I just took a weekend trip to San Francisco from L.A. this past weekend and we flew there and back. It got me wondering about this.

Is it legal to carry recreational marijuana with you on a commercial flight if the 2 cities are within the state? I have tried to Google it and can't find a definitive answer. I even asked one of the airline employees and he said he didn't think so, but he wasn't sure.

Does anyone know the answer to this?

When I smoke marijuana, my travels tend to be extraterrestrial.

This only applies to Medical but common sense dictates it would apply also to recreational:

As for flying, airports and airplanes are federal jurisdictions, and patients can be detained and arrested when going through security. Federal authorities do not recognize the medical marijuana laws or cards of any state. There are some airports that are medical marijuana ‘friendly’ and allow patients with correct documents to board with the amount deemed necessary for personal consumption.

For more detailed information on this, read our article: Can I Fly with Medical Marijuana?

This is also a good read:

In summary, it's a grey area. Imho if you have doubts then don't risk it. Especially if you're travelling within the state and can buy a new bag when you get to your destination.

If you're wondering how to take your pot on the plane, you might have a problem...

Just buy marijuana at your destination. See what San Fran has to offer. Save yourself the hassle.
If you really want something for the trip. You can always bring edibles.

Or you've discovered its benefits in pain management and that it is much more preferable in that regard than taking standard pharmaceuticals and having to deal with their undesirable side effects.

I have flown with edibles before without any problem, but I honestly was just curious and it was bugging me that I couldn't find an answer. I rarely smoke when I take trips as I'm not a huge smoker and I'd rather just do it at home.

Yeah, except the question was about recreational Marijuana.

Also, just so you know OP.
You can't purchase recreational marijuana until January 2018.
But in the meantime, you can legally grow 6 plants of marijuana if you are over 21. Also you are allowed to consume marijuana recreationally and possess up to an ounce of flowers or up to eight grams of concentrate.

None of that matters in an airport, which falls under federal jurisdiction.

Damn. That's interesting. Since federal law still considers cannabis a dangerous illegal drug with no acceptable medicinal value ... Preventing marijuana possession or use on federal property.

Poor cancer and Parkinson's patients. They could be locked up if they travel with their medication.

Anyone have any experience with treating chronic tension headache with MJ? The last couple of years I've been getting tension headaches 3 or more days a week and can't seem to find anything that helps. Tried accupuncture, physical therapy, deep tissue massages, changed pillows, got a memory foam matress. The only thing that helps is Excedrin but that can cause stomach upset. I think my next move is to try some edibles to see if that helps.

Tension headaches as in tight neck muscles that irritate the nerves and cause headaches? If so, yes. I'm all to familiar with them. First thing I'd recommend is go an orthopedic surgeon or someone familiar with spinal problems. X-Rays or an MRI might reveal problems in your vertebrae.

Sorry to here you have problems taking Excedrin. Excedrin Tension Headache and a Valerian root herbal supplement called Formula 303 really helps knock out the pain for me.

Because the pain often wakes me up in the middle of the night, I'm often tired the next day and have to use a lot of caffeine to keep me going at work. When I get home, MJ does help me unwind from all the caffeine but it's never really helped as much with the pain as the Excedrin/Formula 303 combo. I keep some by my bed all the time.

Good luck with finding a solution to your problem. I know what you're going through.

I didn't realize that finding weed made you more masculine. Thanks for your extremely useful insight that will stay with me until the end of time.
