Decision Day for MWP and T-Rob (Jan. 7th last day teams can release players on partially guaranteed contracts and still have them clear waivers.)
Quote:
When Metta World Peace racked up three fouls in two minutes on Friday night there was an ominous undertone that the performance may be the veteran’s last. It’s unclear whether the 37-year-old’s leadership will be enough to convince the Lakers brass to retain him after today’s deadline, writes Mark Media of The Los Angeles Daily News.

January 7 marks the last day that teams can release players on partially guaranteed contracts and still have them clear waivers. The Lakers have the option to release both World Peace and 25-year-old Thomas Robinson should they wish to free up a roster spot for an acquisition later on down the road.

World Peace has played sparingly in his sixth season across two stints with the Lakers, but will forever hold a spot in team history after winning a title alongside Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol in 2010.

Lakers head coach Luke Walton knows what today represents for World Peace and has voiced his desire to keep the veteran forward. “I like him with us,” Walton tells Tania Ganguli of The Los Angeles Times, “but that’s a front office decision. My recommendation is to keep him.“

There is no reason to cut Trob. I'd cut Metta and sign a younger prospect with upside.

T-Rob is definitely a keeper at this point so that's a no brainer for the FO. Luke recommends we keep MWP. We shall see.

What's the other option? Offer them both a guaranteed contract?

Please get Metta off this roster, Mitch. This has been cute and all, but it's time. Let's take a shot on some dude in the D-League or keep a spot open if a trade pops up.

I don't know why. If it's for leadership, we can sign him as a coach and he can travel with the team, etc. He offers no value and no upside.

I think they keep both. T-Rob has been productive and MWP isn't on the team for on court production anyway.

T-Rob is a keeper. Guy brings hustle and effort every second that he's on the court. We need hungry players that go after it.

Flashing back to preseason, back when it looked like Yi Jianlian was a certainty - I was shocked Thomas Robinson just dropped in our laps. He wandered on to the team in late camp fodder territory. Surreal. I watched him play in Portland - a great energy guy who brings putbacks and possession changes, a great attitude and willingness to help his team, a great insurance policy to fall back on when a PF or C goes down and a solid rotation player on his own. Someone who can come in for 15 minutes and get you 10 rebounds and 6 points just from scrapping below the rim, slamming it home and making life difficult for other teams down low. TRob was a crowd favorite in Portland for good reason. No surprise the Staples crowd likes him too. If he's happy playing a bench role on this roster then we're lucky to have him.

Metta - shocked as I was about TRob coming here, I was equally shocked Metta even made this team. I hope he's open to an assistant coach role with us.

agreed, I'm just saying that having T-Rob allows you to trade T-Black because T-Rob is good enough to back up both our 4/5 position

Thanks MWP and Huertas. Rather use those spots to try to find a dleague diamond in the rough or a recently cut player.

^Yup. I wouldn't consider getting rid of Black for one second. But MWP and Huertas serve no purpose on the court anymore.

They will keep both. If they want some other player further down the season, they'll waive someone.

Good point.
Keeping them would be a just reward for their services thus far.
MWP, T-Rob and/or Huertas could easily be waived at a later date if, for some reason, the FO decides that their services are no longer needed.

Lakers Plan On Keeping Thomas Robinson, Contemplating Waiving Metta World Peace

Quote:

Lakers are happy w/the role MWP has as a rostered mentor - deciding if that's worth guaranteeing rest of the season - can always waive later

Keep TROB and pay Metta. Waive him down the line if necessary, but pay/keep him until they do.

I love Metta.

I'm kind of curious about giving David Nwaba some short burn. He's been a great defender in the D-League. MWP taking up a spot is just silly.

What's up with gp2, heard he was some type of player in the Avery Bradley mold?

Luke Walton disagrees. He sees the value in having a player on the bench that can tutor the young players. That seems to be commonly ignored here.

I dont think its ignored, I just think some people think Luke overvalues his buddy MWP, and the Lakers should be looking for cheap potential talent. I really dont think it matters if the guarantee him or not, the Lakers can waive him at any time....so I hope he at least gets his money.

If you listened to Luke's response yesterday, his tone has slightly changed....he still claims he wants MWP, but is putting an emphasis on it is a FO decision, and not up to him.
