Dr. Michael Eric Dyson was on First Take yesterday and he had this to say about Kobe:
Quote:
"Jordan can never be duplicated. What he did for the culture. What he represented. What he did in terms of taking the game global. What he did in terms of making it as sexy as possible. That's undeniable. And joining the culture of commerce to the culture of black athletic style. The man is incredible. Because people forget: the hoop earring, the shaved hair, the baggy shorts... That's not the hood, that's Michael Jordan. So there's no doubt about it. But, to me: basketball on the court, complicated shots, shooting over taller opponents, footwork with extraordinary grace. The élan vital of the athletic balladry that he put on that court, I think there has been nobody better than Kobe Bryant. I think with the kind of will to win and playing through injury. Here's Michael Jordan: he's sick in one game, has a temperature. Scottie Pippen has to take him off the court. "Oh my god, look at him." This man played with a broken finger and won a championship. Had to rotate the ball off of the broken finger. I'm not denying the genius of Michael Jordan, I'm saying Kobe Bean Bryant, in my estimation, was the greatest basketball player. Studied the game, was a student of the game, worked harder than anybody else, including Jordan, to do what he did. That's why I think he's the greatest of all time."
Quote:
- "Jordan never had to defer to a great player like Shaq."
Quote:
- "Phil Jackson was not trying to regulate on Michael Jordan the way he did on Kobe. Now we see what Phil Jackson is made of."
Quote:
- "Kobe is the Greatest of All Time. The GOAT. Not a derivative. Jesus was derivative of God but he still managed to be divine."
Quote:
- "He [Jordan] was never tested to that degree [08 Celtics]. Kobe is better because he came back from defeat."
Well, actually I disagree to a certain extent, but only because I make a distinction between greatest and best. Greatest to me speaks about accomplishments, the career. Jordan is undeniably more accomplished than Kobe. Jordan's #1, Kobe's #2 in my book. Best to me speaks more about the height of a player's game. That is where I have Kobe #1. _________________ A banana is killed every time a terrible thread or post is made. Save the bananas. Stop creating terrible posts!
I don't think so, but he was one of the greatest for sure.
We can argue about who is the best SG ever because it is tough to compare players from different eras, but there is no question in my mind he was top 3 at his position.
He and Tim Duncan are the best players from his generation. We can debate for hours about who is the better, I prefer give the title for both, they were so good for so long, ultimate competitors with very distinct demeanors.
I hate Duncan for missing a last second shot under the basket at an all star game denying Kobe one more MVP.
Kobe was denied a couple of other possible 80 pts performances by Phil and fighting Jordan for another all star MVP when he was going head to head with MJ until the 3rd quarter when west coach took the kid out for good.

Good doctor knows what he's talking about. The bit about '08 Celtics, the original super-team, is right on point. That team was tougher than any of the 6 teams or over-the-hill Pistons/Celtics teams that MJ faced. Wheres that graphic of 50+ win teams Kobe beat vs MJ/LBJ? _________________ Alltime lineup: Magic | Kobe | MJ | Hakeem | KAJ
yes, I agree. _________________ "Now, if life is coffee, then the jobs, money & position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold & contain life, but the quality of life doesn't change. Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee in it."
Kobe is the GOAT if you appreciate beautiful basketball skills. He's also faced and defeated the most 50+ win teams in playoff history. The man had the strongest strength of schedule of any all time great and still manged to win 5 rings. Not mention 3 years of his peak were wasted with a GARBAGE roster consisting of Chucky Atkins, Smush Parker, Brian Cook, Kwame Brown, etc.

Dr. Dyson knows his basketball and Hip-Hop. He says Kobe is the greatest basketball player of all time and 2Pac are the the greatest emcee of all time. I approve this message.
I wouldn't say he's the best, but he's definitely #6 at the lowest and much higher than lebron will ever be, regardless to his numbers. Basketball is not only physical, it's mental and lebron is a mental midget.
I've done this maybe once to many times. Bottom line, everyone has a personal opionion, which is fine by me. I've got MJ, but to each his own. _________________ Lakers need to build a freaking team !
