Getting the 8th seed probably only allows 4-5 games in the playoffs, but it would be worth it for the young guys and the organization overall. That likely requires us to be looking to add a piece at the trade deadline, and probably not provide as much attention to the development of Ingram.
Seeking the bottom gives us the optimal chance at adding a top tier draft pick that may become "the guy" for the next two decades. It also allows the team to ensure Russell gets his knee healthy, and tons of attention of developing Ingram and Zubac. Finally, it would allow the team to seek young talent or assets through trades.
Staying on the current course, and winning around 30 games likely does little except set us up to win 37 games next year.
Pretty impossible to tow the line between chasing the 8th seed and tanking. That's why some teams make a concerted tank effort sooner than 30 games in.
Yet that is exactly what we are doing....we are not playing "win at all costs" nor are we focusing on everything but winning. It is not impossible at all, the Kings, Magic and others have did it for years. I think you have to pick one or the other.
Beyond Philly, most teams always make the decision to tank in the neighborhood of 30ish games in....It is the time where the sample is big enough to weigh the costs and benefits.

I'm saying the gulf between the 8th seed and ostensibly getting the worst record for tank purposes is pretty formidable. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals

unless we show that we can play .500 or above over our next 5-10 games, then I think I will have to fully support focusing on developing Ingram and Zubac, and sending Lou to a contender....aka tanking.

I don't think the FO sees it that way. They're probably going to "compete" until game 82 this year, even if that results in a poor record regardless. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals

i dont support tanking but if we get a crazy offer for lou, we should still pull it.

are you sure your not projecting your preference onto the FO's thoughts? Your probably right because their jobs are on the line.

I try to see it from the FO's perspective as much as possible. Yes, I think jobs are possibly on the line. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals

There is no #1 draft pick option to fight for. Those aren't the choices.

I love Lou but like with any other player, if you get a deal that you like you pull the trigger. I also don't see the FO throwing in the towel and doing anything to lose more games. It was one thing when we had Byron baby sitting Kobe and had an out when Kobe was gone, but they didn't hire a young coach like Luke to tank. They will use the season to develop the youth they have but I don't think we see our vets sitting out like we did last season.
As for the thread, the probability of making the playoffs is miniscule. We have been through the roughest part of our schedule and the remainder looks like we should get some wins but the playoffs are more than likely out of reach. Doubling our win total would be a great season in my mind. 30 wins would be nice as well. _________________ RIP mom. 11-21-1933 to 6-14-2023.

I think the chance of us making the playoffs or of keeping our pick are both slim, so I am not really concerned about either.
I think what the Lakers said at the beginning of the season stands now. They aren't worried about wins or losses (whether that means making the playoffs or improving the chances for a draft pick). They are focused on developing for the future. But that doesn't mean playing the rookies 40 minutes a game either. I think Luke will stay with his mix of doling out 25-30 minutes to a ton of guys.
Ingram, Russell and Randle are all getting minutes. Zubac doesn't, probably because he doesn't look good enough in practice or in the short minutes he gets. I accept that he is a long-range project that won't be ready for years, if at all.
I think the Lakers will be open to trading anyone, especially the veterans, though I doubt they'll be as much interest in Williams, Young, etc., as some Lakers fans think or hope.
The loss vs. the Mavs was ugly, no excuse to lose at home against the Conference bottom dweller (for the second time, mind you).
It seems all we are missing is some defensive reinforcement. Now, to get this, Mitch should consider the following:
Step 1:
Trade Clarkson and Robinson (I think they are showcasing him right now, that is why Black does not see the floor) and 1 or 2 second rounders to Philly for Noel and an extension of the pick protection (say Top 10 protected insted of Top 3)
Step 2:
Trade Calderon plus 2nd rounder to Memphis for Brandan Wright, then re-route Wright to Houston for Corey Brewer.
First Unit:
Russell
Young
Deng
Nance
Mozgov
Second Unit:
Williams
Brewer
Ingram
Randle
Noel
Black, Huertas and MWP for spot minutes, Zubac D-League
We retain our offensive prowess by giving Ingram a bigger role while keeping the punch from the bench alive with Randle instead of Clarkson.
Hate to let Clarkson go, but we need some defensive specialists and with Lou he is somewhat redundant.
