Paul had his moments, but it was an impossible task to follow a legend.

Out of all of the announcers that followed Chick, Marge Hearn mentioned that the young man who did the games on radio was quite good (Spero).

Spero was great but he just didn't bleed purple and gold. He wanted to do other things and that's fine.

I liked Sunderland. Actually I was cool with everyone before Bill Mac, who sounds like an amateur.

Paul's enthusiasm certainly made him nice to listen to.

Joel is actually a pretty good announcer, it's just his AWFUL chemistry with Stu made it seem otherwise.

Too loud for my taste. He really sucked up to Stu too.

Meyers was superb.

The Lakers really need to move on from Stu. He's done enough and I think anyone they bring in is going to be weighed down by him.

Spero Dedes was great on the radio. Thought he'd eventually get the nod.

Spero, hands down, amongst the human beings.

Chick, however, was not human, and pretty much invented 90% of the basketball broadcast lexicon. His command of the action and ability to communicate it clearly was . . . astonishing.

Paul was good. A slight homer, but not over the top. He worked well with Stu, which helped.

I thought Joel Meyers was a good play by play guy, but he didn't really know basketball all that well. I think Stu caught onto this and just never ceased to call him out on it.

Spero (who I know personally) is an excellent play by play guy, but I always had one issue with him on radio: He called plays well after they had happened and you could essentially tell from crowd noise what had happened by the time he spit it out. I had always hoped they'd move him to TV with Stu and that would've been perfect. Alas...

oh GOD! please get rid of Billy Mac! Sometimes I don't watch the telecast so I can listen to John Ireland and Mychael Thompson.

80% of the time I feel like Billy Mac has no idea what's going on on the court....

"Looks good... is good!"

Sundy was OK. He used to get absolutely skewered around here though.

Stu's main problem - though I agree with nearly every point in TrebleClef's excellent thread - is that he disagrees with a majority of what his announcing partner says. This was especially apparent with Joel, but also definitely still a problem with Billy Mac. Now, it is certainly true that both Joel and Billy Mac say some pretty dumb things, but Stu does not need to explicitly disagree with them so often.

Sundy was just the bees knees in every facet of announcing prowess. Case in point: His call on that epic Kobe shot against the Blazers in the last game of the reg season that year.

That call of Sundy's is forever burned in my brain, down to the crack in his voice in the middle of the scream . As someone else said, he had an impossible task following a legend. In hindsight, the guy was a real pro and seemed to love being with the Lakers. He never should've been let go.

Joel Meyers was good as well, but Grumpy Stu seemed to squeeze him out. It's no surprise to me that Stu prefers a lackey like Billy Mac who he can steamroll whenever he pleases. We won't have a quality play by play guy until the old fart is released.

I think both Stu and Billy Mac need to go, to be honest. Spero would be a great choice and then I would take Bill Walton as the other guy.

No problem. It's pretty natural to want to use it as shorthand for "With the exception of (Chick)...".
