I think Jim got the short end of the stick. However, the Deng and Mozgov signings were job killers.
Agreed. They were punting for 3 seasons to this ultimate 2016 crescendo and we got...Moz and Deng. Ouch. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals

They were apparently f'd unless they had signed Whiteside and Derozan. In hindsight, I wish Mitch would've gone full Hinkie this past offseason on his way out the door.

My hope was that in 2015, b/f the huge spike, that they would have spent the cap space that summer. Any "bad signing" from 2015 would have been swept in part by the huge cap increase. DeMarre Caroll may end up being a bad signing for the Raptors, but his 2015 deal under the 2016 and 2017 cap rises aren't that bad at all. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals

Probably from one of my piss and moan threads about Kobe's extension.
Pelinka was a G for getting a 48m extension for a legend whose Achilles was torn. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals

We need a time machine to go back and warn Mitch in 2015 to make Robin Lopez his #1 FA target. Oh, and to draft Norman Powell instead of Anthony Brown.

And then stop 9/11.
With the time machine "fuel" being limited, I'd stop 9/11 first. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals

Mitch Kupchak gave everything he had to this franchise.
Came as a free agent from Washington to be Kareem's backup.
Fought through a ton of knee injuries.
Literally fought with Akeem Olajuwon in the desperation Game 5 of the 1986 WCF and got both of them thrown out of the game... a pawn-for-queen gambit which is legendary in NBA lore.
Earned his MBA while on the injured list and later as a scout for West.
Became a valued assistant GM to West.
Took the reins from West after he retired in 2000.
Figured out how to find bargain basement players to fill out the roster in the face of Dr. Buss' very difficult cost-conscious directives in the Shaq-Kobe era.
Did the hard task of a reasonable rebuild in the mid-2000s just as more and more corporate conglomerates were taking over team ownership throughout the league.
Traded for hidden gems in Shannon Brown and Trevor Ariza.
Traded Kwame Brown and change for Pau Gasol.
Turned difficult negotiations for Trevor Ariza into FA signing of Ron Artest.
Retained services of Lamar Odom at reduced price.
Negotiated Chris Paul trade with Pau Gasol at near peak value and for savings of $20 million on salary cap over time, only to have deal rejected by other owners in controversial move.
Recovered to negotiate trade for Dwight Howard dealing only Andrew Bynum and minor assets.
Negotiated trade for Steve Nash to team with Howard (albeit for loss of multiple draft picks).
Drafted above value with picks for Jordan Clarkson, Larry Nance, Jr., and Ivica Zubac.
Drafted D'Angelo Russell over Jahlil Okafor (though missed Porzingis).
Was Mitch a perfect GM? Of course not - there is no such thing. Even the great Jerry West missed some hidden gems in the draft.
But FAR more often than not, Mitch made the best possible deals for this franchise and helped maintain its growth and success in changing times. Mitch was a loyal member of the team, both on and off the court. The last few years will and should be viewed in the context of devoted and exemplary service over the course of FOUR DECADES.
There was a saying around here for years: "Do it, Mitch!"

You did it, sir. And we were lucky to have you.
THANK YOU, MITCH.

Qft. Mitch truly is, "the Gawd!" I hope he lands somewhere else and just owns it. Or just enjoy that sunny SoCal weather. Well deserved. _________________ Music is my medicine

Thanks to Mitch. I think most of us are sorry that it came down to this, but after the last few years, we all needed a change. Good luck to you, we will remember the good things. _________________ Never argue with stupid people! They will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience!! - Twain
Mitch is all class and we should have treated him better. At least if you're going to fire him like that, how about some nice words or a segment on him for the Laker channel? _________________ Austin Reaves

I'm not going to pile on too heavy... But I'll just say this...
Mitch had one gear... One speed... He wasn't creative nor adaptable. Some of the moves were great... But he made some extremely bad ones that have almost killed this franchise...
The Steve Nash deal should have been the point where he was fired. It should not have gotten to the point where we didn't get anything for Pau.
I have plenty more to say... But it doesn't add value anymore. Mitch can go sit down now. Good for him. _________________ “There are no limits.
