IF....there is a sivil lining and we lose our pick this year. ....we still have a late 1st round...ONE LAST tank as 2018 is a deeper draft. ..maybe not top 3 heavy like this year (Fultz...Ball...Jackson)....
We get a top 5-7 stud...And can lure young talent to influence Westbrook or George to sign. ...or both....then 2019 would be irrelevant because we be a top 4-5 playoff team in west.....hey...gotta think positive

2018 draft could be more top heavy and much thinner.

Every year, I don't believe the Lakers would be top 3 bad, but they prove me wrong every year. So yeah, who knows. Even if we lose the pick this year, I rather D'Lo and Ingram blow up and lead us to the playoffs.
Hamidou Diallo.....youtube his highlights....great character kid...kind of ahead of his time...competitive. ...skilled....stay tuned _________________ True Laker fan from the state of Michigan! No way the 2018 draft will be a weak ass draft reminiscent of the 2016 draft. Very thin draft and I don't see anybody coming up in that draft that would be an instant contributor.

Ayton is going to violate the Pac-12 if he's eligible.
Let's just add one more Top 3 talent this year and call it quits on tank mode. At some point our kids need to grow up, and that might as well start next year. Leave the perennial lottery mindset to teams like PHI.
Why do y'all act like Lonzo Ball, or whomever else we draft, would keep us out of the lottery on their own? It's as if we haven't been drafting 19 year olds every year and expecting this to be the last time. While Lonzo would certainly help, he's no guarantee to propel us into playoff contention. It's still going to be a process.
There are very different interpretations of "lottery" IMO.
In the 2018 draft are we discussing another top 5 pick or a 10-14 range?
I will be disappointed if the lottery balls go against the Lakers next month. Along with all the rest of you, I want that asset. Whether to trade or add a top 3 impact player we shall see.
Contrary to some posts, the Laker organization will not crumble and blow away in the wind if they do not get the pick. Or the 2019 pick too. A disappointment but manageable.
Worst case- Lakers do not get the top 3 pick. They have to focus on picks #28 and #32. Looking at DX or NBAdraft player projections in the 25-45 range there should be a couple of solid role players the Lakers can add.
Lakers also have anywhere from $20- 30M in cap space they can decide to use this year. Potentially an impact starter. Even if they keep the roster intact and just add those three players to the mix. along with Walton's second year of coaching. Add in the presumed development and even marginal improvement of the current young players.
All things considered. I see the Lakers not even close to being in position to "tank". Even with my conservative speculation of the roster I would expect the Lakers to improve into the 30-35 games range. Putting them in the back end of the 2018 lottery.
It may be more fun to fantasize about the top 5 in the draft next year, just do no see the reality of the Lakers being there IMO.
This is my positive spin on the situation. I realize it does not satisfy the "tank" crowd but the Lakers are getting better and they will start climbing that ladder to the playoffs. Maybe not this year but they are climbing out of the cesspool of bottom dwellers!

^I agree - I think this years' squad could have won quite a few more games had they not opted for sitting vets, and the bigger silver lining is development of some young but very good players we already have.
If we miss out on Ball, we get an '18 pick and who knows he could be a decent player in his own right. Pick up a good free agent or two as well and that '19 pick we lose could be late first round, for which we lose 2 second rounders, one of them early second round.
People get tied up in knots and think this is lose at all costs. SMH.
problem is this was the most important year (post-Kobe era) to tank since 2 first rounders are in play based on whether we keep it this year. winning the last game and the one against the Suns was borderline idiotic given PHX is not gonna win another game AND they're in the same division.
