Learning To Win… Luke had one goal for the team this year – it was to compete every night. They’ve won more than a few games they weren’t expected to this season by digging in and never giving up.

They had 9 turnovers in the first quarter, giving up 14 points of those. Just an awful start on the heels of last night’s poor outing. They cleaned up the turnovers in the second quarter, locked in and chipped away at the lead, evening things up at halftime.

They kept things close in the fourth quarter, locked down and took it down to the wire. There’s no way they should win a game with 24 turnovers, but they dominated the boards, outrebounding the Bulls 60-46. They were led by Julius Randle, who pulled down 20 himself.

It was a board he couldn’t secure that nearly cost them. Randle was fouled on a defensive rebound (hit in the head from behind and held) with no call, the Bulls got the ball back and made a three to tie it up with 1:30 left.

Randle would score a big bucket with 45 seconds left, attacking, spinning and going off glass. They got a key stop on the other end and held the line for the 96-90 win. Their first win this season when they didn’t score over 100. They’re growing up.

“Held them to 90 points,” Randle said immediately afterward. “That’s great for us.”

A night after they lost Nick for a couple of weeks and couldn’t hit a shot, they responded to Luke’s game plan defensively. Great job giving Butler a variety of looks on D to keep him from getting comfortable.

“Our defense was the best it’s been all year tonight,” Luke said.

Randle -- -- Beastly game from Julius. He was locked in on the boards and on D. Some of his rotations defensively late in the game and challenges on switches show you the potential of what we want from him on that end of the floor. When he’s focused and the pressure is on, his effort level increases. I think that bodes well for the playoffs in his career. The Bulls are excellent rebounders. Randle showed them so is he tonight. He tied his career high with 20 rebounds. Just think about that for a moment. Great energy and motor on the glass, battling all game long. “He was awesome,” Luke said, mentioning they wanted to take him off Gibson, but Julius wanted the match up. “Not only to say you want it but to go out and get 20 rebounds to back it up is impressive.” So all of that and we have yet to talk about the offense. He had a little trouble finishing at the rim at times but came up with the score of the night. With 45 seconds left, the game in the balance, he attacked from the wing, spun back to his left and scored off the glass. Just imposed his will on his man and on the game in a critical juncture. Manly effort from the now 22-year-old. “We can’t control if we make shots or not, but on the defensive end, we can control that, and our effort was phenomenal tonight,” he said. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 4-13 shooting (5-8 from the line) to go with 20 boards (9 offensive), 2 assists, 5 turnovers, 2 steals and 4 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: Bogus first foul as the ref thought he flopped and called him for tripping. He backed his man down on the other end and hit the fade in the lane. Quick spin but he missed the tough baseline pull-up. He overpowered Gibson on a drive and earned FTs, he made one. He missed a tip, got it back and powered in the layup. He blew a layup on the break. He was called for a charge in transition. He missed a short one backing his man down well. He tried to iso after pulling down a missed FT and fumbled the ball away on a dribble behind his back. Second Half: He missed a drive, a layup, got it back and was blocked. He attacked left and drew FTs, he made both. He drew FTs on the defensive glass, he made one. Quick attack off the catch, but he couldn’t finish in the lane or get his follow tips to go. Careless with a defensive board (he didn’t chin it) and was picked from behind for a three. He grabbed the Clarkson airball and powered it in. Nice challenge on Butler’s jumper on a switch. Excellent D to quickly double, then rotate back out and challenge a jumper on iso and we got a stop. He attacked from the wing, power spin to his left and he scored off the glass with 45 seconds left. He was fouled with 12.2 seconds left up 3, he missed the first and made the second.

Ingram -- -- He couldn’t hit a shot, but the kid can defend. “At the end of the game, Brandon was the one that really came into play for us, stopped Jimmy Butler, forced him into some tough shots and we all got the rebounds,” Clarkson said of his teammate. The Lakers switched a lot, blitzed him, doubled the post. “We wanted to switch up our defensive scheme so he couldn’t get comfortable,” Luke said. They did an excellent job mixing it up. “His length is a problem defensively,” Nance said. Love watching him battle on D. Luke clearly knew he needed him out there even if he couldn’t hit a shot. Ingram played 41 minutes tonight. Wow. Offensively, the shot wouldn’t fall. We had him bringing the ball up a ton, which wasn’t without a few sketchy moments as they tried pressuring him. His only field goal was on an excellent finish in traffic, something I expect will develop with experience and as he gains strength. He used his off-hand on that one, got to trust that more. “He’s going to be special when he goes to the hole and dunks those,” DFish said. “That’s when I know he’s got more hair on that chest.” The Stats: He scored 8 points on 1-9 shooting (0-2 from three, 6-8 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 3 assists, 1 turnover, 2 steals, 1 block and 3 fouls in 41 minutes. The Action: He missed a wing three off a handoff. He missed an elbow pull-up. He attacked to his left and couldn’t finish through contact (not using his left), he made both FTs. He scooped up a loose ball, threw it away, got it back and fired it down court to Clarkson for a layup. He threw a kickout away. He drew FTs on a perimeter reach, he made both. He missed a pull-up jumper. He was blocked on a reverse. He attacked the pressure D and was easily blocked in a crowd. He had a mismatch on the perimeter, attacked to his left and finished with his left for the And-1 (there you go!), he missed the FT. Second Half: He missed a wing three. He missed a pull-up 20-footer. He missed a pull-up elbow jumper. He was fouled on a three up against the shotclock, he made two FTs. Nice challenge on Butler on iso to get a stop (after we turned it over on the other end).

Mozgov -- -- Clearly he doesn’t understand how to make a post entry pass himself. He had a couple of turnovers on bad-angled post entries to other teammates. That helped him to a 4 turnovers in his limited time. You don’t want that from someone who doesn’t have the ball in his hands much. Ugly minutes. His only make was on a jumper on one of those inverse plays we’ve been running for him lately. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-4 shooting to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 4 turnovers and 4 fouls in 17 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He was called for a travel under the hoop. Bad angle on D and he gave up a layup. He attacked off the dribble and wanted the foul on the miss. Horrible angle post entry, turnover. He flashed out to the elbow and sank the jumper. Second Half: Another horrible post entry pass, right out of bounds. He attacked left and couldn’t finish a drive. He missed a lefty hook across the lane.

Deng -- -- A more acceptable game from Deng. He had some turnovers and missed too many FTs, but he actually contributed in this one on both ends, which has been rare. He seems to really struggle with the speed and the offensive system in general. It seems to put him into situations where he’s not expecting passes or not sure how to find his spots when he does have the ball. I’ll take a near double-double, but I’d like to see him put together two halves to a game. He’s had a few good first halves, but unable to follow that up in the next couple of quarters. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 3-9 shooting (1-2 from three, 3-6 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 3 turnovers, 2 steals and 1 foul in 24:32. He was a -12. The Action: Way short on a shot in the lane, he got it back on a scramble for the ball and scored the And-1 layup, he missed the FT. He attacked baseline and was blocked. He swished a sideline three on a swing pass. Nice challenge on a drive on the other end, but he then fumbled a dribble away and gave up a dunk. Short on a flat elbow jumper. He attacked and telegraphed a bounce pass, turnover. He wasn’t expecting a pass and fumbled it away. He choked a layup, traveling under the hoop before going up to score. He attacked off the weave and scored the And-1 layup over a big, he made the FT. He had 8 points on 3-6 shooting and 4 boards. Second Half: He pumped a man in air on a 19-footer and drew FTs, he made one, got his miss back, spun and drew more FTs, he made just one again. He missed a wing three, short. Great job fighting for a loose ball, but he then threw it away. He airballed a floater in the lane.

Calderon -- “Everybody was trying to put a body on somebody … and I think we did a good job against a really good rebounding team,” said Calderon, the only Laker not to get a rebound. He scratched out some points efficiently, which is what we need from him. He needs to be aggressive with the shot or the offense dies. He hit a couple of jumpers and had a nice And-1 drive for a score. We played him a couple of stints, limiting his time and stealing minutes, basically, before the second unit comes in. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-4 shooting (1-1 from the line) to go with 1 assist, 3 turnovers and no fouls in 16:31. He was a -16. The Action: His pass was picked off for a dunk. He sank a wing pull-up jumper off the two-man game. He threw a bad pass getting caught in the air at midcourt for no reason. Second Half: He swished a wing jumper to start the half. Herky jerky drive to his left, he drew contact and flipped in the And-1 layup next time down, he made the FT. He was rejected out of bounds on a probe off the high screen. He tied up a man for a jumpball. He dribbled into a double team and was picked.

Williams -- -- “This is an ego league,” he said, referring to Julius and the team wanting to rise up to the challenge after getting embarrassed by Butler and the Bulls at home. The Lakers were a +20 when he was in the game and a -16 with Calderon out there. The bench with Randle instead of Black closed the game out. Those guys are tough. I have a lot of confidence in them, but honestly, I really want the ball in Lou’s hands when the pressure is on. He had a couple miscues himself down the stretch (a turnover off his foot was a big one), but some great passes to teammates, as well, that led directly to scores. He did an excellent job getting to the line tonight, including a key trip there with 20 seconds left. Unfortunately, he made just one, which made things a little more interesting that they should have been. He didn’t shoot well, but at the end of the day it’s still 18 points on 12 shots. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 4-12 shooting (1-3 from three, 9-11 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 5 assists, 2 turnovers, 1 steal, 1 block and no fouls in 29 minutes. He was a +20. The Action: He took contact and sank a running jumper from the elbow. He setup Black for FTs on a drive. He missed a wing three, got it back and missed a reverse. He drew FTs on a corner jumper, he made both. He found Clarkson with a deep outlet for a layup. He sank a fade, going to his left. He missed a corner three. He broke up a transition lob. He missed a floater, got it back and missed another. He ran the clock, attacked to his left, got the reach and drew the foul for FTs, he made both. He scored 8 points on 2-7 shooting. Second Half: He probed baseline, drew the D and hit Black for the dunk. He swished a deep three on a kickout. Great feed over a turned head of a defender in transition, right to Black who scored the layup. He probed the paint and drew FTs, he made both. He split defenders and missed the tough runner (trying to get a whistle, I think). He iso’d on Grant at the end of the quarter and drew FTs on a reach from three with 1.4 left in the quarter, he made two. He somehow found Nance between defenders for the short one. He was stripped ion a drive. He couldn’t get a drive to fall. He hit a 12-foot runner working off the high screen. He accidently dribbled the ball off his foot, dunk the other way. He got tapped on a floater in the paint. He probed to his right, got contact into Rondo on the shot and drew FTs, he made one with 20 seconds left to lead by 3.

Clarkson -- -- Man, he had an awful start to this one, missing his first several shots and throwing in some bad turnovers. We got him some scores in transition off our D and that seemed to turn it around. “Tonight we came out and started on the defensive end,” he said, instead of letting the offense dictate the outcome for them. That’s certainly what kick started it for them. “All we talked about pregame was defense,” Luke said. Clarkson was also in on a key stop on Butler, leaving his man to try to challenge an open three and Butler airballed. Just a very strong game from Clarkson after he got over that bad start. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 9-18 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 4 boards, 3 assists, 3 turnovers, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a +13. The Action: He missed a drive after drawing a crowd. He lost a man on a pivot, attacked and missed the layup. He attacked left and missed a short one. He missed a pull-up jumper at the FT line. He got caught in the air in the paint and threw it away for a dunk. He scored a layup on a bustout off a Laker steal. Ingram fired an outlet to him for a layup in transition. Nice challenge on Wade to get a miss. He scored a layup off the long outlet from Lou. He outmuscled his man going to his right and scored the layup. He had 8 points on 4-8 shooting. Second Half: Way long on a good look from midrange. He attacked off the high screen and banked in the runner. Way short on a wing three off good ball movement. He lobbed to Nance in transition. He dodged a defender trying to take a foul and scored the layup. He attacked to his right, got a step and hit the layup. He knocked a ball loose from Wade but couldn’t finish the layup on the other end. He airballed a layup he should have passed but Randle cleaned up the dribble penetration. He missed a three up against the shotclock. He attacked, stopped on a dime, spun and hit the short jumper. Under control off the high screen and he pulled and hit the 14-footer with 1:50 left.

Nance -- -- “One guy goes out, the other guy has to pick it up,” Nance said of the team effort. Sometimes I think other teams get a little jealous when we bring Nance in off the bench. He’s the kind of guy every team wants and it only looks better when he’s hitting jumpers and finish at the rim. How much do you love Nance ripping an offensive board away, sending a man to the ground in the process and then scoring like he did tonight? He’s had some games where’s he disappeared earlier in the season, but he’s finding his way now and is really the heart of that second unit defensively. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-8 shooting (2-3 from three) to go with 11 boards (3 offensive), 1 assist, 1 turnover, 3 steals and 4 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +18. The Action: He battled for an offensive board and scored the And-1 putback, he missed the FT. He got a nice bounce on a 21-footer to drop in. He yanked an offensive board away from a Bull, sending him to the floor and powered up the layup. Second Half: He hit a floater in the paint. He finished the tricky lob from Clarkson in transition. He lost the handle on the roll to the hoop. He missed an open 17-footer. He was blocked in the paint, but ended up stealing the ball in the backcourt shortly later. He hit the floor for a loose ball and was fouled (probably why he was on the floor). He was fouled with 2 seconds left up 4, he made both FTs.

Black -- -- “Winning battles like that is a necessity for a team in order to grow into the caliber of team we want to be,” Black said, hitting the nail on the head. Asked how they win with all the turnovers, he said “Rebound the heck out of the ball.” Yep. He had some foul troubles, which limited his time. “I don’t even want to speak on it because we get fined if we say certain things,” he said. We went more with Robinson and Randle as a result and really didn’t skip a beat too much. Guys stepped up defensively. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-2 shooting (2-4 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 turnover, 1 block and 5 fouls in 12 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He threw a pass away, points the other way. He drew FTs on a drive and dish from Lou (should have made the layup), he made one. He grabbed a pass in the paint, attacked and drew FTs, he made one. Second Half: He dunked off the baseline drive and dish from Black. Nice awareness on a tricky pass from Lou in transition and he scored a layup. He picked up his fifth foul on a perimeter reach on a big and had to sit with a minute left in the third.

Robinson -- -- Really a perfect kind of game from him in terms of filling a role. Black had some foul issues, Mozgov wasn’t very effective, so Luke brought him in a couple of times and Robinson brought his energy and rebounding in limited minutes. He even had a nice score on a drive. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-2 shooting to go with 6 boards (3 offensive), 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 foul in 9 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He battled for a miss and reset the offense. Second Half: He passed up the 15-footer, moved in closer and hit the short runner. Nice challenge on a jumper to get a stop.

Walton -- -- Lakers down 12-7 when Clarkson came in for Ingram… He brought in Black for Mozgov, down 3… He brought in Nance for Randle and Lou for Calderon, down 10… Ingram back in with 3 minutes left to complete the second unit down 10… Ridiculously turnover prone early on… The Lakers trailed 28-17 after the first quarter… Some rebounding troubles just briefly. He sat Black for Robinson, Lakers down 9… Lakers in the bonus early in the quarter being aggressive (they would make 10-13 FTs in the quarter)… They trimmed it to 3 before Butler returned… Randle back in for Robinson… Deng in for Clarkson, Lakers down 4… The Lakers tied it up 47-47 at the half. Amazing after 15 first-half turnovers. The Bulls shot 0-8 from three, the Lakers 1-4. The Lakers had 8 more boards… Rondo hitting threes and Luke called a timeout down 5 after a 7-0 run… Clarkson in for Ingram, Lakers down 5… Black in for Mozgov… Williams and Nance in to have the bench plus Deng instead of Ingram… Full bench in down 6… Black with a poor foul on the perimeter and he had to sit with his fifth for Robinson, Lakers down 3… The Lakers trailed 73-70 heading into the fourth… They took a 1-point lead and forced a timeout. Butler back in… Randle back in for Robinson, Lakers down 1… Luke called a quick timeout with 4:13 left when he saw the team iso’ing down 1 (Ingram would earn some FTs)… Luke irate with a no call on Randle who was fouled on the defensive glass (that led to a big three by the Bulls)… Up 3 with 19.5 seconds left, need to get a stop. The Lakers came through…

First.

Thanks DB! Ugly as hell game but I'll take it. Ingram defensively was huge.

Been watching hoops for just about 30 years and I can't remember the last time I saw anything like that. It was beastly.

Was watching during class with the volume muted and I blurted out a "dayum"

Lol

Even with no sound, I could sense the tension in the last few minutes. Was great to watch and nerve wrecking while learning about policy implementation processes

Loved watching Nance literally and figuratively rip the balls off of Bobby Portis. Straight up emasculated him and left him lying in a heap on the floor as Nance scored the put back. Our bench is unrivaled right now.

Deng was absolutely atrocious in the first half. "more acceptable" are the wrong words.

He may have redeemed himself a little in the second half (though he still made at least half a dozen really stupid passes/moves), but that should not make us forget how absolutely awful he was in the first half

Maybe if Luke or the FO or whatever is so forced on playing Deng, maybe don't play him in the first half then? Put him in in the third. That's enough.

Black and Mozgov really struggled. The Nance/Randle frontcourt in the 2nd half was much more effective against Lopez and Gibson.

He was the primary defender on Butler for 3 quarters and did a good job holding him in check. Ingram only took the assignment in the late third and fourth, but Deng managed Butler well for the first three. A couple And-1s, a three in the first half and at one point was our leading scorer around the third quarter.

Yes, he had a bunch of completely bonehead plays like a lot of the team with the 24 turnovers. But he had some good stretches, especially holding the line on single coverage on Butler.
