When tasked with creating the prototypical modern NBA wing, you’d want the end result to look a lot like Brandon Ingram.

With a 6-foot-11 frame (the North Carolina native reportedly grew two inches this summer), a 7-foot-3 wingspan, the dexterity to bring the ball down and the touch to spread the floor from deep, it’s no surprise Ingram went No. 2 overall in the 2016 NBA draft.

As a rookie, his overall efficiency was lacking and multiple advanced metrics detested him (especially value over replacement player, which graded him as the sixth-least productive player in the NBA last year), and yet, we still can’t help but enthusiastically wonder what lies ahead for the Los Angeles Lakers small forward.

In 2016-17, Ingram became just the fifth player in league history to total at least 150 assists, 50 three-pointers and 36 blocks for a season before the age of 19. The other five were Kobe Bryant, Carmelo Anthony, LeBron James and Kevin Durant.

Finding men who can both adequately protect the painted area and function as dime-dishing floor-spacers on the offensive end is no easy feat. Yet the Lakers seem to have done just that.

And after a summer of refining the weaknesses in his game, Ingram is set to take the proverbial next step in 2017-18][/quote]

I don't know if this was posted or not.

I was thinking 14-15PPG is realistic, but now after his height hype and him being stronger 20-22PPG is now possible.

That's a weird stat, the 150 assists, 50 3s, and 36 blocks. And it said "before the age of 19" which is odd because Melo was 19 when he started in the league IIRC.

Also, i can't imagine there have been many 19 yr olds at all to play in enough games and minutes to total those numbers.

That said, I agree BI is a breakout candidate. Just don't get the odd cherry picked stat reference.

If Ingram really is 6-11 now, that will only help his scoring ability as it should be easier for him to hit shots with someone in his grill.

I'm sure all Lakers fans HOPE he has a breakout season...

To do that he must me more assertive, with that killer instinct (that Kobe & Michael played with), he needs to improve his shot selection, his shooting percentage, his defense, all of which should also increase his mpg...

That's a huge leap in one off-season...

I hope he does it, but I won't be holding my breath or be totally disappointed if he only becomes marginally better.

No pressure BI...

He was well on his way to having a big year until he got injured, then after he came back he kinda went down hill.

The Lakers were fully committed to developing BI last year (and, perhaps, tanking). So, even though BI was not producing, he was still on the floor. Most other teams would have sat him on the bench--hence this really strange cherry-picked statistic. That said, I really hope that he breaks out this year.

I clicked the link and saw the brief video showing him lifting and was surprised he wasn't stronger. Thought he was pretty weak actually, but he is really thin and really young and maybe they weren't showing his heaviest sets. If he is as weak as he looks in the video, he should be able to make good progress and be MUCH stronger pretty quickly.

Ingram appears to have a body type (extreme ectomorphism, having exceptionally long limbs and low body masses of fat and muscle. That profile is historically observed to be comparatively resistant to fast additions and large additions of muscle strength and muscle mass. Strength changes and muscle mass additions will take time. If he can avoid back, knee, hip and ankle injuries seen in players like him (Tyler Honeycutt, for example) that come from rushed lifting programs, a sustained if slow athletic improvement can be expected.

I can see him break out this year with his improved confidence, work ethic, and Lonzo finding him good looks. Actually not hard to imagine.

On the Lakers Nation podcast interview with Ball, he claimed BI has been the loudest talker on the court this summer.

And everyone thought he was a quiet kid. everything seems to be different with Ingram now, I'm willing to bet when Magic did not trade when the opportunity was there cause of his potential.. Ingram finally started to realize that he needs to take his whole game to another level.....

We'll find out soon enough. More leg strength and core conditioning, better ability stop jumping forward on his 3 pt shots, more lift, fixed release point, better arc, and next thing you know his shots are splashing not clanging the front of the rim.

My guess is BI will become a legitimate outside threat this season.

AND burn people even worse taking it to the rim because they can't cheat off him. With Lonzo Ball setting the table. And Brook friggin Lopez out there demanding attention from defenders too.

Yupe. BI's gonna thrown down haymaker dunks on a poor fool or three this season and get a couple arenas buzzing Gary Lance style.

Not that my expectations are high or anything, heh heh pssht, but that's about all I expect from Bi his second season.

I'm not even going to worry about 20-22 PPG. If BI can go and produce...

around 16 PPG,
with 45% FG and 38% 3pt,
plus around 5-6 boards a game,
in at least 75 games this year...

then I'll be very happy.

Of course, if he can do that and Julius can pull down 17 and 10 with a 35% 3pt, we just might have the best young forward tandem in the league outside of GS for the next few years.

If he improves his shooting, especially free throws, it will be an improvement.

Would love to see a Laker have a breakout season. Ingram, sure he could do it, why not ? Not so sure he's the most likely one to produce big in an absolute sense, but he may be the one to make the biggest step forward.
