Thank you DB! I can't say that enough. I come here after every game and read your write up...it is second to none! Thank you to Mrs. DB as well. I know all of the time spent eats into your family time but we appreciate them loaning you to us to get these out.

This should be an eventful offseason. Fingers crossed we keep our pick, don't trade too much for too little, and that our youngsters improve exponentially in the offseason.

Thanks DB, I really hope we make some great off-season moves so that we'd see those smiles on your posts a lot more often next season.

Hi DB, I love your thoughts and ratings, I'm reading it after every game for more than a decade.

I agree that it is going to be tough to beat GS in the near future, but do you se us as the next GS with the young pieces we have?

I mean, there is no one with huge advanced stats as KAT, Embiid our Jokic.

Ingram is getting better every single month of the season, but he reached average advanced stats just in april.

We can say the same about Russell, his PER is slight above average, BPM slight bellow, his averages for the season are basically the same Ingram had in april, average.

Zubac has the highest PER among our young guns, but not a good BPM, kinda Okafor efficient doing his thing, but not impacting the game overall at this point.

Statistically speaking Nance and Julius are our best players, you can choose any advanced stat and it will point them above average, but in the range you look for elite role players not all stars and far away from franchise players.

I understand the concept of building through the draft and developing young talent so let me ask you, do you think we have the pieces in place to be a title contender just developing the players we have?

The Final Game… This is the Warriors league right now. It’s their ring to lose. Anything less for them is underachieving.

This is a perfect game for Magic and Pelinka to reflect on heading into the offseason. With the ridiculous addition of Durant, the Warriors are stacked with All Stars (make that Superstars) in their prime. If we go for some quick fixes in the offseason to maybe get an All Star in uniform, then what? We aren’t going to compete with the Warriors anytime soon. In fact, it’s really the perfect time for a team to rebuild with youth from the ground up.

Even without Draymond Green, the Warriors starters seemed like they could cruise for the W as they scored 43 points in the first quarter.

The Lakers would trim it to 8 in the second quarter, but that’s as close as they’d get. They trailed big heading into the fourth, played some very spirited D to cut the lead down but eventually fell, 109-94.

“In the fourth quarter, we put a group out there that started flying around on defense and getting into passing lanes and it got a lot of fun when that happens,” Luke said. “Love the way they turned it on at least for the fourth and closed out the season.”

So tomorrow we start the exit interviews and wait until mid-May when our lottery fate will be known.

Will we be on the outside of the top 3? Or will the basketball gods be kind to the Lakers for their end-of-season 5-game win streak? Our fate awaits.

Randle -- -- Some nice off-ball cuts lately to get into scoring position and teammates are finding him. I wish there were a few more games for him to build that into a habit. That’s the challenge for Randle – turning things into habits. This was one of those games where he struggled to impose himself on the opponent consistently. (Draymond might have had his attention if he was playing.) Julius got more engaged in the fourth quarter when we put the pressure on. The energy on the floor then was great and Randle was mixing it up with the rest of the team for some points at the rim and helping the team get stops. Next year is critical for Randle. His third full season. That is usually the make or break season to me. “These guys are getting older and have a ton of experience this year,” Luke said. Now it’s time to start turning those things they’ve learned into habits. Better screen setting and with more consistency (he’s improved). Keep working on that perimeter game. And study the defensive end of the floor as much as possible. “Just got to be more consistent with it,” Randle said of his game. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 6-10 shooting (1-1 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 3 assists, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 24 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: He threw a pass away in transition. Quick feed to Clarkson cutting baseline for the layup. Ingram found him on the dive for an And-1 layup, he made the FT. He scored a layup on the cut off of Robinson’s drive. He missed a wing jumper, not going up straight. He got a mismatch on the rim run and scored the easy layup. He posted up but couldn’t finish the layup. Second Half: He was blocked by the help D after working the post. He cleaned up a blocked shot in transition a few seconds later. He hit a floater down the middle of the lane. He missed the fade in the paint. He grabbed a board, pushed it out and overpowered the D for a layup.

Ingram -- -- Baby Groot seemed to grow up into full size Groot last night, but the Warriors trimmed him back down to size in this one. He struggled to score efficiently and had numerous turnovers. In his 29 minutes, he was a -29 with 5 turnovers. I’m sure this one will leave a bad taste in his mouth after the great game last night. Just fuel the fire for the offseason. He had some nice passing again in this one, but that Warriors D caused all kinds of issues for him. His best play of the night was probably blowing by Durant baseline off an iso sequence for a layup. Still, Luke kind of benched him in this one with all the struggles. But look at the stat sheet…5 boards, 5 assists, 3 steals, 11 points… a little of everything, which shows the potential of his well-rounded game in the future. “I definitely want to go into this offseason attacking all my weaknesses,” Ingram said. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 5-16 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 5 assists, 5 turnovers, 3 steals and 2 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a -29. The Action: He deflected a pass to get a stop. He drew a double and hit Randle in the paint for the And-1. He missed an awkward hook across the lane. He tried to iso, picked up his dribble, then threw the pass away next time down, turnover. He missed a layup in transition. He stepped on the gas in transition and scored the layup easily over the defenders. He attacked the paint, spun and missed the layup. He drew the D on a drive and bounced it to Black for a dunk. He missed a jumper from the top of the key. He finished the transition lob from JC. He missed a pull-up 12-footer. He setup Tarik for FTs in the paint. He got knocked off balance and had missed the toss up at the rim. He threw a pass away in transition (finish that!). He stole it back and found Nance for the dunk shortly later. His man went for a steal, he tried to attack but couldn’t finish over the help D (he wanted the foul on that one). He missed a pull-up wing jumper. He swished a 17-footer out of a timeout. He attacked left, couldn’t finish, but Robinson kept it alive and Ingram was fouled for FTs, he made one. He iso’d on Durant, blew past him baseline and scored the layup. He traveled getting tripped up on a double team at the end of the half. He had 9 points on 4-13 shooting. Second Half: He missed an elbow pull-up on iso to start the half. He deflected a transition pass, then was blocked by Durant on the breakaway layup. He attacked baseline and bounced it to JC for the layup. He worked the two-man game to Nance for the three. He swished a pull-up at the top of the key. He was picked from behind in transition. He got caught in the air and threw another one away a few seconds later.

Clarkson -- -- He led the Lakers with 11 points on 5-9 shooting in the first half. He seemed to be the only Laker to start the game not on his heels. Aggressive and not backing down. However, he had a Shaqtin’ moment when he ducked an incoming inbounds pass in the backcourt and let it go out of bounds. Later, he would throw an inbounds pass away trying to get it to Ennis. Two turnovers on inbounds passes in the backcourt with no D around. Not sure I’ve seen that in a single game. That’s what bad teams do. Despite not hitting his threes or his freethrows, he somehow managed 17 points on 16 shots. He took an elbow to the throat for an inadvertent flagrant in this one for his efforts. Asked what he improved on this year, he said it was a little of everything. “I feel like I played in so many different roles, just being able to adapt to everything,” he said of the season. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 8-16 shooting (1-6 from three, 0-3 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 1 turnover, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a -23. The Action: He sank a three off a high screen for the Lakers first hoop. He missed a tech FT. He scored a layup when Randle found him cutting baseline. He sank a wing pull-up jumper out of the timeout. He ducked when an inbounds pass was thrown to him and it went out of bounds (what are you doing?). He missed a wing three. He attacked in transition and scored the And-1 layup around the big, he missed the FT. He flagged a bounce pass for a steal, then lobbed to Ingram in transition for the score. He probed the paint and hit the short runner. He missed a three at the end of the quarter. He sealed his man nicely but couldn’t hit the floater. He was blocked on a drive but Robinson cleaned up the dribble penetration. Second Half: He missed a wing three on a kcikout. He cut off Ingram’s drive, took the pass and scored the layup. He missed a wing three. Awful lob pass on a perfectly executed play out of a timeout (that blew a sure dunk for BI). He missed a three shortly later. Herky jerky drive off the three line and he scored the layup. He missed a tech. He iso’d and missed a turnaround. Bad pass, points the other way. He spun a hard dribble to himself and hit the floater down the lane.

Nance -- -- He came on strong in the fourth quarter, imposing his will on the glass and on D. That’s the Larry Nance that he needs to be. He just outworked everyone, imposing that length and athleticism all over of the court like a wrecking ball to whatever the Warriors were trying to do. Just look at the hustle stats in this one: 5 offensive boards (11 total boards), 3 steals and 2 blocks. Given minutes, he should always be a double-double with his tools. Bottle that. Bring it like that next season. Some early foul trouble for Nance, but he was able to play without issues the rest of the way. He went 1-3 from three, no hesitation on any of those. This last month or so has been strong. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 6-14 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 11 boards (5 offensive), 2 assists, 3 steals, 2 blocks and 3 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He missed a floater in the paint. Late on a rotation and he picked up his second foul with 8:33 left in the first. He drained a 20-footer. He missed a wing three. He missed a wing jumper. He dunked off the drive and dish from Ingram. He stripped a ball off a defender to get a stop. Second Half: Quick layup working off the two-man game with Ennis. He was blocked on a layup next trip down. Left alone on the ice D and he sank the wing three. He sank a baseline jumper in early offense. Offensive board in a crowd to get us a second chance. He battled for another offensive board but missed the putback. Another offensive board and he fed Ennis on the interior for the layup. He missed a corner three. He swiped a cross-court pass on the other end. He nearly had a steal, hands on the ball, but didn’t get it and we got scored on, but we got the ball to him leaking out after that made hoop for a layup. He couldn’t finish a dunk over McGee. He stripped a man to ignite a break.

Ennis -- -- Starting Huertas or Calderon? Ennis is definitely an improvement. Again, though, he’s working to try to be a backup guard in the league. He’s shown some promise in the Laker system as a two-way guard. It won’t show up in the stats tonight, but he was able to draw a couple of offensive fouls for stops. That’s something we don’t see enough of from the team…really since maybe DFish retired (I think he used to get 50+ offensive foul calls a year). He sank a couple of threes, but couldn’t hit a big one set up for him when we were trying to make our run. Still, he’s got to love Luke calling his number out of a timeout. Tough game for Ennis against the Warriors D overall, though. They were in the passing lanes like crazy and causing turnovers. He was still able to scratch out some points against some top quality D. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-12 shooting (2-6 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 5 assists, 4 turnovers, 1 block and 2 fouls in 38:29. He was a -5. The Action: He clanked a pull-up jumper on our first possession. Nice hesitation dribble as he changed direction and hit the lefty runner across the lane. He swished a three in early offense shortly later. He blew a 2-on-1 breakaway, throwing a lob way too soon to Larry, then he coughed up the pass shortly later. His screen-roll pass was picked off for a dunk the other way. He missed a wing three on a pass back from Nance. Second Half: His kickout was picked off. He missed a layup trying to attack around a big. He set up Larry for the layup off the two-man game. He drew an illegal screen on the other end to get the stop. He drew FTs in transition and made both. He sank a step-back three straight away. He missed a three on his next touch. Not close on a pull-up three. He hit a slashing Brewer for the dunk in transition. He drew another offensive foul on the perimeter to get a stop. He took a bounce pass in transition and rode it up and in. He scored a layup off the interior feed from Nance (he wanted the And-1). He missed a three off an awkwardly run elevator play out of a timeout. He outlet to Nance for the layup.

Brewer -- -- Some great pressure D to try to make something happen in the fourth quarter. He kind of set the tone and the team fed off that. I think Luke’s going to have a lot of fun with him and the guys next year trying to find a defensive lineup that will get after it. We saw some of the makings of that tonight with Brewer out there with Nance and Nwaba. They were flying all over the court, aggressive in the passing lanes and trying to recover for each other. Corey had 4 steals in only 18 minutes. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 4-8 shooting to go with 2 boards, 2 assists, 1 turnover, 4 steals and 4 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He slapped a perimeter pass away, chased it down and dunked. He missed a wing pull-up jumper. Second Half: He was stripped on a drive out of a timeout, uggh. He picked off an inbounds pass in the front court and took it for a dunk. He missed a pull-up jumper. He dunked off a slash in transition that opened the floor for Ennis to find him. He swiped a perimeter pass a few seconds later and hit Nwaba for the dunk. Pressure D in the backcourt and he made sure to bring the clock to the refs attention to get the backcourt violation. He was stripped on the drive. He sank a 10-footer trailing the break. He couldn’t finish a tough one on the break.

Nwaba -- -- I imagine he was probably a little star struck. He seemed a little over his head out there or at least it seemed like it for some stretches. He was tentative and second guessing things. It just felt like one of those games where he wasn’t comfortable at all, but just needed to get this game under his belt. He scored a couple of And-1s at the rim for his points and also had a nice bounce pass to Ennis on the break. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-4 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He missed a reverse. He fumbled a ball, recovered it, then threw it away. He changed directions, attacked the body of the back pedaling big in the restricted area and scored the And-1 layup with ease, he missed the FT. Second Half: Brewer swiped the ball then found Nwaba for the And-1 dunk in transition, he made the FT. Nice bounce pass to Ennis on the break for a layup.

Black -- -- Quiet night from Tarik. He had a couple of scores at the rim and made both of his freethrows. One thing I love about his game this season was his freethrow shooting. He was awful the past couple seasons, but completely turned that around and looked like one of our more automatic FT shooters all season long. Never would have guessed that with all the playing around he was doing with his freethrow stroke the first couple of seasons. I imagine he works on his range this offseason. He’s got some decent post moves, but think about how many shots Zubac can get off by having that midrange and floater to go along with the post game. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-2 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 14 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He dunked off the drive and dish from Ingram. He drew FTs when Ingram found him in the paint, he made both. He scooped up a loose ball and scored the layup. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Robinson -- -- Some passing problems in this one with a bad lob on the break and throwing a kickout away, those were a couple of his 4 turnovers, which you don’t want to see from a big who doesn’t have the ball in his hands a ton. Not a great game from him. The Warrior length seemed to impact all of our bigs tonight. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-5 shooting to go with 4 boards, 1 assist, 4 turnovers and 1 foul in 18 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: He attacked baseline and fed a cutting Randle for the layup. Horrible lob in transition, turnover. Easy transition dunk when no Warrior got back. He missed a quick-fire baseline jumper. He grabbed a blocked shot and scored the putback. Second Half: He threw a kickout away. He attacked off a busted play and was blocked. He curled into the paint and missed the short one.

World Peace -- -- Back to the bench so that we don’t kill him after his exhausting previous night. The Lakers were a +7 in his 4:44 he was on the court in the first half – the only Laker in the positive in that stat as we had a good run. Metta finally scored late in the game off a layup in transition. His last point, however, was off a freethrow with 3.7 seconds left after he stole the ball. Farewell, Metta. I’m sure this was his last game in a Laker uniform…and probably the NBA. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-6 shooting (0-2 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 2 steals and 2 fouls in10 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He missed a layup on a drive. Second Half: He missed a wing three on a kickout. He missed a wing jumper on iso. He missed a corner three. He scored a layup off the Nance steal, getting down floor with him. He missed a three set up for him on what should have been our last shot, but he stole the ball from a Warrior at midcourt as they were trying to run the clock down and he drew FTs with 3.7 seconds left, he made one FT.

Walton -- -- Even without Draymond Green playing, the Lakers would have been hard pressed to make it 6 in a row for the first time since 2011 against the Warriors tonight… The score was tied 8-8 before the Warriors went on a quick 8-0 run, forcing Luke to call a timeout after 5 minutes… Robinson in for Nance who had two early fouls... Nwaba and Black in for Ennis and Randle. Lakers struggling to get stops… Ingram out for Brewer, Lakers down 16… The Lakers trailed 43-28 after the first quarter… The Lakers started a Black, Metta, Brewer, Nwaba, Ennis lineup… Brewer quickly out for Nance… The Lakers cut it to 10, forcing a timeout… Ingram in for Metta, Lakers down 8… Randle in for Black who had 3 fouls, JC in for Ennis… Warrior starters taking it to the Lakers again, extending the lead back to 17 when Luke called the timeout… The Lakers trailed 64-50 at halftime… Luke called a timeout after we only scored 2 points in the first 3 minutes… Lakers down 17 when we brought in Brewer, Black and Robinson for Randle, Nance and Ennis… After a bad stretch for Ingram, Luke sat him for Metta. Lakers down 23… The Lakers had two turnovers going into that timeout by Luke, then committed a turnover out of the timeout… The Lakers trailed 93-70 heading into the fourth… He started a Robinson, Ingram, Nwaba, Brewer, Ennis lineup. A few seconds later he sat Ingram for Nance… Randle in for Robinson… The Lakers started to score off some pressure D, cutting it to 18… They cut it to 12… Metta, Clarkson, Robinson in… They’d get no closer…

Mrs. DB and Family -- -- Thank you, guys, once again for putting up with the countless Laker games that impact everyone’s schedule. The only good thing about a short season like this is I get back that family time that means so much to me. While I’d love to write another 20 games this season…that’s another 70-80 hours I get back to spend with the family. Love you.

LG -- -- Love you guys, too…no matter how crazy some of you cats are. We made progress this season. On the court our young guys started to establish a modern system and get experience. Off the court remains to be seen, but at least we have some clarity in ownership. Game coverage resumes in Summer League.

Thank You so much!

Thanks for a great season DB!

Such a great nickname lol
Thank you for the work night in and night out DB, great stuff. And thanks for the site!

Yeah, do a side by side comparison of the two. Baby Groot and Ingram with those tree branch arms of his.

Baby Groot grew up briefly into full grown Groot with that dunk and yell the previous night. He just needs to yell "I am Groot!!" after one of those.

Questions

How much should Lakers pay Randle and will he accept?

With Mosgov and Zubac on the Roster, how does Black fit in - especially with the team having his option

Swaggy having a player's option, why would he stay when he could get more money elsewhere? Can Swaggy be the starting SG for these Lakers?

Is Nance a starting PF for the Lakers, or is his value is coming off the bench

Is JC the starting SG (despite his lack of defense) or is he better being the new Lou Williams/Jamal Crawford coming off the bench

What teams would be a better location for Deng

Nwaba's role is the defensive stopper???????

Magic and Rob have a big job in front of them!

- Not sure what they do with Randle. Maybe try to see if you can get him on a JC-like deal. If not, play it out I suppose...but I think his price probably goes up after next year.

- Black: I liked his improvement this season, especially at the line. Shows he's a hard worker. If they plan to keep Randle, Black is probably gone. Magic seems to like Zubac and will probably want to make sure he gets minutes.

- Swaggy: Don't know what he does. I would think he opts out, but he loves L.A. If he opts out, I'd be surprised if we resigned him. We want the cap space.

- Last night's Nance was a starter. He has to bring that level of intensity all the time, which is seems to be just now starting to figure out. Otherwise, his flaws as a starter will catch up to him and he'll be a role player. Last night, though, you have to get that guy on the court as much as possible.

- JC is better off the bench, especially I think in some of those scoring challenged lineups that have good D. I think there's potential there to make that effective. But his D only improved slightly this season, IMHO.

- Deng. With that contract? I think we're stuck unless we're giving up young talent, which would probably be a waste unless we've got a for sure big name coming and need space. I do think Deng was one of our best defenders last season.

- Nwaba showed a lot of potential on that end of the floor for a rook...especially with how he can hold his own in multiple positions. Definitely has the chops for it. Looking forward to seeing him put in the work and playing in the Summer League.

Now that the season is over, which young players grew on you most?

Grew on me... Hmmm. When you say that, I instantly think to the new guys, but that's probably because they were new and were growing their games. I think the guys I've been most excited to watch this season are BI and Russell. If a game didn't have them, yikes. I'd put Zubac in there, as well, but a little lower.

What do you think of Nwaba and Ennis? Do you think they can stick around or progress to the next step?

I think they both showed potential as bench players. We have to focus on quality starters first, but if we're filling in the gaps on the roster, those guys had some excellent stretches for us.

We're expanding to 17 player rosters with the D-League contracts. With our revenues, we should be using all 17 of those in some fashion, gambling on young guys that we can develop. So a guy like Nwaba is the kind of project we should be working on.

I'm not quite sure what clicked with Ennis or when. Was it just a hot streak? Or was it the system/coach? We don't need him to be a full on ball-dominant PG, just make the right reads, hit shots and play tough D. This is kind of the guy he was in college who showed potential and his game is translating finally. He's given us much better two-way ball than our backup PGs earlier this season. I think he'd be wise to stick with this system even though we're restricted on what we can pay him. Again, we've got other priorities first this offseason, but as we fill out rosters it looks like a good fit. He's playing with a lot of poise and confidence. Next step for him is to work his way in as a rotational guard and I think he's been showing that with us.

Wondering if Brewer, Nwaba, Deng and Jr will on the court together is Luke wants a lineup that actually defend well. For the fifth player, they could have either
JC to have a shooter (if he is hot)
BI if a scorer/facilitator is desired
Zubac if they want a presence in the paint on both sides of the ball
DLO as a shooter
Imagine if PG was on the court with these players

Enjoy your off-season!

Kudos, to writers (DB), players, announcers ect......who still do a great job during bad times. I can't imagine how fun the recap is going to be when they turn this team back into a contendah.........in Magic we trust.

Thank you so much. I read these 100% of the time, even if I watched the game myself.

Grew on me... Hmmm. When you say that, I instantly think to the new guys, but that's probably because they were new and were growing their games. I think the guys I've been most excited to watch this season are BI and Russell. If a game didn't have them, yikes. I'd put Zubac in there, as well, but a little lower.

thanks for your thoughts DB, and again for your contributions all season long.
