Sounds like a trade is a possiblity!

Quote:
And as for the salary cap, and its impact on a deal, "it's difficult [trading] a young player for an old player," Mitch said, and OK, so if that means Devean George has to go, I'll get over it.

IT HAS BEEN easy, of course, to criticize Mitch. He's not Jerry West, for a start, doesn't have the number of trophies that Buss and Jackson have, and for frustrated Laker fans, that leaves Mitch. On occasion Kobe takes the heat, and most every day it could be Brown, but then who brought Brown to L.A.?

are a work in progress, and while I wonder if Jackson's heart is in this for the long haul, the future really does hang on Mitch's ability to make the right moves.

"You have to see the future, but can't go so far out that the fans can't see what you want to do," Mitch said. "We want to do something, but you don't want to take unnecessary risks just to get to the second or third rounds of the playoffs — like giving away two or three young players."

"Does that make Andrew Bynum untouchable in a trade?"

"I don't want to get into specific names, but we think Andrew is a little bit ahead of the curve and we're very pleased with where he is in his development."

Tell that to Jackson ...

"I don't think he's a project that's going to take four or five years down the road," Mitch said. "We're going to get something out of him earlier than that. You don't find centers very often in this game, and he's a true center."

Sounds to me as if he's untouchable, but then it was time to let Mitch go, "not much time here for fun," he said. Oh yeah, try sitting through a Laker game these days.

Keep the stupid moron comments to yourself. I'm tired of reading commentary from the stupid patrol.

You got something intelligent to add, whether pro or con, please feel free to. You want to dumb down the board, find another board.

If you listen to Mitch, everything is possible and nothing is probable. Here is a guide to Mitchspeak.

Sounds like Mitch is trying to justify not pulling the trigger on some potential trades. Can't blame him for finally speaking out.

I don't think any GM knows for sure what they're doing right now. Lot of talk around the league about potential deals and sounds like everyone is baiting everyone else, trying to drive up the price of whomever they're trying to get rid of.

More posturing that any actual deal making going on.

Yes Faather!

He makes these types of comments every year around this time...can't really fault the man in the middle...

Buss comes up with a plan.
Phil narrows the trade bait.
Buss FURTHER narrows the trade bait.

Mitch is left with beans at the market place trying to buy cows...

At least he hasn't made a BUNCH of BAD trades like Isiah Thomas!!!

Mitch is doing his best. It's not like he's sitting around and doing nothing. Hopefully he comes up with something that will help the Lakers soon.

How sure are you? Is that a "trade MUST be made" or is it "they really would like to move some players"...?

How about Trenton Hassell? He's the best veteran backcourt defender who might be available (if Minny gives up on the season and wants to give PT to McCants), plus he's developed a damn good outside jumper.

I don't know what Minny would want from us (or if apeman would even agree to a trade with his hated Lakers) -- maybe last year's and draft picks if we also take on Jaric's or Hudson's contract?

If not Hassell, I guess Minny still has Spree's rights for S&T purposes. I'm not sure if he can still play defense, but a couple of years ago he fit Mitch's description of what we need. Of course, so did McKie....

With about half of the team in the backcourt currently, wouldn't it be smart to move some of these guys INSTEAD of DG? Say, Luke/Devin Green or Sasha with Slava's contract?

my guess on the veteran backcourt speculation - Grant Hill....Yeah yeah, he's a small forward, but he'd look mighty fine with a Ron Harper type of role.

Slava and Walton would be enough for Hassel, if they want to dump salary, but at this point, give us KG

The Lakers are a franchise like no other. While most of us Lakers fans sit here and wish for quick-fixes to improve this team, the management is only looking for pieces to make them title contenders. So I can understand why fans get frustrated when they see all these other teams wheelin' and dealin', making moves to help them in the short term.

It takes a bold GM and a bold owner to show the kind of patience Dr. Buss and Mitch are showing. I'm not saying I agree with what they're doing or disagree, but all I can do is hope that their patience pays off in the end.

Mitch's requirements:

- veteran
- backcourt player
- can make big defensive plays
- help with scoring

Possibilities who might actually be available:

- Trenton Hassell
- Earl Watson
- Spree
- Ron Artest (supposedly he and Bibby already don't like each other)
- Jaric (compared to Smush and Sasha, Jaric is a decent defender)
- D. Anderson (can he still play D?)
- Ty Lue (he can guard small PGs and knows the triangle)
- Steve Francis (I put him at the bottom of the list because it seems that Mitch's emphasis is D rather than scoring)
