I may be close to being un-admittable.

No issues from me here. I've heard Pat Riley numerous times over the last 20 years make statements about wanting his teams to be more physically fit. Agree with Magic.

Ironically, magic, along with the other vets, had a lot to do with Riley leaving as coach of LA because they were sick of his overly aggressive practices...

But Riles was right about that stuff. It's not like pushing the guys to be in their best shape possible cost the team a ring or anything.

Except it did, and that's why they started tuning him out, after the Detroit loss.

Ok. The exception is transferrable to his fat son.
You can also just pay the Lakers fat tax instead if you want come. However 1k fine per % above 20% can be hefty.

They could never do it anyway. Then the "lucky fan" out of the stands might have a good chance of hitting a halfcourt or 3-point shot.

Great. Instead of Jack in the Box tacos when the team breaks 100, it's going to be a coupon for Real Food Daily

I still don't know if ya'll realize how much diet plays a part in this.

If you eat clean. Actually clean, and avoid drinking calories, it's not hard at all to be 10% or less.

No sweets, lean meat, lots of veggies/legumes/seeds/nuts. Macro the bread and complex carbs.

Limit the booze. It's not really that hard, you don't need stationary bike in the sauna.

Most people are fat because of their diets, not their lack of exercise.

A pastrami sandwich is about 600 calories at 57 grams of protein. Add in 16 oz of coke(187) and some fries 350 and you're at 1137 calories.
Running at an 8mph for an hour will burn about 782 calories.

That still gives you a calorie surplus of 355. You could run for an hour every day, at a solid pace, and still be fat if you ate like that.

You could get the same amount of protein, with a lot more fiber, vitamins, with hundreds less of calories if your meal is lean meat(fish, poultry) and vegetables.

If a professional athlete is at 13% bodyfat it's because they're eating bad food. Donuts, sweets, cheeseburgers whatever.

Having said all that. Magic could have just said great shape and optimal diets. Putting a relatively arbitrary number out to the media was unnecessary.

Literally nothing wrong with Magic wanting the team to be in excellent shape going into the season. This is their job.

7-8% is just not realistic. 10-11% I can see.

7-8% for EVERYONE in their growing bodies is not realistic.

Especially when they are working to get size for their NBA bodies as well as still growing into them.

Ingram's gonna need fats in order to gain size because that is how he's going to build muscle. Like I said, I think grassfed has them doing just fine, during the season, if Magic wants them to carry it to the off-season as well then great! But 7-8% bodyfat for every one is not just unrealistic, it isn't safe.

Had he said "We don't want anyone above 10% bodyfat" that would have been ideal.

Not sure what the big deal is.. He was just planting a seed into personnel that being out of shape is unacceptable. That's really all it is.

You could do that in much better ways than setting unsafe precedents.

if Magic says "I want guys all able to bench 300 by the beginning of next season" which could risk injury for pushing themselves too hard in the off-season.

Is it just "well he's just saying he wants guys to come back stronger, no harm in that."

Why not just say that? And if he wants guys dedicating themselves on bodyfat why not set it at 10% which is much more realistic and a goal to actually shoot for that is ALSO safe?

Again this whole "oh don't take him seriously. He's just saying 'this' and 'that'." is the kind of stuff I saw and heard from people about 6 months ago before the country got [expletive]d

lol@ That last comment.. I get your point though, he could have worded his directive better. With that being said I seriously doubt players are going to kill themselves trying to accommodate those percentages.

That may account for some of the posts.. I think you have a lot of intellectual posters in this forum. Intellectuals have a tendency to over analyze at times.

Depends on if they feel like their playing time / future here is on the line because of it.
