Bobby Marks of ESPN adds that “the Lakers had $16.5M in room and will likely need to make a roster move to open up additional cap space” in order to fit Caldwell-Pope’s contract.
Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report notes that the Lakers could waive David Nwaba’s non-guaranteed salary and then re-sign him at the veteran’s minimum.
Money-wise, the Lakers could also move a player like Larry Nance, Jr., Ivica Zubac, Kyle Kuzma or Josh Hart for a draft pick or into another team’s cap space in order to give them just enough to sign Caldwell-Pope to the agreed upon deal.
Did I miss the discussion on this? Seems like big news
Bobby Marks stated "The Lakers entered the day with about $17MM in cap room, so based on the terms of Caldwell-Pope’s deal, it’s possible the club will waive David Nwaba – who has a non-guaranteed contract – or another player to create a little more space. There has been no indication yet of a corresponding roster move, however."

The Lakers might also try to trade the expiring contract of Corey Brewer or the three years and around 37.5 million on Jordan Clarkson’s contract."

Obviously there is another move forthcoming.
Is waiving Nwaba and bringing him back at vet min a guaranteed thing? Or could some other team swoop in and take him?
It would suck to lose Nwaba when the Lakers have guys like Deng taking up roster and cap space. I'd rather lose Brewer or maybe even Clarkson (if they could get a draft pick for him).
Would not signing Ennis save Nwaba? Or losing Ennis is coming if they sign Rondo? |
Nwaba isn't clearing waivers. Non-guaranteed vet min contract. |

Unless we're getting a draft pick for Brewer, I doubt it. He's a last-year contract guy.
Hope we can re-sign Nwaba, wondering if he can clear waivers. He's athletic and a defensive bulldog for sure, but dude cannot shoot. Not really someone I'd think other competitive teams would be looking for. |

Yea, I'd be surprised if someone picks Nwaba up off waivers. _________________ LakersGround's Terms of Service

I want us to keep him. Loved his play in summer league and we need his defense. I think he has only 500k above a vet min. Not sure that would be enough to clear space for KCP. Maybe we move someone else?

I don't think vet minimum contracts count against the cap. Signing Nwaba isn't a problem if he clears waivers. I'm assuming we can overcome the empty roster cap hold by signing another minimum contract. |

Good point on Brewer. Forgot he's coming off the books. At this point I would even package a second rounder with Brewer to get one second rounder back. |

I really never saw the point of the Brewer contract, his skills are declining and what is left of them is duplicatable by other roster players. |

That just doesn't seem like much of a reason to trade for a 7 million dollar player. Maybe I'm missing something. |

No news of a waiver pickup. Feeling better about his return. |

Brewer's salary matched Lou's so it made the financials of the trade work. Agree it would have been preferable to have Brewer's contract end last season. I think we were lucky to be able to get a first rounder out of Houston for Lou, so Brewer's contract was the price we paid. _________________ R.I.P. Doc Buss |
