As an outside the box evaluator, I must say Mitch is a good GM. Not great, not a big risk taker but not horrible like some other GMs. I grade him a C+ as a GM. Good in trade but horrible in free agent signing.
Tells you straight up there weren't many bad times during his career
Let's you know his young core will win everntually with the coach he put them with.
Savage. He said a whole lot without saying much. Handled it perfectly the way he should have. He set us up to be successful for years to come. Great job. Best gm in basketball IMO
Mastermind. It's sad that he doesn't get the credit he deserves.
He had a clear vision and he executed every time. Too bad the rest of the world isn't as patient and meticulous as he is.

Exactly how I feel.
I will always be a Laker fan, but I will find another team to root for where ever Mitch lands.
Nothing but the best, Mr. Kupchak.
Much love, Mitch. You're all class, a true Laker. _________________ LeBron, AD, & _________. Stay tuned.
"...there was a time when the Israelites were wandering in the desert and all of a sudden, bread came down from heaven,” Pelinka said. “That’s kind of what today feels like for us to have KCP join.”
I'm not sad about his departure, he made a lot of mistakes late and I don't trust his rebuilding plan, but the guy is a class act, had a magic wand trading pieces and I wish just the best for him.
2009-10 rings wouldnt be possible w/o the awesome trades he pulled. Ariza trade was still one of my fave. Shannon trade was great too. Pau one was an absolute steal at the time. Never worried we'd get swindled in trades b/c of Mitch. Thanks for finding gems in the draft like JC and Nance.
I was a little surprised he was let go. I thought Magic would keep him but maybe the decision was mutual. I also see why it had to happen. The scouting dept was top tier when Lester was here. After Jim got rid of the entire staff, things started to unravel. Mitch had quite a few his old college buddies / teammates in FO but we needed to shift to modern ways (analytics, etc). I know they hired a few past few yrs but Mitch old school ways may have helped in his exit.
the correct way to handle this would been to "fire" Jim, keep Mitch through summer (he's already deep into this draft class and CBA) and then give him an "advisory role" this summer. Meanwhile, Pelinka could have begun the process to divest OR we could have gone after other GM's (Ujiri, Myers, etc). Either way, I think Mitch and John Black got raw deals for the family's animosity towards Jim.
For some reason, I don't see Mitch taking another job. The guy has been through an awful lot personally and been going at it professionally for way to long. He deserves and needs a break.
I don't like the way Magic and Jeanie played this thing out but I do thin the end result is okay. It had to be done. As a franchise thing began to get stale and hopefully with Pelinka and Ryan West's bigger role, we'll see a new energy and vibe around the team.

Mitch is a throw back, very knowledgeable with the cap as well as talent, and would be a gem for any team who could get him to take an advisory role. My hope is that somehow he returns in that capacity. The thing that I hang my hat on is that I picture RP getting dirty, when Mitch wouldn't. And if agents are right in that Mitch is the only guy who doesn't talk before 9pm when free agency starts, then he can't stay in this game.
^True or not, Ding's reporting is, and has been for sometime, one-sided. Call that biased reporting or propaganda, the product is the same.
It's also not Jim and Mitch who have benefited from his one-sided reported. In fact, his lack of objectivity has probably been a justification for fans to choose Jim's/Mitch's side, i.e. if you have to try so hard to convince us and manipulate us, then maybe you're on the wrong side. He's lost credibility, as anyone does when they show they aren't willing to criticize both sides.
My realist (sic) memory of Mitch was when OKC eliminated us in 5 games in the 2011-2012 playoffs. The elimination game was in OKC. i remember Mitch sitting among OKC's wildly celebrating fans, motionless, like a "cigar store Indian," face carved in stone. I felt like he was taking in this humiliation on behalf of all Lakers fans, everywhere.
Good luck, Mitch. Tough business. _________________ Chick Hearn and Vin Scully. How lucky are we?
