With our Lakers firing blanks at the free agent targets, what's next? Well it is safe to say that we in the hands of ping pong balls, and with a 15% chance at grabbing the No.1 pick it is not a bad idea to start thinking about what we could do with it, the first thought that pops into my mind is Westbrook, yes I said it Westbrook, why? because the Thunder will be in the same situation they were last year, only now their team is no longer an elite playoff team, now they are mediocre at best, what does this mean for the Lakers, Westbrook has emotional connection to L.A.

He is from here, played at UCLA and its highly possible that Magic would consider shipping that No.1 and 27th pick along with probably Jordan Clarkson to the Thunder in exchange for Westbrook (provided he agreed to sign a long term deal), this same formula works with George, only we probably wont need to add the 27th since they don't play in our rivaled conference, and there is another factor that should be considered WE CANT MISS OUT ON EVERY SUPERSTAR FREE AGENT ALL THE TIME

Who is to say we don't trade for one this offseason? I think there's a 50/50 chance we trade for PG13.

How did they miss out on two players that weren't traded? Would you say that 29 teams just missed out on Ingram too?

We develop through the draft for now

At some point the lakers will probably package some grouping of our young players for a better asset.

Right now I think it's about getting young players and seeing who is a keeper, and who might be a good player, but for whatever reasons is more valuable for the lakers in a trade scenario

Keeping the pick where that might be, big for the lakers

oh goodness how is this thread different from all the 10000s of other threads like this very one?

and missing out? do you think the teams were waiting to trade these players to the Lakers, and they just sat on their hands and chose to do nothing?

Ingram is untouchable, and there was enough communication to warrant a discussion that they might of actually of been traded here

Correction, there are NOT free agents so they didn't miss out on them.

All are under contract.

Cousins was moved.....Lakers were smart to not pursue.

Butler is staying for now, as is George.

So, Lakers are not firing blanks.

It would be stupid, for example, to get rid of all your young talent and picks for George when in a year and a half, he could come here outright. The Lakers FO need to continue to help the young players grow and maybe try another trade or free agent signing in the summer coupled with a good draft pick or two.

Thats how you do it right..

assuming the lakers are not going to win anything this year, why trade ingram or whoever for a sueprstar? they may be waiting to get one of these guys later when they are ready to contend without giving up any pieces.

What happens now, you ask?

same thing that was happening before. We have some talented young guys we've built through the draft. They're collecting more picks to try to build even more.

Rebuilds typically take 3-5 years. We're really still in year 1.

we keep on keeping on and see what else becomes available to build with.

First, we didn't miss out on any free agents; we explored trades for some superstars, and most of those guys stayed with their current team, as usually happens.

I don't think Magic and company are going to have some immediate transformational effect. To lure free agents here, the base of young guys has to improve. They aren't going to flock here just because Magic smiles at them.

why trade for a superstar when you are trying to tank to get a pick. I think they try to get PG13 again in the summer when they know if they have the top 3 pick. But the laker brass will make a priority to have an Laker allstar before the start of next season since the allstar game will be in LA next year.

We didn't gut our team...good on us.

I know exactly what we do now...same thing as before. Develop our young guys, let swaggy walk, stretch mozdeng at the end of 17-18 and hope that we can get PG13 then...hope that we keep our pick next year...you know, we do the "rebuilding" thing.

I'm proud of our front office, we had the chance to gut our young core for a stud and we didn't. These are the moves we need, the moves of patience.

I'm GREAT with not trading for him now. Let's just say that things stand pat. The best we can hope for in June is...

D'Angelo Russell
Jordan Clarkson
Brandon Ingram
Corey Brewer
Luol Deng
Julius Randle
Larry Nance Jr.
Tarik Black
Timofey Mozgov
Ivica Zubac
#3 Pick (Lonzo Ball, Markelle Fultz, Josh Jackson, Dennis Smith Jr., Jason Tatum)
#27 Pick
$20M Cap Room

We can all assume that the Pacers will ultimately get knocked out in the 2nd or more likely 1st round this year. Cleveland, Boston, Toronto and Washington are all better than them as it stands today. If that is the case, George will have major leverage to force his way to LAL over the summer.

It's totally reasonable that we could end up only needing to trade a package of Clarkson, Randle or Nance and the 27th pick to Indiana for him. Heck, maybe it even ends up as bad as Sacramento's Cousins trade. Which team is going to trade more than that for a 1yr rental? If George makes it clear that it's LAL or bust, the answer is none.

There is certainly no need to trade Russell, Ingram or (potentially) our top 3 pick for him when it seems likely that he'll bolt for us in 2018.

Is the bolded serious? A superstar in the hand is worth 100 draft picks in the bush. Especially when the chances are that we do not get that draft pick. So you pass on a superstar for a chance to win the lottery?

As for the OP, we continue to develop the young players and they try to win every game they can. Then we re-assess things in the offseason.

What did we miss out? The chance to gut out our entire future only to treadmill with zero successful results only to start the only process all over again?

horrible idea....control what you can control, and maintain flexibility. Try to draft a PG-13....look for gems in the undrafted pile....clear cap space if possible....be open to opportunistic trades...expedite youth development as much as they can handle. Again, Control what you can control, and stop waiting on someone to save us.

Just my opinion

You'd make a good PR for the Lakers. They just fired Black.

Meanwhile, in the Tank-Lab, Lakers just traded away Lou for more of those picks in the bush. But I get your message bro, gotta keep up the appearance.

But I've said this before, players and coaches DO NOT tank. Management can put them in a worst situation to hedge one way or the other, and make no mistake about it, the Laker brass are hedging to keep the pick.
