My mom has been sick for over 3 weeks. In that time, she's been to the hospital about 4 times, one time for an ER visit (dehydration, nausea, etc.), as well as 3 times for urgent care visits and scheduled Dr. appointments. All of the lab work and x-rays indicate that she doesn't have anything serious.

Over three weeks later, and she still has a nasty cough. Not a regular cough, but pretty bad "sounding" one. Going to head over and bring her some chicken soup. Wondering if anyone has any tips - As I've said, she's been to the doctor's/hospitals plenty, but I'm not used to flu's/cold's lasting this long.

She's otherwise very healthy - exercises everyday and is at a regular weight.

Take her back ASAP. Old people are quite susceptible (among other things) to pneumonia infections. It can be fatal if left untreated.

Go back to her PCP and demand a referral to a pulmonologist ASAP

Age ... ?

I think bronchial infections can present some of the symptoms you're describing, too ... typically less of a serious matter than pneumonia or other pulmonary illnesses (e.g., pneumonitis), but still a good idea to follow-up with her PCP.

Good luck ...

Thanks for the tips. She actually went to her PCP today, and did the tests I mentioned earlier, which came up normal. I'll tell her to ask for a pulmonologist referral.

If chest xray is normal, she might need a CT scan of her chest which is a much better test (higher risk of radiation). Also there are certain swabs they can do to test for certain bacteria like Pertussis, etc. A lot depends on her history, i.e travel, weight loss, night sweats, etc. Also certain medications like Lisinopril can cause a dry cough. Hope they find out what's going on.

Honey, lime, salt, tea. Also a nasal spray. When sinus drain mucus sometimes settles in the throat area causing a cough.

A old Belize home remedy. Blend some aloe vera plant, mix with orange juice. Drink about a ounce at bed time.

EDIT;
Continue to go to her personal physician. I recently had the same thing. My personal physician gave me, nasal spray, Robitussin DM, anti-bodies and steroid albuterol inhaler.

If the cough recently developed after the tests, make sure they get a culture this time.

Glad you take her best interests to heart.

Well they gave them to me last year when I had a similar issue but it was termed "respiratory infection"

Same with me. I was given antibiotics to take 3 times a day for 10 days. I was ordered not to stop until the supply was depleted.

Went through a full antibiotic treatment. Nothing worked. Finally took an inhailed steroid powder to kill it.

Yep. Sounds exactly what I experienced a few years ago and it did indeed to be a pretty bad case of pneumonia. Fortunately I was just in my late 40's at the time.

Yeah this could be anything if it's chronic. Most common at this time of the year could be pertussis or whooping cough if it sounds nasty like that.
Don't call to make an appt with the PCP. Just call the PCP to get you the referral.

He's a monster. Not only has he entered countries without showing documentation, he's now attempting to sell drugs for a living.

Ginger root boiled, add honey.

I went to a doctor some years back regarding a persistent cough and mucus in the throat.
she gave me something for my nasal (sinus area). I told her its my throat that's the problem. She said just take it. A few days later it all cleared up.

Yah, mine was Advair. Saved my sanity if not my life. I coughed so hard one day I separated a rib.

I coughed hard and when I couldn't bring any mucus I actually passed out. That's when I said it's time to go see my doctor. He gave me a explanation for my passing out. I've forgotten what it was but it kinda put me at ease.

I take Advair twice daily. I didn't know that was a steroid. I have a 250/50 disc.
