is stronger and just as athletic. He's put on probably 30 pounds of muscle since he won the dunk contest. Factor in 10 NBA seasons pounding on those knees...

The example by KobeFTW is one I'd like to use to repeat what I've already said.

Example - it said Jordan's is 48".

Now it's entirely possible Jordan jumped 48" at one time (seen/heard second hand) , or jumped 48" at one measurement. But remember 48" is like what, 6" over the rim?

However, his as a rookie he was measured with a 43" vertical. Anyone whose followed Jordan as a rookie read about this in the Chicago papers and all the hubub about how high he could jump and how high off the backboard he was touching in practice.

In the same token, I've seen Kobe's block of Eddy Curry, and that looked like at least a 40"+ jump, given how high Kobe's hand was and what we know about his reach (hand was around the top of the backboard square), even though we hear official measurements anywhere from 36-38".

We've had this debate for ages. I remember in high school our vertical was measured as the highest in 3 attempts against a graph on the wall. Usually, it got higher and higher as people pushed themselves more or got more used to jumped against the wall and stretching out. The methods of measurement aren't perfect.

Finally, isn't this thread kind of a my c*ck is bigger than your c*ck thread?

Does anyone know where to find the athletic test results from this past draft in paticular?

Also, does anyone know kobes verticle leap and allen iversons? or the overall athletic tests from both when they were drafted?

Past draft? Only what ESPN Insider released. They only released specific numbers.

As to info about AIs and Bryant's athletic tests, those things were never posted on the net. Results didn't really hit the internet until roughly 2 years ago.

But, I do know AI's vert. is higher than Bryant's. My question is, why the interest?

also a side note isnt their some draft prospect from next years draft that got a 50 inch vertical, hes a pg not sure of his name.

Nah. Kobe's is not that high. His vertical leap is actually not that high compared to other two guards in the league, but freaking high compared to the rest of the world... I heard his vertical was in the 37-38 range....Not the mid 40s......I believe VC has like a 42-43....Nate Rob probably is about 43 as well....

Jumping is one thing, but skills is another...

Harold miner can jump, but he sucks.

vc has hit 47 before his injury... jr smith has a 46

Good post. Looks right to me.

I wonder what LBJ's is.

Vince seems to get more air than Kobe, but not by much - so that makes sense.

As for LBJ? I know part of it's his height but DAYUM he gets the ball high up over the rim when he puts it down.

There's just no way Jordan's leap was 48". He was 6'8", so a 48" (4 feet) vertical would mean his HEAD would get to 10'8", or 8" above the rim. I've seen a lot of his dunks in his prime, but I've never seen him get even 3 or 4 inches above the rim.

Most of those numbers are pure (bleep). Very few people in the NBA have their standing verticals over 40''. Imagine, Josh Smith, an athletic freak, has a vertical of 39.5''. JR Smith is at 35.5'', Hakim Warrick 38'', Iguodala 34.5'', Nate Robinson 43.5'' ... I can't remember Wade's numbers, but he was in the 35'' area. Those numbers are from the official predraft camp and we can surely say that Kobe was never more athletic than likes of Iguodala and JR Smith (they are both long and 6'7'' with shoes on, which is comparable with Kobe's stats) , who are both fantastic leapers in their own right, let alone someone like Josh Smith. Kobe is a fantastic athlete, but he was always more of a quick athlete than an explosive one - I'm not saying his explosivness wasn't elite, he just isn't/wasn't a freak of nature. He is a very fluid athlete, which is what it counts, and - like someone before said - he doesn't have any weaknesses athleticism-wise.

1. Jordan was more like 6'4-3/4"
2. 48" Vert. NEVER accounts for a player jumping standing up straight.

No, Jordan was 6'6 or around there. Not 6'4 or 6'8.

^Basketball cards and other various things lie. Yeah, MJ was listed at 6'6", but really, 6'4-3/4" w/o shoes.

Ever look at Pippen and wonder why he looks more than 2" taller than MJ when they stand next together?

So are most players shorter than listed, and if so how tall are the following NBA players:

Shaq
Kobe
Nate Robinson
Allen Iverson
LBJ
Magic

I bet Larry Bird was 6'9''+ without his shoes on. Standing next to Magic, he looks at least an inch or inch and a half taller than Johnson.

I met AI at D&B in Philly (I've seen him there a couple of time)... I definitely think he's below 6'... more like 5'10' and half, 5'11"... I was actually surprised by how small he looked (if you can call 5'11" small),.. but the kid this barely 160lbs...

I was a year younger than Kobe when he got drafted and I recall the buzz.

IMO many people already knew he was talented. I think many questioned his maturity and whether his body was NBA ready.

West called it the best workout ever.

People have told me Andrew Bynum got the Laker's attention the exact same way. Impressing them trumendously in workouts ...

I bet of Philly had to it all again - they go with Kobe. So do a host of other teams in the draft ..
