Brett Favre to test Iron Man streak with 100-mile race

No quarterback in NFL history has held up better than Brett Favre, his streak of 321 consecutive starts — including the playoffs — a league record. Peyton Manning ranks second at 227. Eli Manning and Philip Rivers own the longest active streaks at 211 and 185, respectively. Eli must play six-plus more seasons, through his 41st birthday, to match it.

Favre was the NFL’s Iron Man.

He is extending the reputation into retirement.

The Pro Football Hall of Famer is training for a 100-mile bike race in June. The Trek 100 is based in Wisconsin and serves as a major fundraiser for Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer (MACC Fund). Favre is riding 50 to 100 miles a week in Mississippi as part of his preparation, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Post-football, Favre has done much of what he did during it.

He’s kept close to the game, coaching at the high school level in Mississippi. He’s still slinging it, recently captured on video rifling passes to Falcons cornerback Robert Alford.

Now, he’s putting his endurance level to the test.

Quote:
Adrian Peterson to visit the Patriots on Monday

Adrian Peterson is set to meet with the defending Super Bowl champions.

The former Vikings running back will visit the Patriots on Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN first reported Sunday. This is Peterson’s second known free-agency visit of the off-season, having also met with the Seahawks. Peterson, 32, spent the first 10 years of his career with the Vikings, although he played just three games in 2016.

He logged 37 carries for 72 yards without a score.

At this stage in his career, Peterson surely is looking to join a club with Super Bowl aspirations. He’s found one with interest. That is despite New England being fairly well-stocked at running back between Rex Burkhead, Dion Lewis, James White and D.J. Foster.

LeGarrette Blount remains a free agent.

On Saturday, it was reported the Buccaneers definitely are not in the mix for Peterson.

I've heard on FirstTake and other sports shows, he made the decision for health reasons. I think it was a wise decision.

He'll still be in the football arena. He's taking a job as a analyst,
replacing Phil Simms. Simms wasn't highly revered by many as a analyst.

Damn, was hoping he'd end up in Houston. Would've been nice to see him win a SB and give Jerry an aneurysm.

A part of me thinks he's retiring so he can go to the team he wants because Jerry wouldn't let him go otherwise.

But I guess he really is taking over Phil Simms for the top broadcasting spot on NFL on CBS.

It had seemed at least during his press conferences that he wants to pad that resume for the HOF (suiting up for a team fielding an All-Pro WR, a run game, and the league's #1 D like Houston would've made that easier). But a broadcasting job pretty much ends that.

Eddie Lacy postpones his garage sale

Posted by Mike Florio on April 8, 2017, 9:46 AM EDT

Those of you who were waiting for a chance to purchase one or more Eddie Lacy tchotchkes will have to keep waiting.

Via the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Lacy has delayed his garage sale from April 7 and 8 to May 5 and 6, tentatively. A flight postponement apparently prompted the decision to move the event.

Lacy, who signed last month with the Seahawks, plans to sell his extra stuff (i.e., stuff he’d otherwise throw away) and to donate the money to charity. The specific identity of the stuff he’ll be selling isn’t known.

“Caution…ya won’t find any Fine China, Gucci sneaks or flat screens, I’m pretty simple,” Lacy said recently. “Just raising a few bucks for a good cause.”

The proceeds will go to Freedom House, a Green Bay facility that gives emergency housing and other services to families in need. It sounds like a very good cause, so here’s the link to make a donation, if so motivated while reflecting on your own good fortunes and realizing that plenty out there aren’t as lucky.

Quote:
Will Smith’s wife files wrongful death lawsuit against Cardell Hayes

The second phase of legal action arising from the shooting death of Saints defensive end Will Smith has begun.

Cardell Hayes, already convicted of manslaughter in connection with the incident that left Smith dead and his wife shot in the leg, has been sued by Will Smith’s estate and by Raquel Smith. The lawsuit also names the insurance companies providing coverage to the cars that Hayes and Will Smith were driving.

Other lawsuits have been filed as the one-year anniversary of the incident approaches. Richard Hernandez and his wife, who were riding in the car with Will and Racquel Smith, have filed suit against Hayes and Will Smith’s estate. Jonathan Whipple, who was driving a car that was rear-ended in a chain reaction after Hayes slammed his vehicle into Smith’s, also has sued.

Civil lawsuits are routine in car accidents, but the added element of a confrontation that led to gunfire, mayhem, and death will make it a little more difficult to wedge the events with the boundaries of insurance coverage. The fact that the lawsuits are being filed just before the Louisiana deadline for doing so suggests that any efforts to settle the insurance claims before going to court have failed.

Players who took part in Vegas arm wrestling event will be fined

A group of NFL players who took part in an arm wrestling event in Las Vegas over the weekend will be disciplined by the NFL.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the players will be fined for violating the league’s policy barring players from taking part in events held at casinos. NFL spokesman Joe Lockhart told Jarrett Bell of USA Today that no one from the event, which was taped for later broadcast on CBS, asked for permission but organizers disputed that account.

Steelers linebacker James Harrison, Dolphins wide receiver Kenny Stills, 49ers linebacker Navorro Bowman, Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey, Raiders punter Marquette King, Raiders defensive end Mario Edwards, Patriots safety Patrick Chung, and Cowboys receiver Lucky Whitehead took part in the event. Marshawn Lynch was also a participant and appears poised to join the Raiders for the 2017 season, but Rapoport reports that his current spot on the reserve/retired list will allow him to avoid a fine.

The league’s policies on gambling and promotions involving casinos are sure to come under further scrutiny in the next few years as the Raiders prepare to make Las Vegas their home. For now, though, the players have found themselves on the wrong side of the league’s disciplinary department.

Father, son arrested after NFL-inspired bar fight

Posted by Mike Florio on April 10, 2017, 9:48 AM EDT

It’s always good for fathers and sons to spend time together. Except when they are spending time together beating people up.

Via Philly.com, 56-year-old Christopher Hoffman and his 32-year-old son, Brittan Holland, face assault charges after a fight at Joe’s Taven in South Jersey moved outside. The incident reportedly began over an argument about the Eagles.

Hoffman, who was charged with third-degree aggravated assault, and Holland, charged with second-degree assault and still in custody, fled in a vehicle after the fight. The two unnamed victims were located inside the bar, reportedly covered in blood.

Hoffman and Holland apparently have found common ground in their mutual dislike of the Eagles. Hoffman was wearing Steelers slippers, and Holland said he’s a Cowboys fan.

Given those choices, it’s surprising that father hasn’t already killed son, or vice-versa.

Quote:
Roddy White retires from football after 11 seasons

Former Falcons wide receiver Roddy White spent a whole year on the sidelines, and realized today he was finished with football.

White just put out word on Twitter that he was retiring as a player, thanking the Falcons and owner Arthur Blank for his 11 years there.

White didn’t play last year, but that didn’t keep him from continuing to gripe about the Falcons offense. He had problems with his own role two years ago, not handling the inevitable effects of age particularly well, but mostly targeting former offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan.

While he wasn’t always the biggest fan of ours here at PFT, White had an excellent career, going to four Pro Bowls and finishing with 808 catches for 10,863 yards (both in the top 40 all-time) and 63 touchdowns.

I'm not fooled. He's still a full Trumper. Mainly this is likely for PR.

What an interesting life story RIP

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/04/22/eddie-macon-first-african-american-to-play-for-the-bears-dies-at-90/
Quote:
Eddie Macon, first African-American to play for the Bears, dies at 90

Eddie Macon, who in 1952 became the first black player in Chicago Bears history, has died. He was 90.

Born in 1927, Macon joined the Army as soon as he turned 18, just as World War II was ending, and was stationed in Japan for seven months. When he returned home he enrolled at the University of the Pacific, where he would recall years later that he was mostly treated well as the school’s first black football player.

An exception to that, however, came when the team traveled to face LSU. Macon made the trip thinking he would play in the game, only to find out when he got there that LSU refused to play against a black player. Pacific’s team was also repeatedly refused service at restaurants because Macon was there, and when the team could finally dine together Macon was forced to use a back entrance.

“You never get used to that,” Macon recalled in 2005. “It’s demeaning.”

After three seasons at Pacific, Macon was selected by the Bears in the second round of the 1952 NFL draft. As the only black player on the Bears he would say later that he was generally treated well, though there were some exceptions.

“I had no problems with the fans,” Macon said. “The team that I really had problems with was the Detroit Lions. They beat me in the face, twisted my legs. When I got in a pile, I tried to come out of that pile because I knew what they were going to try to do.”

Macon chose to leave the Bears after two years and play for his Pacific coach, who had taken a job in the Canadian Football League. That infuriated Bears owner George Halas, and as a result the Bears for decades did nothing to honor their first African-American player.

After quitting football in 1955 to become a longshoreman, Macon changed his mind and returned to the CFL in 1957, played three more seasons there, and then joined the upstart American Football League in 1960, where he was an All-Pro defensive back for the Raiders.

Macon retired from football the following year and returned to work as a longshoreman. He said in an interview four years ago, “I had the dream and lived the dream.”

Macon is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 71 years, Jessie, as well as four children, 12 grandchildren, “more than three dozen” great-grandchildren and 10 great-great grandchildren.

The draft compensation will be a swap of late-round picks in 2018. Seattle gets Oakland's fifth-round pick in exchange for the Seahawks' sixth-round pick, according to someone informed of the agreement.

That all depends on how much of Lynch is still there.

I am an absolute NFL Draft junkie, and am always fascinated with Mock Drafts and seeing how many picks I can accurately call in the first round. It's really hard; even getting 10 correct is considered really good. With that said, this is my best guess at how the first round will unfold, with some comments. I won't project trades, because that's basically an impossible task. Here goes:

1. CLE Mitchell Trubisky
Adam Schefter is as plugged in as it gets, and without coming out and saying it this morning, basically said that it's more likely than not that they take Trubisky over Myles Garrett. This would clearly be the front office's preference for analytics winning out over the coaching staff's desires, and would be very Browns-ian, wouldn't it?

2. SF Myles Garrett
SF would probably set a record for handing in their card the fastest after the #1 pick was made. This would be a gift for the new John Lynch/Kyle Shanahan regime, a genuine no-brainer. I suppose they would take calls to see if some team that was in love with Garrett would offer up a king's ransom, but even if the Niners traded the pick, Garrett would be chosen in this slot.

3. CHI Jamal Adams
The Bears now have to be in what I thought SF's position was, the position where they have to decide who the 2nd-best non-QB prospect is. With major needs in the secondary, they take a great prospect who is also more safe than some others under consideration here.

4. JAX Leonard Fournette
The Jags have added major talent across all 3 levels of their defense over the past couple of seasons, both through the draft and in free agency. I would only take a RB high if they are a culture-changer for a team's offense, and I believe Fournette would be just that for the Jags. They can limit Bortles' pass attempts and go to a more ball-control offense, and not put the defense in such bad spots with the turnovers.

5. TEN Marshon Lattimore
I believe this pick will be a WR or a DB, and the common thinking is that they will pick one of each at 5 and 18, which is their other pick in the 1st round. The top CB is still on the board, and that happens to be, by far, their most glaring need, so I think they take Lattimore here.

6. NYJ Solomon Thomas
Thomas could've been a serious consideration at 2 for the 49ers, before Garrett fell into their laps. He could still go 3rd to the Bears, and the Jets, while they have a strong defensive line, don't have an elite pass rusher. The Jets under Mike Maccagnan have drafted the BPA, and I think they will be happy with Thomas here.

7. LAC Malik Hooker
Here is a case where another team is doing cartwheels, because I think this would be a perfect fit for the type of defense new DC Gus Bradley wants to run. Hooker is a game-breaking safety with his great ball skills, and he can play the Earl Thomas role in the defense. I think he's 50/50 to end up better than Adams. Jonathan Allen is another consideration here, but I think Hooker is a better fit and has less injury concerns (though he has some himself with the labrum surgery).

8. CAR Christian McCaffrey
I think that Allen will be under serious consideration here too, because Dave Gettleman loves his big guys on the defensive line. Having said that, there's too much smoke here surrounding the team taking the Stanford product. I think they will throw him a lot of passes, and that will serve to get Cam Newton's dreadful completion % up from last season. Personally, I think this is a bit high for him, but I'm merely predicting here.

9. CIN Jonathan Allen
If not for some concern over Allen's shoulders, he would've been in consideration at the very top of the draft, and I think this is his floor. The Bengals D line has been slipping recently, with just Geno Atkins really providing juice for them, and I think Allen would help tremendously. Health permitting, of course.

10. BUF Mike Williams
The Bills desperately need a legitimate WR to play opposite Sammy Watkins, and I think they might have their eyes on the Clemson product--also where Watkins played his college ball. Williams' size and ability to make contested catches in traffic are reminiscent of how Mike Evans played in college.

11. NO Reuben Foster
Yes, Foster failed a Combine drug test, but he is exactly what the Saints defense needs, and he's the best pure linebacker in this class. He would give the Saints a massive jolt where they need it, and he's a tackling monster, a la Luke Kuechly. I don't buy the reports that he will fall too far.

12. CLE Haason Reddick
With the surprise selection of Trubisky at #1, here they get their pass rusher in Reddick, one whose stock has been rising late in the process. Scouts think he can rush the passer and also cover a bit. Athletic clay with upside, coupled with the major college production last year.

13. ARZ Corey Davis
This is a really tough call. I could see Bruce Arians wanting some immediate help for his team to get back to the playoffs after a down year, but I could also see GM Steve Keim opting for a QB since Carson Palmer is on his last legs. If they don't take the QB, they need a defensive jolt as well as an outside WR. Davis is the type of prolific, big-bodied, athletic WR on the outside that they desperately need, since John and Jaron Brown are both small and Fitzgerald is now a slot WR.

14. PHI Marlon Humphrey
I would've mocked Gareon Conley here, but I think the rape allegation will push him to at least Round 2. McCaffrey could've been the pick here if he fell, but I don't see that happening. They need a CB badly, and I have them going with the Alabama product here. I was tempted to slot them John Ross or OJ Howard.

15. IND Charles Harris
The Colts obviously have a lot of holes, but among the biggest is the need for a pass rusher. They are dangerously thin there, and Harris would offer a potential solution, and an immediate one that they can plug and play. I originally slotted Derek Barnett here, but some late chatter is that most teams prefer Harris to Barnett.

16. BAL OJ Howard
Dennis Pitta deserves credit for making it back to the field last season, but he's no more than a catch-it-and-fall-down guy now. Former high pick Maxx Williams has been a bust. Ozzie Newsome has been a BPA drafter, and Howard has a chance to go as high as #6 to the Jets. He also has an affinity for Alabama players. Howard will give Joe Flacco another weapon, and he is a great blocker, too.

17. WAS Adoree Jackson
I think this was another team that could've taken Conley before the allegations hit, and they could also use another pass rusher. However, Jackson has blazing speed, and although he doesn't have the size that some teams covet, the Redskins already have Josh Norman on one side. Jackson should represent an upgrade over Bashaud Breeland, and there are a lot of WR's to cover in the NFC East.

18. TEN John Ross
The Titans got their CB at pick #5, and here they get a home-run hitting WR with 4.22 speed in Ross. This will add another element to their pass offense, as Rishard Matthews, Tajae Sharp, and Delanie Walker are not burners. Ross, obviously, is.

19. TB Obi Melifonwu
Schefter made it a point to say how good Bucs brass thinks Doug Martin looks right now in camp, so even with the suspension, perhaps they don't use their 1st round pick on a RB like Dalvin Cook. A serious area of need for this defense is at safety, and Melifonwu's stock has been on the rise. I think he could be the third safety chosen.

20. DEN Garret Bolles
The mauling Utah product would help the Broncos' O line immediately, and it's no secret that obtaining a tackle is, by far, Denver's biggest area of need. In this mock, no offensive linemen have been taken yet, so they get their pick of the litter. Of some concern is that Bolles is already 24 and they could opt for Cam Robinson or Ryan Ramczyk instead.

21. DET TJ Watt
The Lions really need some more pass rush help opposite Ziggy Ansah, and Watt is another guy whose stock has risen over the past month. He might not be as good as his brother, but he has a chance to be pretty good in his own right.

22. MIA Derek Barnett
Plugged-in Dolphins beat reporter Armando Salguero has basically guaranteed that the Dolphins will be taking a defensive lineman/pass rusher with this selection, and I think that Miami could end Barnett's slide here. Guys like Taco Charlton, Takkarist McKinley, or Jordan Willis could be other possibilities.

23. NYG Ryan Ramczyk
The Wisconsin product was a dominant offensive tackle last season, but some teams question his passion for the game after he once quit football. Still, the Giants need an O-line upgrade badly, and Ramczyk's upside is quite high. I also considered Miami TE David Njoku here, as he would help the offense at a position of need.

24. OAK Jarrad Davis
With a lot of the top pass rushers off the board, and a serious need for a playmaking, tackling linebacker, I think the Raiders would choose between Davis and Zach Cunningham here if they did go LB. Cunningham is perhaps safer, as Davis has more of an injury history, but Davis looks better to me on tape, and I think the Raiders would opt for the upside here. They could also look for a corner in the wake of Sean Smith's disappointing year, and if so, Kevin King could be a possibility. A dark horse candidate for this pick could be Forrest Lamp, whom I personally have as my favorite offensive lineman in this class. If there is a weakness at all along the Raiders O-line, it's on the right side. Having said that, the Raiders are really close to Super Bowl contention, and the far greater area of need on the team is to obtain a playmaking LB.

25. HOU Deshaun Watson
I don't buy for a second that the Texans are going to go into the season with Tom Savage as their starting QB, do you? While I've seen Pat Mahomes commonly mocked here, seemingly due to a belief that Bill O'Brien would prefer the stronger-armed prospect, I think they will take Watson. Watson is more of a finished product and has fantastic leadership qualities, and this is a ready-made playoff team. Watson has the moxie and the ability to make plays in the clutch that I think will appeal to O'Brien. I wouldn't rule out Houston actually trading up for Watson and taking him earlier than this.

26. SEA Forrest Lamp
Much like Denver, it's no secret that the Seahawks need offensive line help, and they need it badly. In this mock, both Cam Robinson and Forrest Lamp are available, and I think the pick would come down to one of them. I'll go with Lamp here, because I simply believe his game tape is better than the bigger-named Robinson, and John Schneider hasn't shied away from smaller-school prospects in the past.

27. KC Pat Mahomes
Alex Smith is the very definition of mediocre and he's in the final year of his contract. Mahomes has the type of tools (athleticism, arm strength) that Andy Reid covets in his QB's, and he might remind him some of Donovan McNabb. Mahomes is even stronger and could take over as the starter in 2018.

28. DAL Kevin King
I think this pick would come down to a pass rusher or a CB for the Cowboys, who are sorely lacking in both areas. I think their CB need is much greater, however, and King's stock has risen during the Draft process. If they go with a pass rusher, Charlton, McKinley, and Willis are all in play here.

29. GB Takkarist McKinley
Like Dallas, the Packers have serious needs for a pass rusher and for a CB. The draft looks more deep at CB, and so I could see Ted Thompson opt for another UCLA product; he's taken quite a few of them over the past few years.

30. PIT David Njoku
Unfortunately, Ladarius Green, talent and all, simply cannot be counted on to stay healthy. Roethlisberger has even lobbied for the team to add another TE. Enter Njoku, who has massive upside at the position.

31. ATL Taco Charlton
Other than Vic Beasley, the Falcons have very little guys that can get to the QB. Charlton could help here.

32. NO Jordan Willis
The Saints already grabbed Foster to bolster their LB corps earlier, and with Willis still on the board here, now they grab a pass rusher. The Saints also pick at #42, so they can still target a CB or safety in what is a deep draft for secondary guys.
