Jerry West wishes the NBA would change its logo
Quote:
West, of course, is a Hall of Famer and former Finals MVP with the Lakers who was instrumental in the early era of the league’s growth before a wildly successful tenure as Lakers GM.
“First of all, I wish that had never gotten out, that logo,” West said. “No I do, really. I’ve said it more than once. It’s flattering that it’s me, and I know it is me, and it is flattering.
“Again, it’s flattering, but if I were the NBA, I would be embarrassed about. I don’t like to do anything to call attention to myself, and when people [call him The Logo], that’s just not who I am, period.

I should be Reggie Miller. He's the embodiment of the new generation NBA: A guy who shot a lot of threes and flopped a lot. _________________ "Suck it up. Don't be a baby. Do your job." - Kobe Bryant

This is one of the few areas where Jerry is talking out of his ass.....he is well aware the NBA will not be changing that Billion Dollar logo recognized worldwide anytime soon, so he can play the "aww shucks" card with no consequences.
This comes up every once in awhile. It's Jerry's personality, and his wishes are understandable, but the logo is too iconic at this point.
I'd rather the NBA create a scholarship fund or a player retirement fund or something along those lines in West's name and pump all the royalty fees they have owed him since 1969 into a worthy cause.

Besides for old fans, most casual and young fans don't know that's a silhouette of Jerry West. Some don't even know who Jerry West is, period. So I'm not sure about the attention that he's talking about. They made a good point on the radio that if you change it to MJ, the obvious choice would be the one hand stretch palming while legs kicking pose, but people will immediately identify that as MJ, not the NBA. So there would be a brand problem. When people see this silhouette, they don't go, "Oh that's Jerry West!" They don't even know.
