Battle Tanks Part II… I sat down to this one thinking it would be pretty tough to lose. Then, Luke went for a starting lineup change, adding Nwaba to the starters instead of Nick and putting Zubac out there finally.

That was just enough chaos to get things out of sync.

Jordan Clarkson, however, had other plans. He dropped the best offensive game of his career by scoring 30 points while dishing a team-high 8 assists in the process. This was the balanced attack from JC we saw more of in his rookie season (or pre Lou Williams). Sensational game by him tonight.

As a result, the game went down to the wire. The Sixers were able to score while the Lakers couldn’t execute cleanly in the final minute. Randle had a chance to win it with a 45-footer at the buzzer but no miracle.

And it’s for the best. With the Sixers owning our pick if it’s not a top 3, they had all the incentive in the world to lose this one. The Sixers took the 118-116 win and the Lakers organization is fine with that in our bizarro world of tanking.

Russell -- -- Pretty awful game from Russell tonight. He went a little braindead in the final minute of the first half on a play that will make Shaqtin’ A Fool. He had an inbounds he wanted rolling up court, but it was rolled toward the sideline, he tried to dribble it off the floor and instead tripped it up and booted it out of bounds as he fell. His perimeter shot wasn’t there all night. He had a few turnovers after really looking good in that regard lately. On the bright side, he did have 7 assists, including a pretty one to Nwaba for a slam. I certainly don’t think the Nwaba, Ingram, Randle trio that started with him helped the floor spacing and I think that manifested itself a little in Russell forcing some shots versus giving it up to a big to shoot. Pick and pop bigs make the game so much easier for a PG. See Nance with that open look from three late in the game. You get that kind of thing with consistency and Russell’s spacing and looks improve. Switching up the lineup on a PG with two new players is also a bit of a wrench for a young guy, so that was another challenge. “It’s always tough playing with a new group of guys, but that’s no excuse,” Russell said. Another key poor play from Russell in the final minute: They were trying to get an oop to the rim for Ingram, but the play busted and Russell wasn’t quite aware of the shotclock which was at 5 out of the timeout and had to force up a prayer that missed with 24 seconds left. Luke took blame for not reminding the players of the shotclock (where were Luke’s assistants?) but Russell should have also been aware as PG. “I definitely should have known,” Russell said. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 5-17 shooting (1-6 from three) to go with 4 boards, 7 assists, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 33 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: He curled off the pinch post and took it down the middle of the lane for a layup to start the game. He got to the middle off a high screen and missed the 18-footer. He missed a 17-foot pull-up. He let a man fly by, moved in a few steps and hit the baseline jumper. He kicked a dribble out of bounds trying to get past a couple defenders in transition. He missed a floater in the lane. His interior pass was picked off, dunk the other way. He missed a baseline jumper. He punched the release on a wing three and missed. He missed a three, this time holding the post. He hit Zubac for a score off the two-man game. He sank a wing three in transition off the catch. He tripped over a ball in the backcourt right out of bounds, wow, that’s what a last-place team looks like (that will make Shaqtin’ a Fool). Dumb foul on the subsequent inbounds after gambling for a steal on the perimeter, sheesh. Second Half: He missed a fade in the lane. He lost his man and gave up a dunk. He swished a baseline jumper on iso. He missed a wing three. He couldn’t finish a drive. Way off on a three trailing the break. He scored a layup on the cherry picking outlet sequence after a Randle turnover on one end, then a bad play by the Sixers. He attacked and hit Nwaba backdoor for the slam. He missed the step-back wing jumper, not a great look. It looked like he was unaware of the shotclock out of a timeout but he missed the three at the buzzer with 24.4 seconds left.

Randle -- -- It would have been interesting if Randle had a couple more seconds left on the clock (maybe 6.5 on the clock instead of 4) at the end of the game. He had to throw up a running three at the buzzer, but if he had time to get to the rim? I would have liked to see what goes down in that scenario. Good numbers from him with 21 and 12 boards. I think he probably should have had a couple less FGAs in the statsheet that were fouls not called. So he might have been a little more efficient had the refs not missed a couple. Some nice plays by Randle with timely spin moves on his drives, defenders going down off the contact, but refs don’t like to blow the whistle on those because the offensive player is changing directions. So while guys went down, Randle scored. He had a few plays in this one where he just overpowered men. There was also play that I think might become more of a bread-and-butter one for him as his career evolves. He got the D to back up off the dribble and Randle pulled up for the freethrow jumper and hit it. That’s getting to a good spot on the floor and taking the high percentage shot that the D gives you instead of always forcing it into contact or for runners. Hope to see more and more of that. The Stats: He scored 21 points on 8-18 shooting (0-3 from three, 5-6 from the line) to go with 12 boards, 3 assists, 3 turnovers, 2 blocks and 5 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He attacked across the lane to his right and hit the fade. His post entry was picked off. He got tapped on a three on a kickout. He missed on a drive, got it back and airballed the next attempt, expecting a whistle. He overpowered his man on a spin in the post and banked in the jumphook. He hit the lefty jumphook across the middle of the lane. He iso’d and missed the tough fade, just beating the shotclock. Great help D to reject a dunk at the last second (looked like he got some wrist, but good help D regardless). He got his man backing up and he hit the pull-up at the FT line. He hit the floor for a loose ball and was fouled, he made both FTs. He had 10 points on 4-8 shooting and 6 boards. Second Half: He banked in a short runner in transition. He missed a wing three. He should have been on the line after an offensive board, getting slapped right on the arm. He overpowered a defender and scored the layup. He spun in transition and scored the layup as the defender went down. He drew FTs on the screen-roll, he made one. He surprised Clarkson with a pass in transition, turnover (it was a little hot). He spun in the lane and missed the jumphook. He threw a pass away trying to thread it. He pushed out the Nance steal and scored a layup over the defender. He was fouled rolling to the hoop (his shot attempt looked goaltended), he made both FTs. He couldn’t finish with his right on a drive right. He couldn’t finish a layup in the paint off the bounce pass from Clarkson as it was challenged well. He missed a running halfcourter at the buzzer that would have won it, tough look but good push out off the rebound without a timeout…just not enough time.

Ingram -- -- He started out this game pretty effective, aggressively attacking (finishes with his left at high speed) or hitting turnarounds in the post (made those look easy). Then his game quieted down a little. That was a great opening stretch, though. Again, flashes of the future but we need him to put it together for longer, consistent stretches. Defensively, some good moments on shot challenges and deflecting passes. Pretty crazy when you think about it...the Lakers starting a couple of teenagers. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-9 shooting (0-3 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 3 turnovers, 3 steals, 2 blocks and 1 foul in 28 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He attacked to his right and swished the pull-up from midrange. He lost the handle on a drive. He attacked strong to his left and finished with his right on the layup. He missed a wing three. He couldn’t handle an interior feed from Clarkson. He pushed out a steal, took it the distance and scored the lefty layup. Great bullet feed off the dribble with the left hand for the finish in transition. Nice job on the defensive glass to pull it down in a crowd. He swished a turnaround over a smaller guard. He swished another turnaround working the post. He blocked a shot and tried to save it. He missed a halfcourter at the buzzer. Second Half: Off the mark on the post feed, turnover. He missed a sideline three. He ate up his man on a drive to force a brick. Lazy perimeter pass, turnover. He knocked away a kickout. He knocked a pass loose to ignite a break. Not close on a turnaround after nearly losing control of it. He was fouled on a turnaround, he made both FTs.

Zubac -- -- He got the start and promptly had 4 blocks in about 4 minutes (career high). “They were just going at the rim, so I tried to block shots,” Ivica said (the quote sounds better in his accent). He had an excellent first couple of defensive stops against Okafor, but then had trouble with him the rest of the way. Good experience for him. He’s looking a lot thinner than this summer. He’ll be replacing all that baby fat with muscle and I think that will help his post D a lot more. Loved the help D early on. So much two-way potential there. Offensively, he had some soft touch around the rim and also stretched the floor. Still waiting for him to take a three sometime (it was certainly there for him tonight). He’ll have to bounce back tomorrow on the second night of the back-to-back as the starter. Tough minutes, but good experience for him. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-5 shooting (2-3 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 2 turnovers, 4 blocks and 2 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He rejected a layup on help D. He blocked another one out of bounds a couple possessions later. He forced Okafor into a travel on a challenge. He rejected Okafor’s iso post attack and controlled, just ate him up. He swatted another player next time down. Soft touch on the floater when Clarkson set him on the two-man game. He stepped on the baseline on a post move, turnover. He swished an 18-footer. He powered in an And-1 in transition, he made the FT. He hit the short one in the lane after an excellent screen on the screen-roll. Second Half: Low position sealing Okafor and he drew FTs on the attempt, he made one. He missed a floater in the lane. He forced a pass in the paint, turnover.

Nwaba -- -- He’s certainly getting a good opportunity with his 10-day contracts, now moved into the starting lineup. Luke wanted to keep Clarkson with as much minutes as he could ballhandling, so kept him on the bench. Nwaba had some moments on D (great rejection out of bounds). He also had a monster slam late in the game when Russell found him cutting. Not a lot of minutes, but fun seeing him out there. Make the most of them. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 1-3 shooting (0-1 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 block and 2 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He missed a sideline three on a kickout (not a bad looking attempt). Second Half: He attacked a seam and drew FTs, he made both. He knocked an offensive board off a man to regain possession. He missed a layup in transition. He attacked down the middle of the paint, spun and drew FTs, he made both. He slammed on the baseline cut when Russell was attacking to find him. He rejected a layup out of bounds.

Clarkson -- -- “Tonight he put it all together,” Luke said. Easily his best game of the year for him and probably the best of his career, certainly offensively as he tied his career high with 30 points. Combine that with the 8 assists? Yuuge game for JC. Superb first half with 10 points on 5-9 shooting and 5 assists. Excellent mix of the scoring and playmaking. He throttled that up in the second half, getting into the heart of the D again and again. His three ball wasn’t a factor and the Sixers probably should have tried to make him for of a shooter, but he ate up any space they gave him, attacking the paint with speed and elevating for easy finishes. The beauty in this one, however, was he mixed the playmaking like he used to in his rookie season. Luke started Nwaba instead of Clarkson because he wanted to keep Clarkson as the primary ballhandler for the bench. That paid off. Luke also liked how JC was aware of mistakes he made not passing the ball. He hasn’t had an assist game like this since his rookie year. “I’m trying to find that balance again,” Clarkson said. Great job also getting the whistle and getting to the line. That part of his game has really picked up recently. Good trend. Defensively, he had some good moments like breaking up a lob, but he also got burned like a few other Lakers on guys leaking out after he put up a shot. We really hadn’t seen him make any big leaps in his game this year. This was a big step forward. Loved this game from JC. Hopefully, he’s finding that sweet spot with his game now that Lou is gone and he has the ball in his hands more. The Stats: He scored 30 points on 10-16 (0-2 from three, 10-11 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 8 assists, 2 turnovers, 1 steal, 1 block and no fouls in 34 minutes. He was a +6. The Action: He worked the two-man game to Zubac for the floater. He missed a leaner in the paint. He attacked into the chest of the help defender and hit the And-1 runner, he made the FT. He attacked off the high screen, took contact and somehow no-looked up and in a prayer for the And-1, he made the FT. Awful pass on an oop, not even close to Nance. He attacked off a nice Nance screen, got deep and hit the little running hook. He spun away from a closeout in the corner, attacked baseline and wrapped a no-looker around a defender to Black for the dunk. Bad iso and he missed the tough fallaway. Not close on a three. First step by his defender and he scored the layup. He missed a wing three. Great job breaking up a lob pass. He attacked from the corner, hung around the defender and scooped in a layup. Second Half: He missed a runner, but recovered it. He missed a 16-footer. He curled into the lane and drew FTs, he made both. He was fouled pushing out the break, he made both FTs. He was fouled on leakout, he made both FTs. He attacked the paint and scooped in a layup around the help. Quick first step baseline and he scored an And-1 layup, he made the FT. He lobbed to Brewer on the break. His interior pass to a big was picked off. He attacked off the screen and hit Brewer diving to the hoop behind him for the layup. He follow tipped in a missed layup by a teammate in transition. He attacked, spun around the defender and scored a layup with his left. He probed baseline, spun and swished the short jumper. He was fouled on a drive with 15 seconds left down 3, he made just one FT, ouch.

Nance -- -- He swished a corner three with a few seconds left. Sweet looking jumper to cut it to 1 point in the final seconds and move the game from a two possession game to a one possession game. That was big AND it was his second three of the game. Definitely, like see our bigs stretching their game a little more in this last part of the season. Hopefully, they can become competent and confident in those three balls. On D, he was disruptive with the 4 steals. He and Ingram have that length and athleticism where I want to see more of that from that duo. They combined for 7 steals tonight. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-4 shooting (2-3 from three, 0-1 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 4 steals and 1 foul in 22 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: No hesitation on a kickout and he drained the three. He knocked away a post entry pass for a stop. He drew a whistle and banked in a one-handed And-1, he missed the FT. Second Half: He airballed a corner three off a really low kickout. He swiped the ball from Okafor on help D. He pressured his man but gave up the layup on the drive.

Black -- -- He was moved back to the bench for Zubac. This move was coming as Tarik had been struggling with that role. Hopefully, he can find his mojo again with the second unit. Neither he nor Zubac finished this game as we went with a Randle/Nance duo. Scoring wise, he had some points set up for him by Clarkson and Ingram (both great passes to him right in scoring position). He also had a putback working on the glass. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-5 shooting to go with 4 boards (3 offensive), 1 assist, 1 steal and 3 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a +6. The Action: He missed a short one off the interior feed from Clarkson. Great rim run and Ingram hit him in stride for the finish. He dunked off the drive and dish from Clarkson. Bad reach on a deep attempt from two and he gave up FTs. He pulled the ball out of a crowd and hit Ennis cutting for the And-1. He slapped a ball loose for the stop. Second Half: He choked a putback. He cleaned up a missed drive with the putback.

Brewer -- -- Pretty quiet night in spot duty. He had one of the highlight plays of the game with a lob dunk in transition. He also had another finish trailing Clarkson who had just run a two-man game, taking the pass and finishing. That was a set play I’d like to see more of. Clarkson collapsing the D, but we’re giving him an outlet for a pass once that pressure comes instead of him trying to always finish. He was going to the rim in this game whenever he could. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-6 shooting to go with 1 foul in 10 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He missed the runner in the lane. Second Half: He missed a layup curling into the lane to his left. He slammed the lob on the break. He was blocked on a reverse. He scored a layup off the drive and dish from Clarkson as he trailed him with a dive cut. He missed an off-balance drive to his left.

Ennis -- -- Tale of two halves for him. The first half, he had some good scoring moments: baseline jumper, an And-1 cutting off ball and a three off a dribble handoff. Second half was bad decisions, especially in transition. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-5 shooting (1-2 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 2 assists, 2 turnovers, 1 steal and 5 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He sank a baseline jumper of an early offense screen. He curled into the lane and Black found him for the And-1, he made the FT. He sank a three off the DHO from Nance. He threw a pass away on the break. Second Half: He missed a wing three. He used an off arm in transition and was called for it. He attacked in transition and was owned badly (give it up).

Walton -- -- He moved Zubac and Nwaba into the starting lineup… Nwaba out for Clarkson, Lakers down 5 midway through the quarter… Lakers down 6 when Zubac sat for Black… Nance in for Randle, down 7… Ennis in for Russell down 5… The Lakers trailed 32-27 after the first quarter… Black, Nance, Brewer, Clarkson, Ennis in… They caught the Sixers at 38-38… Randle in for Black, Lakers down 4… Ingram and Russell back in for Brewer and Clarkson, Lakers down 2… Down 2, Clarkson back in for Ennis… Zubac back in with 5:33 left, Lakers down 5… They were tied 65-65. The Lakers had 8 blocks. Lakers struggled with their transition D, however, especially off long missed jumpers (they gave up 14 points on the break)… Down 8, Clarkson in for Nwaba after a 7-0 Sixer run… Black in, Lakers offense going dry 2-12 to start the third… An 8-0 run by the Lakers cut it to 4… The Lakers trailed 93-85 heading into the fourth… Black, Nance, Brewer, Clarkson, Ennis to start the quarter… Expert tankers, the Sixers quickly got in the penalty after 90 seconds… Nwaba in for Black, Lakers down 6… Clarkson out midway through the quarter as the Lakers went to the starters but with Nance instead of Zubac… Timeout down 3 with 19 seconds left. Clarkson hot but not from three, Russell cold. What will they do? Clarkson with a quick drive for a foul and FTs… Down 4 with 12 seconds left, Nance swished a three as the D was sucked toward Russell…

Thanks DB.

Few observations...

1. Love the element of defense Nwaba brings. Even if we end up not keeping him, it shows that we need a defensive sieve in our starting lineup to change the behaviors of our offense-first guys.

2. Like seeing the closing lineup of our core future, DLo / JC / BI / JR / Nance Jr. Invaluable experience for these guys.

3. I hope Sixers are not gaming us by having Okafor keep going off on us. I hope FO doesntt overpay for him this summer. JC + cap fillers? I wont be as mad. My pref is to see if we can pry WCS from Kings for decent price. I rather have 1-2 defensive players to balance out our starting lineup next yr.

4. Zubac is legit. Prolly catch heat by I will repeat what I said before, I see lot of M. Gasol in him.

Thanks DB. 16 games to go. Ugh. At least no more conditional pick quandaries to worry about after lotto day.

As long as we look entertaining and fun to watch I can accept loses as long as the youth is progressing.

Zubac looked really good tonight but as before he gets physically bullied by players his size or better on the defensive end. As DB stated he hopefully will continue to improve physically during the off season.

I would also like to see him develop a bit of a nasty streak. He is too nice / soft right now when the other players bully him. I want to see him push back more.

Definitely. He had a grown man move a few games back that looked great. Need to see more of that.

Thankful that you had a good game to breakdown

Observations

Sir Charles shared that when he watched the game against the Suns, it was like watching a NCAA game because the players were so young. That same review can be applied to this game, especially since the average age of the players thebLakersnput on the court was 21 years old

Lakers always seem to play better against the bottom dweller teams that play bad defense that allows them to get confidence

Interesting the one of the worst offensive teams (76ers) were able to get 65 points by halftime.

Could somebody share what adjustments the 76ers made that limited Zubac's opportunities to block shots in the 2nd half

As Zubac's footwork continues to improve, he will be able to more effectively guard centers like Okafor who are presently more mobile than he is. Maybe more one-on-one coaching from Kareem is his future.

Once Zubac and Ingram developed the mental toughness and focus to have mean intentions (hello Black Mamba), they will be a force

Since DLO and Julius (along with JC) got together at the beginning of the reason recognizing they have been given the opportunity to lead this team - have they been successful or maybe their skillset is more suited for different roles
