The Altercation… The Lakers were putting up a fight, about to trim the Bucks lead to single digits on a fast break late in the third quarter. Nick Young took exception to a hard foul on the break and shoved the defender. Nance, Ingram, Russell and Zubac all jumped into the scrum. Young were ejected. Monroe ejected for shoving Nick in the neck. Russell ejected for shoving Monroe.

There’s an older story here that most remember. Think back to a team a few seasons ago that didn’t have Nick’s back during another fight in a Suns game…Young calling out his teammates afterward. Think back to last year, as well, and the frosty relationship with Russell and Young, but Russell now going with him to the locker room after having his back.

“Loved the way the young guys stepped up as a team,” Nick said, impressed that all the guys were in the mix for him.

Luke loved it, but was fired up after the game about the refs ejecting Russell instead of just Nick and Monroe, and the Lakers getting more techs during that skirmish.

“If D’Angelo didn’t push him, I would have been pissed off at D’Angelo,” Luke said. “He did the right thing. So for the NBA to say that the two of them did the same thing and just cancel each other is absolute crap to me. Because one, D’Angelo just shoved him in the back. Monroe grabbed him [Nick] by the neck. I don’t know if he was mad that Zubac was kicking his butt all night long out there but you grab someone by the neck, that’s not right.”

Luke was also pissed that the Bucks staff pushed Ingram.

“Don’t touch my damn players because if that’s okay I’m sure we can find a couple people in L.A. who want that job working for the Lakers,” he said.

Back to the game. After trailing by 18, they were down just 7 heading into the fourth right after the incident. They’d battle back and forth, the Lakers deep bench in the mix as well now.

Those technicals would come to play as the Lakers cut the lead to down to 4 in the final minute. Those extra points turning this into a two possession game. It would have also helped had the Lakers not missed 10 of their own FTs (Nwaba had a great And-1 dunk in the final minute, but missed key FT to cut it to 3).

“In the second half I loved the way our guys played,” Luke said. “The passion they played with, the energy, the fight. Really pleased with it against a team that is playing as well as anyone in the league right now.”

The Lakers lost 107-103. A competitive effort with good fight from the Laker youth and in the tank standings, the Lakers stay strong. I think this all the organization wants right…competitive games with the young guys making progress on their games, but ultimately the Lakers taking another L.

Randle -- -- He had 7 boards and 5 assists at the half to go on a triple-double alert. The scoring never came around but the assists and boards were in the range. He was ticked at some of the no calls as the refs were letting a lot go under the hoop, which should play to Randle’s advantage. He probably should have been knocking guys around some more. The Bucks have some length out there that make it tricky. Still, that’s where a well-rounded game with a perimeter shot allows you to manufacture some points. The Bucks scouted Randle pretty well in this one. They even jumped in front of one of his kickbacks to cause problems. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-6 shooting (0-1 from three, 2-4 from the line) to go with 12 boards (5 offensive), 5 turnovers, 1 block and 2 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He missed a wing three on our first trip down court. His kickout was picked off. He scored an easy putback on great position. Great rotation to block a three on help D. He curled into the lane, got blocked, got it back and was blocked again. He couldn’t secure a missed FT on D. He missed a jumphook across the lane. He setup Nick for the wing three. He yanked out a defensive board, pushed, it out, hung and no-looked it to Zubac for the dunk. He was fouled on the perimeter, he made one FT. He crashed the offensive glass on a missed FT for an offensive board, then pulled down another offensive board off another Laker miss and was stripped at the buzzer. Second Half: He misfired a pass out of bounds. He was stripped under the hoop. He attacked, lost his footing on a spin and traveled. He attacked a crowd, all kinds of contact, missed and lost the ball on the offensive rebound. He was called for a tech. He attacked Giannis out of a timeout and was fouled with 7.9 seconds left down 4, he made one FT.

Ingram -- -- What do you like better? Ingram snarling and barking and having to get shoved back in the middle of the altercation? Or him showing the bite with his bark out of a timeout in the fourth quarter, when he iso’d on Giannis, attacked baseline and crammed a dunk in his face? Loved that. “I just know when I get that close to the basket, I can’t go up soft,” Ingram said. Wish they didn’t toss Russell, either, as it would have been nice to see him playing pissed off, as well. “That’s how we have to start off games,” Ingram said of the team being fired up and angry. Foul trouble limited his play in the first half to just 10 minutes. He got a full half of run in the second half. Defensively, he was solid against Middleton. They switched too easily and Clarkson made those two-man D sequences very tough on Ingram with some miscommunication, as well. But when he matched up with him, he made it tough. He took a charge and had a block late in the game. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-11 shooting (1-4 from three, 2-4 from the line) to go with 1 board, 4 assists, 1 turnover, 2 steals, 1 block and 3 fouls in 34:30. He was a +6. The Action: He attacked the paint and couldn’t finish. He drew a double and fed Zubac for the jumper. Nice cut weakside to take a pass but he missed the layup. Aggressive attack across the lane and he set up Zubac for the layup. Soft bounce on a wing three and it dropped. He forced an airball on a closeout. He threw a pass away then fouled in transition and had to sit with his third. Second Half: He swished a wing jumper on the first play of the half. Nice job taking a charge on help D on a good team D sequence from multiple players. He attacked the pressure D on the perimeter and drew FTs, he made one. Nice job avoiding contact and forcing his man into an airball. He nearly banked in a three, but a good job hustling back in transition to steal the outlet. He attacked the rim and couldn’t finish. Great look spotting Zubac free under the hoop for the layup. He missed a corner three on a kickout. He attacked the paint and muscled in a tough one after taking contact. He created against the shotclock, pumpfaked Middleton and drew FTs, he made one. He missed a long jumper. He faced up on Giannis, attacked baseline (might have stepped out of bounds on the push off), took off and threw down over Giannis and the help defender. He iso’d and missed the pull-up from 17 feet. He blocked a layup on the other end. He drew a charge on Giannis, great D beating him to the spot.

Clarkson -- -- On the good side, I thought he was gathering himself a little better with his three ball. Some of those threes were up against clock situations tonight, but overall that part of his game looked better. Some really awful PG moments, however, in this one. He was barely playmaking, but had more turnovers than assists and never looked comfortable in any kind of playmaking role. As the game went along, he started keeping the ball more and was guilty of a several OC drives where he wasn’t close on the finishes. Defensively, he was getting owned by Middleton anytime they matched up. The Bucks were actively seeking that matchup out and getting Clarkson to switch. Then he’d also give up dribble penetration to his own man to cause the Lakers D to collapse (just lost and horrible positioning). So while he led the team in scoring, it was high volume and his D was pretty poor in this one. The Stats: He scored 21 points on 8-20 shooting (4-11 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 3 turnovers, 1 steal, 1 block and 2 fouls in 37:32. He was a -9. The Action: He attacked in transition and scooped in a runner. He missed a runner across the lane. He threw a pass away trying to run a two-man game, dunk the other way. Another two-man sequence and another turnover on the pass for transition points. He missed a three next time down. He slapped down a pass in the lane to get a stop. Good body control on a kickout and he sank the three. He missed a step-back sideline three. He pound the dribble, attacked a crowd and missed. Second Half: He iso’d and missed a scoop. He changed directions off the dribble, got into the paint and hit the floater. He pulled down a board, pushed it out and missed getting OC on the drive. He was called for stepping out of bounds on a drive and kick. He attacked, wild drive hitting the side of the board, layup the other way. He sank a big three at the end of the fourth. He made a tech FT. He missed an iso three. He missed a forced three. Lost on D, he gave up an And-1 off dribble penetration. He attacked from the wing and hit the runner. Big three off the Randle kickback (love how he gathered himself to get his body in control and then fired…been getting on him about not doing that). He missed a deep three with the shotclock getting low (had more time to create, though). He crossed over and hit a tricky runner over the help D. He missed a forced three in transition. He sank a quick-fire three with 2.5 seconds left to cut it to 2. He missed a corner three at the buzzer.

Zubac -- -- Loved Luke’s comment during his postgame rant about Zubac kicking Monroe’s butt on the court. Zubac led the Lakers with 12 points on 6-11 shooting at the half, getting a good 18 minutes of run. He hit jumpers, finished around the rim and got out on the break for scores. He had just one stint in the second half as we went with some other combinations. But good run for him with the 29 minutes and he came through with the 18-8. With Monroe’s ejection Luke didn’t feel the need to go big in the fourth. Defensively, no blocks in this one and he didn’t alter shots as well as you would have liked. Still, he and Ingram hardly looked like 19-year-olds in this one…both of them were even in the mix during the Russell/Young ejection. Love that. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 9-15 shooting to go with 8 boards, 1 assist and 2 fouls in 29:26. He was a -6. The Action: He dunked off the drive and dish from Nick. He measured and swished the wing jumper. He took an interior feed, got the defender on his hip and hit the short one-hander. He missed the lefty jumphook on iso. He took a pass on the BLOB and he swished the baseline jumper. Great effort to get an offensive board behind a man, but he couldn’t hit the short one. He short-armed a floater (seemed like he wasn’t sure what he wanted to do on that one, should have gone glass from there). He grabbed a high entry pass in semi-transition, let a man fly by and scored the layup. His floater was blocked. He was fouled on a jumper with no call while trying to beat the shotclock (so obvious). Great job running the floor with Randle after they battled for the defensive glass and Randle hit him for the dunk. Second Half: He scored a layup after sealing a fronting defender to take the pass. He kept an offensive board alive and then got the putback to go on the second tip attempt. He was blocked trying to finish a sweet feed from Ingram. He cut under the hoop off a Nick screen, took the pass and scored a layup.

Young -- -- Great job early in this game attacking the paint after hitting his first three. He was getting to the rim for finishes and even a dump off to Zubac for a dunk. Love seeing that. Late in the game, he didn’t like a hard foul on the breakaway and shoved the defender. Nick already had a tech earlier in the game, so he was tossed. “Greg Monroe got a good shove it, sneak side, blind side,” Nick said. All the Lakers had his back as mentioned. They seemed to get a little fired up after that and locked in for a much better fourth quarter than we’ve seen lately. As mentioned, it’s important he’s out there because he’ll help space the floor and give the changed lineups a little more stability. Last game, he was rusty. Tonight, he looked more like himself. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 6-11 shooting (4-8 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists and 2 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He swished a three off the Zubac handoff and screen. Quick attack off the three line on his next touch and he scored the layup. He attacked off the three line and yelled as he hammered over the D. He attacked off the three line again, drew the D and fed Zubac for the dunk. He missed a wing three off the opposite side on the loop play. He picked up a tech. He swished a wing three off the two-man sequence with Randle. He missed a wing three from the other side next time down. Second Half: He missed a wing three, getting tapped. He missed a midrange pull-up. He swished a wing three in transition. He sank a wing three on a kickout from Nance.

Russell -- -- Good game by Russell. He was probably on his way to a 20-point or so performance. He led the bench with 9 points in 16 minutes in the first half. He was aggressive attacking the rim and doing it with a little more speed. His three ball also looked much more confident than the last two. He wasn’t just flinging it up there, he was more locked in. He was ejected in the third quarter with Nick when he shoved Monroe who had shoved Nick. I don’t mind this a bit. Great to see, actually, especially since it was Nick. “It was just reaction. It was good to see everybody right there,” Russell said. Playmaking-wise, he hasn’t played a lot of minutes at all with Nance this season. So I’m curious to see if any chemistry can develop between those two. In the first half, you could see Russell talking to Nance about a play where Nance was supposed to pop out for a pass and wasn’t there. Nance also wasn’t ready for a pass to him on the baseline that hit him in the hands. That resulted in Russell’s two turnovers. So one benefit of Russell on the bench right now is finally seeing those two getting minutes together. The Stats: He had 14 points on 5-9 shooting (2-3 from three, 2-5 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 2 assists, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 21 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He hit Ingram cross-court for a three. He overthrew brewer cutting, turnover. He sank a pull-up wing jumper. Quick change of pace on the attack to his left, but off the mark on the finish attempt. He missed a baseline pull-up. He sank a wing three on a swing pass, just beating the shotclock. He threw a pass out of bounds on a ball reverse expecting a big to be there. Aggressive attack drawing FTs on contact near the rim, he made one. His layup was blocked (close to a goaltend). He swished a wing three on the high pinch post sequence. He airballed a tough corner three trying to beat the shotclock. He slipped on a drive and was tied up, he was then held on the jumpball by a big and drew FTs, he missed both. Second Half: He spotted Nick cross court for the three in transition. He got a defender on his hip and scored a layup on a baseline drive. He attacked from the wing off the Nance screen, curling around his man and he scored the And-1 layup high off the glass, he made the FT.

Nance -- -- Manly game from Larry. He was playing through pain, earning freethrows, hustling for loose balls, disruptive on D. Some nice hustle plays on defense, whether it was in transition just getting back and causing trouble or jumping passing lanes for steals. He led the team with the 4 steals. He also got a shove in during the altercation but wasn’t ejected like Russell. Weird decision by the refs. Larry was in pain with that wrist again. You can see it in his finishes as he tries to do it softly. After that incident, however, Larry tried to cram a nasty over a defender. He was fired up like the other guys. Good experience for them. They need to play with that chip on the shoulder from the start of games. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 3-6 shooting (0-2 from three, 7-7 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 2 turnovers, 4 steals and 4 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: Nice hustle in transition to force a turnover, he’ll get no credit in the stat sheet for that. Short on a wing three. He missed the floater off a feed from Russell. He swished the wing jumper off a drive and kick from Brewer. He swiped a perimeter pass and took it for the soft finish. He tied up a man jumping a passing lane again. He took his eye off a pass from Russell, turnover. Second Half: He hurt his wrist rolling to the hoop and trying to finish, he powered through it to knock down both of his FTs. Excellent kickout to Nick next time down for a three. He jumped a passing lane, pushed it out and somehow muscled in the And-1 layup after getting grabbed, he made the FT. He missed a three, we got the board, Larry cut, took the pass and got fouled trying for a massive throwdown, he made both FTs. His interior feed was picked off. He slapped a handoff away and was fouled on the bustout, he made both to cut it to 6.

Brewer -- -- Just one stint in the first half in this one. Even after our ejections, he didn’t re-enter the game. Nothing to report in this one. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting and had 1 board, 3 assists and 1 foul in 6:49 of action. He was a -5. The Action: He missed a tough runner off a slash through the lane. He attacked and hit Nance for the jumper. He gambled for a steal in the post against a bigger man and gave up a layup. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Ennis -- -- A short 3-minute stint in the first half. No impact. The Stats: He didn’t score or shoot in 3 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: Nothing to report. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Robinson -- -- After the third quarter ejections, he was selected to take the freethrows. He made one and then scored another FT later for his only points. Another good moment on a trap in the backcourt to get a turnover to start the fourth quarter. He’s had several of those lately. The Stats: He had 2 points on 0-2 shooting (2-4 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 5:21. He was a +1. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He tried to warm up after getting selected to take Nick’s FTs, he made one. He stripped a ball off a guard in the backcourt trap to get a stop. He attacked from the perimeter and drew FTs, he made one. He missed a tough runner in transition, got it back and was stripped (looked hacked). He was blocked on a jumphook.

Nwaba -- “He was amazing tonight,” Russell said afterward. I’m not sure he was going to play this game with how the Laker rotations were looking. He came in after the Young/Russell ejections. Some great finishes at the rim in this one. He had a huge throwdown to start the fourth quarter and cut the lead to 6. In the final minute he helped force a turnover, get out in transition and throw down a massive And-1 dunk (unfortunately he missed a huge FT that could have cut it to 3). That changed the complexion of the final few possessions as it wasn’t a one-possession ball game. Excellent energy on D (also had a nice block). He had a great stop just before that big dunk in the final minute as he forced Middleton into a bad pass. The Stats: He at 4 points on 2-3 shooting (0-1 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 block and 2 fouls in 12:36. He was a +6. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He rejected a drive out of bounds. Quick attack from the corner and he threw down over the help D to cut it to 5. He grabbed an offensive board and fed Larry cutting for FTs. Great D on Middleton to help force him to throw it away. He took the outlet off that and soared for an And-1 dunk (he couldn’t hit the FT with 38 seconds left to cut it to 3).

Walton -- -- Luke tightened up his rotation in this one… Quick tempo to this one early. The Lakers led 15-12 off some great offense from Nick… Down 1 with 4 minutes left, Nance and Russell came in for Young and Zubac… Ingram out for Brewer, Lakers down 1… Zubac back in for Randle. A bit of a change in the rotation there… Nice BLOB sequence that setup Zubac for the open baseline jumper… The Lakers trailed 31-24 after the first quarter… He started a Zubac, Nance, Brewer, Russell, Ennis lineup… Zubac out for Young, sliding Nance to the C spot… Randle in, having trouble defending Giannis… Lakers fading… Ingram picked up his third foul with 6 minutes and sat for Clarkson… Zubac in for Nance… The Lakers trailed 61-46 at the half. Lakers with 16 assists on 19 makes... The Lakers trailed by 19 when Russell came in for Clarkson who was OC… Nance in for Randle… Nance sparking the Lakers to cut it to 8… Robinson, Nance, Ingram, Nwaba, Clarkson… Nwaba cut it to 6 on a dunk, but they couldn’t continue the rally… Nwaba and Robinson’s lack of range causing the Laker offense issues. Meanwhile, Clarkson’s suckage on D causing issues on the other end… Randle back in for Robinson down 10 with 7:15 left… They trimmed it down to striking distance but were getting nickel and dimed on the calls… They trimmed it down in the final minute but couldn’t get over the hump… Loved Luke’s postgame presser. He was fired up…

Thanks DB! Spot on T&R as always!

I still remember when Young was left hung out to dry by some chicken (bleep) teammates a couple years back. Kinda cool that the very same guy the press tried so hard to brand as Nick Young's enemy, this supposed locker room "cancer," ends up being the guy who follows Nick into the locker room, having just collected a double tech because he wasn't gonna stand for that shove Monroe threw on Nick. Doesn't surprise me that you picked up on this. Think the press will? Screw TMZ, screw Wilbon, screw ESPN.

Way to show some life late in the game Lakers!

Nick is so valuable to this team. We need to either retain him or acquire a similar player

Thanks DB

Larry Nance was awesome with the all out effort tonight. Good thing he won't be playing in summer league so he gets to rest his wrist in the off season.

Lots of fire and effort. Still did not like the fact the guards backed off on the perimeter when the Bucks guards pressured our guards. I would have liked to see them try and break the pressure and get into the middle of the defense.

The essential factor that this young team is learning on the fly is how to play hard...all the time. Last year when they were struggling MWP got a little run. He immediately, by example, showed them what playing hard, especially defensively, looks like.

We're not guaranteed to win when we're playing hard, but we can sure appreciate a chippy four point loss anytime versus a forty point goose egg in the effort department.

Oh, and thanks DB!
