Never had anything in NY that totally wowed me. But with so many choices there, I imagine that it's just that I haven't eaten at the right places, and not that everyone else is wrong. But I've been to both good restaurants and holes-in-the-wall that people rave about.

Chicago I haven't spent much time eating in, although I'll note that Rick Bayless is based there. I still do layovers at O'Hare whenever I can so I can eat at Tortas Frontega.

And oddly, I haven't spent that much time eating in LA. But I haven't seen much there that I can't get in OC. There's a Nobu there, maybe a few other places. I may prefer San Diego to LA.

Two of my favorite food cities in the country are Portland and San Francisco.

Thanks for the analysis Coon, I haven't been to the EC but I can tell that there food seems to get overrated a lot.

I have only spent an afternoon in NY, so I disqualify myself from commenting on it (though my two meals there were very good). I don't eat in LA much unless I am traveling for work, and then it is usually something for lunch. I have had some very good lunches while on the road, there used to be a really good soul food place on Imperial Highway. But I have spent more time in Chicago, so of the 3 choices offered that is the city I would vote for. Some great ethnic food all over that city.

None of the NYC steakhouses or Jewish delis did it for you?
Jackson Heights in Queens has an excellent selection of indian, nepalese, mexican and centroamericanos cuisines. Flushing in Queens are good for chinese, koreans and emerging filipino cuisines. Washington Heights in upper manhattan has some of the best dominican and carribean food. Then there's Brooklyn with its 'new' cuisine. The old french/Italian restaurants in manhattan are ok, name only in my book

Shouldn't LA be on the list of signature dish considering the Spanish food in the area?

No NY pizza?

Honestly, I've had better "NY style Pizza" in a few places outside of NYC. Just one mans opinion, but NY style pizza in NYC tends to be oversauced imo. (Escape from NY & Golden Boys in SF comes to mine as places with better NYC Pizza than NYC - but of course that's coming from someone that doesn't like what he thinks is 'oversauced'. Someone who thinks NYC pizza is perfectly sauced would likely disagree. And if they can't get their 'signature' dish nailed, then I have to leave it off my Top10)

I have obviously eaten in Los Angeles more than NY, and I've never been to Chicago. I think any time you have a sprawling, diverse city with vibrant cultural communities you're going to get great food. The idea that it's akin to OC or SD is crazy talk. Theres a massive difference between a city having a Thai restaurant and a city having an entire Thai community, with regional and geographically specific cusine being represented. It's tough to beat what LA can offer in this respect.

If you were going to say something was Los Angeles's signature dish, what exactly would it be? And is that 'signature dish' generally done better in LA than elsewhere? I'm at a loss for what that might be?

The korean taco truck was really good when I had it, only in LA I think but not sure it's a signature dish lol.

Wasn't Hawaiian pizza created in LA

LA has some AWESOME food trucks of all varieties, but again - I'm not sure just what I'd venture to call a Los Angeles 'Signature Dish'?

Tacos? Nope, San Diego, Albuquerque, & Austin has em beat.

Overall Mexican Cuisine? Nope, that prize would goto San Diego.

Burgers? Nope. Dallas & (Birmingham of all places) has em beat by a mile.

Los Angeles is the Crown Jewel of variety, but it doesn't really have a food that's 'identified' with it in the way other places have.

And while we're at it, since you mentioned 'Crust' - don't EVER eat a pizza in Wisconsin. I didn't think it was possible to screw up pizza, but they've somehow figure out how to pull off that trick. Just horrid!

Nah. Canadian Bacon & Pineapple was invented in Toronto!

IMO the quality of Chinese food in LA and SF is the same, just my guess...

Portland is really climbing up in the culinary world. I spent a few days there in 2015 and the food was exceptional. Lots of variety, I had everything from soul food to diner food to 5 star food.

I spent some time in Portland this Summer. You can eat very well there. Their beer and coffee put ours to shame. But while I had several delicious meals, there are few places I ate at there that get a lot of attention that would be pretty ho-hum in LA.
