Romo to be a “Maverick for a Day”

Maybe Tony Romo wouldn’t use the “R” word last week because he has one game left. In a different sport.

Via Marc Stein of ESPN.com, the former Cowboys quarterback will attend Tuesday’s regular-season home finale of the Dallas Mavericks — and he’ll wear a uniform and sit on the bench.

Romo won’t play, unfortunately. Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Romo will participate in all pregame workouts, layup lines, etc.

Mavericks owner Mark Cuban recently has been hinting at the addition of a “pass-first point guard.” Per Stein, Cuban was referring to Romo.

The Mavericks won’t make it to the playoffs for only the second time in Cuban’s 17 full seasons as the team’s owner.

I think they should let him play for a few minutes most don't know he used to play basketball in HS. He was rivals with Caron Butler.

They should for sure let him play, there will be a lot of people tuning in to watch the game to see Tony Romo play.

I'd rather see him in a Houston Texans uniform but oh well.

They really should. Even if he ends up like Alan Alda in Paper Lion, which i'm pretty sure he won't, it would be great TV.

Is Tony Romo 12? Is he dying of cancer? If the answer to both of those questions is "no," just have him come out in a damn suit before the game to shake Cuban's hand and take a bow.

Billy Crystal had a one day contract with the Yankees and even played a little so there's a precedent.

Well, I like Billy Crystal, but that's even worse.

Wouldn't it have been weird if Kobe suited up for the Rams for a game earlier this year?

I agree it would be weird especially since Kobe never played football before. At least Romo has played basketball in the past.

http://nba.nbcsports.com/2017/04/12/adam-silver-told-mark-cuban-nba-would-not-honor-tony-romo-contract-so-he-could-play/

Quote:

Adam Silver told Mark Cuban NBA would not honor Tony Romo contract so he could play

Adam Silver stood up to Mark Cuban — and it was the right move.

Tuesday night the Mavericks honored former Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo by having him be a “Maverick for a day.” He went through shootaround with the team, went through the layup line pregame, and sat on the bench in uniform for an NBA game. It was a marketing stunt, and while there was plenty of debate about whether it went too far on sports talk radio, it was ultimately harmless.

However, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban had wanted to sign Romo to a one-day contract and play him in that game, but Commissioner Adam Silver shot the idea down, Cuban told Todd Archer of ESPN.

If Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban had his way, Tony Romo would not only have dressed for Tuesday night’s game against the Denver Nuggets, he would have found his way into the game.

When he approached NBA commissioner Adam Silver with the idea, Cuban said, “I told him what I was going to do and said, ‘Fine me if you don’t like it.'”

Silver told Cuban the contract would not be honored, which killed the idea but did not stop the Mavericks from honoring the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback.

Good on Silver. That was the right call.

Having Romo in layup lines is one thing, having him play in the game is another. That would be denigrating the game. That would be an insult to all the guys busting it nightly in the D-Leauge just to get a chance to prove they deserve a shot in the NBA. Romo in a game would have been a step too far.

As it was, some fans thought this was a step too far, but Cuban told them to chill — the NBA is entertainment, and that’s all this was. He’s right. But only thanks to Silver.

This is so much bad boy posturing from Cuban and Silver doesn't give a (bleep) if he comes off as Dean Wormer. Total PR nonsense.

Btw, I still think it's silly, but sports are silly fun, so good for Dallas fans, the Mavs, and Romo. It sounds like it was a fun night.

What's laughable to me is if this is considered worse than starters taking games off at least you know the Mavs aren't going anywhere.

https://sportsday.dallasnews.com/dallas-cowboys/cowboys/2017/04/14/tv-tony-romo-lends-giant-assist-mavericks-ratings

Quote:
How much did TV Tony Romo assist Mavericks ratings? A lot

Turns out the on-vacation Mavericks really got a boost from TV Tony Romo. The CBS NFL analyst, who dressed up in a home team uniform for the season finale at American Airlines Center, helped earn the Mavericks a 1.8 rating on KTXA (Channel 21) for the loss to the Denver Nuggets.
Before you hold your nose at the 1.8 know this: It was the Mavericks' third-highest TV rating of the season. The very next night for the season-ending victory at Memphis, they scored half that rating, a 0.9 on Channel 21, which also happened to match the six-game season average on the station.

As you might expect, the Mavericks' runaway ratings winner this season came March 7 against the Los Angeles Lakers when Dirk Nowitzki reached the 30,000 career points plateau. The game scored a 2.6 for Fox Sports Southwest. Once upon a time not too long ago, that was just about an average rating for a Mavericks game.
Keep in mind that each rating point represents 27,134 homes in the Dallas-Fort Worth market.
No. 2 for this faded season was the Feb. 1 game against the Philadelphia 76ers, which earned a 1.9. That happened to be the team's third straight victory in the midst of a 6-1 run.
And now for more cloudy Mavericks TV news: They also averaged a 0.9 for 74 games on Fox Sports Southwest.
Last season, they averaged a 1.6.
That was down from 2.5 in 2014-15.
In 2010-2011, their NBA championship season, they averaged a 2.4 during the regular season.
Add the Tony Rome game: Most unusual about ratings for the game was that they peaked in the first half hour. Essentially most folks tuned in to check out the scene. The game opened with a 2.8 rating during the first 30 minutes and dropped to a 1.5 for the final 30 minutes.
