Will it be with this core of players? How many years do you think we are away from competing?

Taken into consideration the strength of competing teams

2022. Only two of Russell, Ingram, Randle, and Nance are still on the team.

You need an all-star or two to be contenders. That could either be from the young guys developing or using them to acquire them. Things can turn around in a hurry if the right move comes along. If it doesn't you need the young guys to make a big step forward.

Yes but it will take a while. This is a full rebuild through draft picks something the lakers haven't experienced before.

The time span it took for the lakers to win again from 88 to 2000 will be much longer than what this is now. We are going on 6 years since our last title and 4 of them have been lottery bound. I'm thinking at least by 2020 we should be competing for a championship

We were in the Finals in '91, and a contender the moment Shaq was acquired in '96. But I guess it depends on your definition of "serious".

Very true. The CBA will make it difficult for us to get an impact
player so this will be a long very long rebuild.

I'm not being doom and gloom here, but just looking at the pick situation and the new Designated Player Exception, the earliest would be sometime after 2021. And even that's being generous. It took the Warriors seven years after they drafted Steph, right?

Of course if the Lakers commit to some wonky win now trades and it actually pays off, that's all out the window. I'm assuming they take the long road with the rebuild.

I don't see it being as long as most here think. There is a fine line between success and failure. This team has high potential pieces. They can score but need to learn to put some heart in their defense. Their young and it won't happen over night but can't be a force giving up 110 points a game. Not having that first round pick is a bummer this year too.

They can do better right now. The way they started the season shows me this. Beating some very good teams but it takes everyone being on the same page. When things didn't work they suffered like young boys do and not like veteran men. This is when you need a leader. One that can back his words up with production. Not someone who just stat fills but demands to play with people who want to win or call them out. This leader hasn't emerged yet.

It's realistically impossible to predict because at this point I agree that we need some patience with our young players, but there is no real signs that one of them may become the kind of player that you build around.

If they can become a playoff team next year, they could do it in 3, if not, probably 5 or 6.

2018-2019 or 2019-2020 seasons. They need guys to mature and a few more key pieces which is going to take 2-3 years.

I think this is possible....it is mostly about how we improve, but it also is about how the current elite teams age. GSW has a chance to be title contending for at least 3-4 more seasons, but I think the Cavs window will have closed.

When the Paul trade Veto happened, I said that move set the Lakers back a decade. Nobody wanted to deal with or be the ones to put the Lakers back on top after that either. The new cba could extend that some, because you pretty much need to have home grown talent and stars now. Exactly why I was ok with tanking.

Title contender? Uhhm.
Let's just say, we won't have to worry about the Lakers visiting the Trump White House.

I think we're one play maker away from being a good team. Russell, JC, and Lou are being asked to run plays when they're not good at it. Russell, Lou, and JC are scorers first. Once we acquire someone who can dribble penetrate and dish (and play defense), we'll be contending.

2022. Look at Golden State. It took them 7 years to convert Ellis to Bogut. Draft Curry and wait 5 years, Draft Klay, wait 3 years, Draft Draymond, wait 2 years.

We still haven't converted JC into a Bogut caliber player yet and we're on year 1.25 of waiting on the All-Star potential players.

After Magic, who could have predicted Shaq would be coming in 97? Without Shaq, history altered, Lakers would most likely have 5 less chips. No Shaq probably means West does not clear space, which means he probably wouldn't deal Vlade for the 13th pick, no matter how much he liked Kobe.

If we knew, we'd all be rich. Because Vegas poses these types of questions and you can wager on it.
