Why doesn’t Baseball have salary cap like in the NBA and NFL? Is there any actual reason for it? It’s pretty frustrating as a fan of a small market team to see your best players pawned off to the Yankees, Red Sox, or Dodgers the second they’re up for their first big contract. |
A better question is why the NBA and NFL have salary caps. It's because the owners beat the unions in labor disputes and forced them to accept something that would otherwise be illegal as hell. The MLB union is a lot stronger and has quashed that stuff, plus there was more of a big market vs. small market rift among the owners than we saw in the other sports. This was driven in part by the fact that MLB derives a higher portion of its revenue locally (as opposed to national TV contracts) than the other leagues. |
