In 2011, YES, in 2016 NO.

That ship has sailed.

I would rather keep Ryan West here and get Jerry back.

I love Phil and thought he was a great coach, but time has moved on and we are all set with the FO at this time.

Can't we just give him a ceremonial position?

Director of Triangle Research.

NO.

When will Phil just retire? He has so much ego my goodness. I don't want him back in any role even though I think he could be a beneficial consultant. I don't want the risk. Just retire Phil..come to LA..live on the beach..smoke that medicinal and just chill out.

I like Phil more than most people on this board, but I'd only be OK with it if, as vlf said, he was a consultant or the man setting the general vision, and Mitch was still the main man as far as making acquisitions and executing the game plan. I know Phil has his flaws and that many here despise him as a human being, but I've read about him behind the scenes and realized that he has a good heart beneath all that ego and office politicking. He has some gravitas that could help with FAs, and besides, as he himself once said, Luke Walton is his son.

Give him Jim's job when Jim stays true to his word and resigns.

Why? Other than drafting the best available guy by default in Porzingis (who was being considered higher), what has Phil done in NY that would make him the pick?

The Knicks are doing OK right now, especially in the last couple weeks. You gotta give an executive a couple years when he takes over a bad team before you can expect results. Much like how Mitch needed a few years to prove that he's a solid GM.

Mitch won a title his first year as a GM.

This article is a fugazi.

Both franchises are happy with their current direction. Both are competing for playoff spots for the first time in years.
Don't think any change is imminent. For either franchise.

Maybe give him a second project analyzing the difference between nylon nets and peach baskets.

Or he can be the team's Director of Medicinal Marijuana.

Uh, I give the man his due. He was a great coach, and his greatest gift was not x and o, but his management of ego and personnel. Masterful. Easily in the goat conversation for coaches.

But what works as a coach is not necessarily what works as an executive. In fact, it is often quite the opposite. And nothing in his coaching resume, nor in his actual foray into being an exec, gives credence to him being a master at that job. Quote the opposite.

Btw, it is quite feasible to be a great coach in an era and then have that era pass.

Some good points here. There is a place for Phil as far as bringing legitimacy to the Lakers front office. That applies to potential free agent stars (I am convinced Lakers are planning a run at Cousins this offseason).

If I were Phil, I would have gone for the Cavaliers HC job. Perhaps Phil thought this might cement the naysayers who condemn him as 'only winning because he coached the best players'.

How can the Lakers make a run at Cousins in free agency when he won't be a free agent?

The only reason Phil would wind up here is if Jeanie cares more about her relationship than the state of the Lakers going forward in the right direction.

The Buss voting block has already said no to Phil once, now that the team is on an upswing, I doubt they change that decision.

Arguably, Phil's greatest accomplishment as the Knicks head BBALL guy is to help the Cavs win a championship. Basically gave JR Smith/Shumpert to them for free.

It could still work with or without Phil if you have the most talented team in the league.

Phil and the triangle would have Golden State or Cleveland contending for a title. Of course they are both contending for the title without Phil and the triangle. But if he was with Golden State or Cleveland, the media would be saying he is the reason for their success.

I want this Laker's team to move on to the future, away from past eras and create its own identity. Phil carries too big of a shadow and we don't need that drama.

No to Phil. He undermined his head coach a few games into the season by naming Rambis "defensive coordinator". Ridiculous. Phil comes back to the Lakers, next thing you know Rambis will be the "co-head coach". Phil really wanted to give Rambis the Knicks job last summer but he knew the players and NY media would run him out of Dodge if he did that.

That sounds like what Dr. Buss wanted to do with Riles and West. The terms Doc used were "Coach" and "Offensive Coach". It was all about the O, in 81, not D. Excellent post as always, CC.

The only thing Phil has done truly well is draft KP which I think he really didn't get AF once D'LO and Jahlil were off the board-- his people just made the right call. The rest has been questionable with some really bad mixed.

I honestly don't understand how anyone can want to bring him in at this point. The expression, "turned the corner", well that' finally happened. We're on the way up and it's exciting.

Jeanie said she expected to see excitement, results and progression.. well, she's seeing that now. If she were to remove Jim and/or Mitch in favor of Phil, it'd be the snakiest move I've even seen from an owner.

If the idea is to bring him him as a consultant or some other BS position, then i guess it can't hurt to hear his perspective. However, if it's anything more than that, then hell to the nah. That said, I would rather bring in Jerry West as a consultant.
